Imagine what would happen if pi was rounded down to 3...

Just like in the bible...

Anywho, what I am gathering from this is people want more ways to be able to judge a game before downloading and investing time playing.

First and foremost, can I request that we include the ability to filter games by the existence of a download?

EDIT:
EDIT: Unwork the Misaos and put them back as they were. A yearly set of awards that are given at around the same time each year create a buzz around the community (cf. Oscars); a constantly shifting set of values does not create the same buzz (cf. IMDB ratings).
I miss the buzz and excitement too.

I have just asked this: whats preventing us from creating buzz near the end of the year? Technically nothing has changed except you can vote whenever you want.
Now granted, I wasn't here when the Misaos were once a year, but I quite like the idea of a 'buzz'.

EDIT: I think all we really need is to generate a little buzz about the Misaos and maybe focus them down a little bit (there looked like up to 30 or more nominees for some categories.... way too much in my opinion).

One of the problems I'm seeing is too many categories and too many nominees... Run with me for a second.

Five nominations per category.

Things like atmosphere and level design would easily fall under story and gameplay respectively for example so they don't necessarily need their own category and it would add a lot more 'sleekness' to the award to trim it down and shape it up.

Something about a pot being 10 cubits across and 30 around. I wouldn't put much stock in it, though - it's not like the Bible is a beacon of scientific integrity. I just thought it was an amusing thing to say after F-G's comment.

One problem I have with voting for whatever you want is you'll end up with twenty people voting for twenty different games. In the end you'll find some game won a category because it got four or five votes, which hardly represents any kind of consensus. It should be used to vote for the best game at the time in their eyes, but what it seems to be used for mostly is voting for their friend's game. Then again any system will have some problem or another.

I feel like the current system is a good idea that is currently not being used properly.
You know, what if we had nominations ALL year round and then voting during one month. This way, it's fun because it's the entire year around but we also get that wonderful "once a year" buzz. :D

The site already averages out review scores
Averaging a score, rounding it down and showing this value is NOT the same as showing the average. The numerical average should be shown on a game-page and star-ratings should be saved for individual reviews.

I'm not going to deny that this is a selfish observation I have made because it is based on my own game(s). For instance, Sore Losers has an average rating of ~3.4 and yet is shown to have an average of 3. This is despite the fact that 4/6 reviews are above 3 and only 1 is below 3. It constantly irks me.

Imagine what would happen if pi was rounded down to 3...

Actually Sore Losers has an average rating of 3 because our ratings here are clamped to .5 rating increments. Sorry! It's a little hard to show a star rating of 3.48571094784 sometimes and I like the star ratings.

As for the Misaos, your request is denied. The way they work might not tickle your buzz-craving fancy, but that doesn't really bother me. The current system DEFINITELY needs adjusting and I have admitted that. However, the way they used to work is gone forever.

Your categories are too broad. Gameplay design and level design are vastly different. Atmosphere I could see a case for.

There are about 15 categories for the Misaos at the moment and a game must fulfill certain requirements to be eligible for them.

Fair enough.

I would still highly suggest trimming down the number of games eligible for a Misao though. 30 games in one category spreads the votes way too thin, plus it's highly unlikely that people went through all 30 eligible games before making a vote. It might work nice if we tally up nominations first (instead of straight up votes) and then take the top 5 or so (or however many you want) and do a run-off.

This
1. Gives the 'nominated for a misao' title a great honor regardless of winning or not.
2. Allows people to actually take a look at all of the games on the list before voting
3. Condense the vote so it's not spread so thin (and thus, makes it more accurate).

:D
shouldn't that be rounded to 3.5 anyway? considering the increments are 0.5...

They aren't rounded, they are floored.
maybe this rounding shenanigans can be discussed in a more appropriate thread? :D

The Misaos in their current form are worthless.
The misaos' purpose are really just a big popularity contest in order to know what games people actually give a shit about. It's not worthless.

Yeah, but their not all that significant either.
mitsu
they are worthless
no they aren't
yes they are

ok
Five years and we haven't got misaos right.

Makes you think...what if...
