SO WHAT HAPPENED
Posts
Alright. IRC was bubbling with rumours and questions and no one knew anything and the site was down for two days.
So what happened. Or more importantly: Is this likely to happen again?
And what can be done to get information out to users about what might (or might not) have happened in case something like this were to happen again. RMN has a twitter account so that could probably be used for quick messages like "HOOOOLY SHIT. It's down". But the IRC topic was also about a day late in updating and when it did it was with <GreatRedSpirit> (somebody should update the topic to something like "rmn server shat a brick, future unknown")" which on the whole wasn't overly helpful.

I like how everyone acted as if RMN was going to be down forever, it came to the point where people were discussing other RM forums to visit etc. Hell mary4D even made a RIP rmn image. I know some of you were probably joking but uh... wtf?
10/08/25 08:36:06 <WIP> RMN was hosted by a corporate entity to make up for Enterbrain
botching the deal to purchase us.
10/08/25 08:36:50 <Nines> same here...first line I saw was "class action lawsuit" :P
10/08/25 08:36:50 <WIP> They never said how LONG they would be hosting the site and I always wondered when
the plug would get pulled. The server is unresponsive at the moment so that time might be now
10/08/25 08:37:27 <Ark> But they would have to give some sort of warning.
10/08/25 08:37:32 <LouisCyphre> And they're not obligated to provide the DB or anything of the sort
10/08/25 08:37:33 <WIP> No they wouldn't
10/08/25 08:37:57 <Shinan> There's no backup anywhere?
10/08/25 08:38:15 <WIP> I have an outdated DB backup
10/08/25 08:38:19 <WIP> but that is only half the site data
10/08/25 08:38:22 <WIP> There are still images and downloads
10/08/25 08:38:39 <WIP> If the server died, I'm not bringing the site back
uh uh
as they say here in Kenya "Hakuna Matata"! Right? Right?!?!?!?!

I wasn't aware of any of this. Can anyone elaborate on this entire situation please?
WIP said he was going to write up an article on the Enterbrain fiasco a month ago. The gist of is was that RMN was going to be Enterbrain's official english portal, coinciding with their english launch of Action Game Maker, but then Enterbrain pulled a douche move and posted it on CNET. The company that was arranging it all (I forget their name) had purchased a server for us to host the site before the deal went through. After it fell through, that company let us continue to use this server. The only risk was we have no idea for how long they will let us mooch.

I just assumed WIP was applying the update and went on with my life like a normal person.
This statement would apply more to the situation if that was actually the case and there wasn't the possibility (or at least that's what people thought) of the site going down forever, which is something to be legitimately concerned about.
Get down from your ivory tower buddy, nobody was postulating they were going to hang themselves over it.

1. Is there a way to find out how long that agreement will last?
2. In the case that time is running out, is there another option or a Plan B as far as servers go?
The server looks as though it was shut down. Reasons as to why could be many. Datacenter upgrades, downtimes, problems, etc.
We are getting in contact with the corporate entity to see if we can find out what is going on and conditions.
There is also no plan B. The site is pretty heavy for the amount of fundage it brings in per month.

Wait, what the fuck is happening now?
Because THIS:
and THIS:
do not compute.
EDIT: Damnit WIP beat me too it.

So from what I understand this entire site and the gigabytes and gigabytes of data and intellectual property on it, are hanging by the thread of the mercy of a corporate entity? From over here that is a scary thought. Understandable, but pretty scary!
I think a site announcement of what exactly what is going on is in order!
wait people use the IRC? last time i went there, there was only one person and they wouldn't talk to me, what do i smell?
it was a prank we pulled on you. we were secretly all laughing at you the whole time you were there. we were like "lol he is so ALONE right now amirite?"

That''s what I thought too. I had no idea that all of this other stuff was going on, though.
In any case, I hope the issues get straightened out!
wow! I just thought it was the update.
