XP GAMES WILL ABSOLUTELY NOT WORK.

So I have Windows Vista, and playing any and all XP games just isn't happening. The title screen loads up, I select 'New Game', and I get 'RGSS Player Has Stopped Working', and that's if I'm lucky, usually it just locks up like an asshole.
So ugh, what do I do?

I am this close to going to the store right now, getting an external hard drive, backing up my shit, and going back to Windows XP. This is but one instance of a LONG line of bullshit I've had to put up with Windows Vista, not even just considering the expected issues with older software. Vista has been nothing but a pain in the ass since I got it and has literally no advantages over XP in my experience.
EDIT: fuck it going to the store right now. hopefully when i get back someone will have some solutions?

Try compatibility mode.
If that doesn't work then if you have a decent amount of ram (you'd have to devote 512mb or so to the guest OS) and you still have your XP install disc, download Virtualbox and run XP as a guest operating system. The actual OS will work better than compatibility mode!

Somehow, installing Last Scenario also made Exit Fate work; so far.
EDIT: WELP, SILLY FUCKING ME, ONLY WORKED UNTIL THE FIRST CUTSCENE

Well my ultimate solution for any vista problems is to install XP lol. I don't know if you went out and bought it yet but if I was as fed up with vista as you seem to be then XP would be what I do.
I don't know about rmxp specifically, but I can personally vouch for many programs that had compatibility problems in vista working perfectly in windows 7, often without setting compatibility modes. If you're backing up your stuff anyway, why not test out windows 7 first? It seriously runs better on my laptop than windows XP did (and it was a system that was preloaded with vista before vista launched).

And uh, tell it no when it wants to extract
(I have no idea if this will help but it is less retarded than the default RMXP RGSS which monkeys throwing shit at silicon could improve)
I've never ever ever had an issue playing an XP game, and have been running Vista since the first service pack came out. Your problem is not the operating system.
Also, confirm, did you try running the game in compatibility mode?
Right click -> Properties -> Compatibility -> check Run in Compatibility Mode, check Run Program as an Administrator.

Guys I figured it out; but I really have NO clue how! I guess I'll just take my luck and run with it before anything bad happens.
PS: Exit Fate is pretty much the best RM game in existence. It's polish seriously rivals some professional games out there. Give it a play!

The only things Exit Fate needs are a musician and a "face editor" dude who will make the chicks not-scary.
...also maybe more fantasybucks dropped after battle so as to afford OH GOD MY WEAPONS (but tbh the game is pretty true to Suikoden II, so... yeah... .... ...)
