we live in a world where ff6 quality does not exist. i apologize. like, you can tell the people behind ff6 were proud of what they created because of the sheer amount of cool details they added throughout the game.
the only reason disc 1 of ff7 was cool was just leftover steam from making ff6

I want a super complicated and unique leveling system that was breakable to the full--Oh right, FFVIII...I want a female character who wasn't annoying...wait, I actually like them. I want an iPOD Touch included with every purchase!

Or at least varied gameplay. Final Fantasy XIII was little more than a combat engine that happened to have a story.
Variety is right. Minigames, an exporeable world, rather than an exploreable pathway. Give me something fun to do as well, customizeable characters is nice too, rather than the illusion of customising.
FFV,VI,VII got this... VIII to a very lesser extent.
I'd be fine if they spent less money on the graphics too. I'm really sick of this cinematic Final Fantasy genre that's been happening. If the world is exploreable and interesting, instead of linear with a choice-based airship... yeah, I'll be happy. It'll never happen though.

I'd rather a new Chrono game, or Final Fantasy VI remake with like 12s free roaming battlesystem but with 13s turn based style.. Like when you choose an action, you play out that action instead of just watching it. And a revamped IX skill learning system for it.

Characters that I can like. A story that is engaging but not overly complicated. Maybe a return to a simpler graphic style so that the focus can be put on story/characters/fun gameplay.

Sounds like what the original plans were for FFXII(Basch as the main character)...but then Square thought that gamers were p**sies and felt that we would only identify with someone that personified the term.
