Also keep in mind the player has absolutely no clue, hint, or lead anywhere within the game that any of those chests contain the Zodiac Spear.
Also keep in mind that you don't need this weapon to complete the game and it doesn't effect, at all, the overall gameplay. Unless you have some sort of "ultimate equipment OCD", this really shouldn't bother you.

And it's still a dumb, cheap ploy to get you to buy a strategy guide. It's not a HUGE detractor of the game, but it's still a shining example of poor game design.
I don't think my game is fun, but I think it's okay to play because of the features, and the gameplay intended.

That's not the point. It doesn't matter whether it's optional or not; it's poor design. Nobody likes being screwed out of fun stuff. And when game makers put things into games that could never be found by the player on their own (or are only found by the most ridiculous odds), that's exactly what they're doing.

I am saying that you shouldn't need a strategy guide unless you are a person who has a compulsive need to collect everything in the game - that unless you are this kind of person then such a cheap ploy should not work on you.

That's not necessarily true. Strategy guides still appeal to a lot of gamers who get stuck, battle tactics, want to know things like bestiary information, item/weapon lists, game maps, where to go next, etc etc. While you don't NEED a strategy guide to complete the game, not everyone are as aqainted with RPGs, or even video games in general like us and need, or want a helping hand. And like I said, stuff like the bestairy and item lists are pretty useful in general, since it's all laid out for you.

Generally, though, I just don't see why it matters. Because I don't see why it matters I am unable to see how it is flawed game design. Until you brought it up in this topic I wasn't even aware that such a weapon existed and I don't think any worse of the game design in Final Fantasy XII as a result of knowing.

I just think it's dumb. I mean, I guess it's one thing having it be a one 1/256 drop like some older RPGs, but making it a 1/10000 chance (its actually even lower than that, but I digress) and giving the player no hints or ANYTHING towards how to get it. I suppose it's not a strike AGAINST it, but I mean...it's dumb. Why even bother with such a thing?

My RPG is fun because it tries different things, like temporarily allowing the party to walk through walls and avoid enemies, or allow them to leapfrog across a pond. I'm not saying it goes where no RPGs have gone, just that I haven't seen many RPGs give their characters such powers, even for a little while.

My game's fun because it's nostalgia-inducing (sometimes it's so heavy in parts in can cause nosebleeds) and I try to include mini-games and fun little side-quests as well as the main plot-line.
And there's a buttload of side-quests because I love them. (That is why I stopped playing FFXIII.)

Max: Yes. I would have liked it slightly less back-of-the-game-boxish, but it is what I was expecting.

I was originally going to reply to all of the plugs with questions and whatnot, but then the topic exploded, and I was happy with where Neo was taking it.
