CONTROVERSY: WHICH FF GAME RUINED THE SERIES?
Posts
I remember something that annoyed me about FF9, although it's not really its fault.
The first time I played it, it seemed like magic because I always had the right amount of cash and equipment to buy and synthesize what I needed. I think the reason for that was because I made Zidane win the tournament instead of trying to get something rarer.
When I played it the second time, I didn't do that, and always felt behind. Synthesizing can be good and bad... FFTA2.
Anyway though, FF9 is one of my absolute fav's simply because of the characterization, and the sheer amount of art and work that went into the world itself.
In general, I've discovered, I'm really more a fan of becoming immersed in a world than being immersed in a story about that world. Probably why I like Legend of Mana and FFXII so much.

First, as a caveat, the hardcore RPG gamers 'round these parts have brought it to my attention that I, not to put too fine a point on it, SUCK at Final Fantasy games.
To answer the question that was put by the topic, ...almost 8, 9 was a brief grace period, then 10 undeniably ruined it forever. I never played 11, and I tried to get into 12, I really did, until I realized that A. It was now like a single-player MMORPG and B. In order to not be completely inefficient, I had to set up the gambits (or what the fuck ever), programming AI routines and macros that just seemed horribly tedious and boring.
Honestly, I just hate the shit out of the entire idea of gambits. They just felt like WORK to me. I like playing RPGs, and I like programming them, but I like these things for two different reasons and I do not like when they are combined. If I want to set up AI routines I will open up fucking RPG Maker, thank you very much.
I haven't played every Final Fantasy but 6, 7, and 9 are the only ones whose mechanics I have really enjoyed.
