PRETENTIOUS BULLSHIT AND MISSING THE POINT: THE SEQUEL TO THE GAME TO THE MOVIE

Can anyone explain to me how you can come to the idea that this isn't a game about rape but a rapist?? I've been reading the edmund topic and it seems really fuacking dumb. they just get mad when some ranter "misses teh point!!1"
i might've had one too many beers but that sounds like some bullshit to me.
"I'm not a drug addict, I'm just bound by habit to shoot up heroin everyday!"
In my opinion, the game maker was really lazy and just shat together some cliché things critique guys (the dumb ones) swoon for: Allegory, Darkness, 8-Bit, it's all there. Especially the first one: It annoys me to hell that some garbage works (I don't wanna start an argument, so I won't name any) are supposed to be really good literature because of their "deeper meaning". Every 8-year old is capable of making a story with a deeper meaning to something, it's really nothing special.

I was waiting for that moment... when rape in games would be called cliché.
Everybody(if they are sane) hits a point where they grow up and can't understand how the younger generation can like or possibly participate in certain things.

I want to know why everybody cares so freaking much about this. LIke, so what if someone made a game about something stupid/innapropriate, you don't HAVE to pay attention to it if you don't like the game, no one is forcing you to play it or look at it, and I don't think you paid for it so... Yeah. You can just forget about it and let it be.
I think it's a combination of wanting to shape how indie games are viewed in general ("how about we don't show off games about rape"), and people being interested in their hobby. See, when you play indie games, you care about indie games, and thus don't ignore parts of it.
Also saying "just ignore it" adds nothing to the discussion except making you an elitist tool. ={
@FG: hmm nope it's pretty serious, from the author. There's a 21 page edmund topic of him going "YOU DIDNT GET ITTTT"
@lennon: idk, ITS SOMETHING TO TALK ABOUT ??? 90% of the forum posts would be gone if everyone listened to you. The main point of the topic is this game stands to shock people for the sake of art, when really it's just a bad game with less depth than a plate.
And the game explores nothing about rape, because its not about rape, the main character is a rapist, thats the tie, the meat of it is (hopefully) within michael/edmund's struggle to do the acts or not, not the act itself, or exploring it.

I don't care that Edmund is about rape or a rapist. If there's something meaningful to draw from the game, then that would be fine.
Crime and Punishment was about a guy who kills an old lady. If all that book told us was "this guy killed a lady", then the book would be stupid. Instead, it goes into great lengths (emphasis on lengths) about his self-loathing and how he tortures himself with guilt over the crime he committed. In the end he comes to terms with his actions and the world moves on. It's a slice of humanity, a true depiction of humility and excruciating guilt.
Does Edmund have any of these things? I don't think Karsu's original point was whether or not controversial subjects are moral or uncomfortable or what-the-fuck-ever, I think he was more asking why this sort of bullshit is tolerated if it has absolutely no value to it. From what I understand, the gameplay blows, the story is more of a synopsis, the graphics are "edgy" but equally shitty, and the game really doesn't go anywhere. So if it's a boring game with bad graphics and a bad -- albeit controversial -- story, then why is it being hailed as genius and winning this competition?
I've never played this particular game, but there have been plenty I've played before that just try to shock and demoralize. It may get lots of attention, but do people really enjoy and think these games are good?

I'll admit there is something fundamentally irritating when games like this get so much attention compared to other games that deserve it more... you know, games that are FUN to play.

You might want to try letting go of your preconceptions and giving the actual game a try. That's a lot of prejudging for someone who hasn't played it. I thought that the gameplay was fine, the graphics were pretty interesting, and the story was quite well executed.
I guess, karsuman, catmitts et al. that I didn't particularly feel that Edmund was a bad game or that it failed as art. I will only agree with you insofar as you say that it was in poor taste, and to me good taste is not a prerequisite for art.

Just to play devil's advocate: art isn't fun.
Unless you're one of those people who believes that games aren't art.

I care about how indie games are viewed and I would almost say "how about we do show off games about rape" as long as they at least attempt to address the topic seriously. Games like SCMRPG! are much lauded for challenging the idea of what games can be about. That is a direction I want to see games in general move in. Even if SCMRPG isn't a very good game and the author's statement does seem somewhat disingenuous.
Hahaha, well allow me to devil your advocate: Art can be fun. It can be exciting, thought-provoking, or at the very least say something culturally significant. Good art also requires skill and time-investment: Even though it'd be possible for anyone with a little bit of art experience to copy something like Picasso's Guernica, it takes a true art badass to create it from scratch.
Or not :P
That being said, I would say a game like this is significant because the response it provokes proves that people are easily driven by scandalous things...

I would say games like SCMRPG and Edmund are significant because of the response they provoke, full stop. And in the case of the former, Danny Leodone has said the same thing.

I reserve judgment on this until I play Super Cock Blockers
Is this a real game? Because if it's not, I'm making it.

1) Meaningful discourse/observations about (very) rarely explored subject matter.
2) A shock jock-style attempt to garner attention by offering some vague preconception of depth and symbolism.
Tbh, I'm surprised. That's very naive. Maybe it's just the crudeness that comes with being a teenager but when you started listing things I was expecting to read something more like "Rape as many victims as possible within the time limit"
post=152921post=152919I hope the person who made that game will rot in hell for all eternity like the asshole that he is.
Speaking of tact, lets not forget the most (in)famous RPG Maker game of all time:
Basically just an exercise in how far you can push the barriers of taste.
