CONTROVERSY: WHICH FF GAME RUINED THE SERIES?
Posts
I dunno, they're all pretty decent at least. FFVI being the absolute best, and FFXIII being the worst, I'd say.
Well, that's your opinion. Never really played FFVI for more than a few minutes (I should, but the PS1 version sucks hardcore!), and I did enjoy FFXIII. It's not the best, but it isn't terrible. And I'm the targeted demographic.
Well, that's your opinion. But oddly enough, that's the opinion I formed of you right this second. Not the topic premise part, mind you, but the imbecile part.

Easy! Final Fantasy: Spirits Within.
This lead to Square's financial ruination and as a result we have been BOMBARDED with spinoffs, remakes, ports and over-focus on cinematics!
This makes sense to me.

I'd say FF8 but but I think FF10 2 might have been the nail in the coffin.
I liked X-2, it was nice to play something a little more lighthearted and less epic than the usual FF fare (well, in the first part of the game at least). Solid gameplay too.
Shame about The Spirits Within too, I thought it was a good movie.
The games have never been science fiction. They use MAGIC and ride DRAGONS; it's barely steampunk, if anything.
STOP DOING DIFFERENT THINGS YOU'RE RUINING IT

I tend to judge them as games that are different but follow similar formulas and given that I have played nothing prior to FF7, I don't have any experience with the MIND BLOWING AWESOMENESS of FF6. I've liked aspects of all games released that I've played (direct in the series and a couple of spinoffs) and there are things I've disliked. I wouldn't say anything really 'ruined' FF; it's just how different people see it. I mean, a new comer to FF13 might love it to pieces or hate it to death, but they wouldn't have any idea what the others were like, because they're all different.
Ruined is a pretty strong term dude.

Considering each title has nothing to do with the last, I think this topic is rather stupid. Some are better than others, but to blame any one title for destroying the ones that followed makes no sense to me. There are also different teams working on separate entries, so maybe commenting on those teams would be more worthwhile.
Your post would make sense...if I asked if Chrono Cross ruined Suikoden and the Final Fantasies weren't numbered chronologically.
If what you say is true, then why are all the games titled Final Fantasy?
I can't even tell you "nice try" here. You blew it from the jump.

Most of the Final Fantasy games try something different to those that have come before (esters becomes materia becomes junctioning, ATB becomes CTB becomes ADB etc.), they have different storylines to those that came before and they are set in different universes to those that came before. This makes them just as different to each other as they are to games from other series.
PS: They're all called "Final Fantasy" because the name sells.
There must be a miscommunication here. Notice I put the word "Controversy" in the topic. I thought that was clue enough that this is not a serious debate.
There is no right or wrong answer and I am well aware of that. The fun of being at a forum populated with fanboys are reading the wildly different opinions people have about the same exact things.
I just wanted to see people's opinions. It's not as serious as you're making it...similar to my "worst videogame character" thread. I interpreted the post that I responded to as someone trying to make this topic something that it's not. I assumed people would get that but alas...we're in the generation that are used to subtleties being shot at them through cannons.
