2D OR 3D?

Don't be so harsh on 3D games. I like them. For me, it makes me feel like I'm kinda in the game.

For example, when I play Mario Kart, I tend to move side to side when I make turns, or in RPGs where I get really nervous and my heart starts pumping when my characters are low on HP. Strangely, I don't do any of that with 2D games. Not even that RPG example.

Sure, a lot of 3D games look awful and have horrible gameplay, but we should let the developers practice. One day, we might have a console that actually lets us go into the game, and who is gonna want 2D then?
I find the general "playstation/n64 graphics looked like shit! Theres nothing nostalgic about early 3D graphics!" surprising from this topic. I mean idk, I guess every atari and NES game had good graphics or something? inb4 "everything was better when you were 12" point.

I'll end this topic by saying BOTH 2D and 3D games are good and both have pros and cons.

I don't mind older 3D games (i.e. PSX/2 eras), but I'm not at all interested in ultra-realistic "wow check out the detail on this blade of grass" games. When it comes to Final Fantasy XIII, for example, all I hear about (outside the internet, where people do not discuss RPG battle algorithms at length) is the graphics (...and chocobrofro); I am guessing they detract from the gameplay/storyline/music/whatever and considering the origins of FF that's pretty...I don't know, sad?

This is coming from a guy who doesn't own a next-gen so I may be slightly ignorant but I guess a good reason I don't have one is how high-budget highly-advertised games featuring HD graphics or whatever's the rage these days seem very soulless and kind of turn me off buying, say, a PS3. Yeah I'll just stick to my DS and Playstation emulator thanks; I'm not the type of person who wants their game to resemble real-life in every possible aspect so much so that they're practically living in it. Kind of freaky to be perfectly honest.

....I feel jaded sometimes (pretty remarkable considering I'm only 17)

That is an annoying way to end what adults like to call a "discussion."

Agreed. Can we at least discuss the pros and cons?

people have mentioned that gameplay should come before graphics. 2D or 3D it doesn't matter. I personally cannot imagine a game like Spyro in 2D. It would just blow, in comparison. Nor could I see a game like bomberman in 3D. It would be a pain in the ass.
Depends what kind of game you're going after that should determine the graphics.

I agree with Dudesoft, think of several games out there, no matter what the genre, could you really imagine games like Halo or Modern Warfare being in 2D and still holding the same charm gamers find in them today? Or conversely can you really see a great 2D game like Odin's Sphere (I think that's what it's called, forgive me I don't have my videogame magazines in front of me) in 3D?

I personally find 2D to be have an advantage over 3D with regard to gameplay. A much more simplistic system in 2D games can still be great and long lasting (just look at the original Mario games). However 3D reigns supreme with regard to level design and in turn, because of having more detailed environments, normally offers better backstory ("normally" being the keyword, don't flame me if you think of another 2D game that does a better job).

The producer actually came out and said 'heh i know we removed all the things you would expect from an rpg like town shops exploration npcs etc but well hd graphics are very hard to make so we decided to ditch all that shit in order to attain an extreme number of 3d polygon!!'

Yes, it detracts pretty hard my friend... and it is only getting worse!
I think it depends on the game, For example

Sonic and Knuckles

VS
Sonic Heros

Well you be the judge.

Although its not all about the Graphics, i would prefer a game that has amazing game play and graphics that look like they where made in paint by a 4 year old with Tourettes then a game with shity game play and the worlds most amazing and polished graphics, but thats just me.
