RPG MAKER GAME TEAR-JERKERS.

Posts

Have cried after a powerful moment in an rpg maker game? No. I don't think I've ever cried while playing a commercial game. I got really sad when I was going to finish FF3 and FF7. That's about it.

I don't want to mention any spoilers, but in a certain scene or two from Notes of the Second Mellynd War while it was RM2k3, I felt a tear swell up in one of my eyes. Also, near & in the end of Dhu'x Scar, I got an actually tear strolling down my cheek. Although I never wanted to cry a river for an RM games, the closest I got were those two games.
Vacant Sky a thousand times

Obviously saying anything is a huge spoiler but suffice it to say that episode 2 had me bawling like a baby. Movies and games don't really make me emotional but holy fuck does this game make crushing your heart into an art form
The cancellation of Kinetic Cipher got me all teary eyed.

How could you not be moved by that reality crashing down around you after the demo ends?!
That game-crashing save-bug in HR brought me tears....tears of rage.
I bet dozens of people cried over Line's End.
It takes an amazing story in commercial video games to move me, I'm much more often moved by movies and Anime. Emotion in RM games is generally nonexistent at all, but I actually do laugh over the RPG Maker comedies. When someone tries to be serious in an RM game, it actually might make me laugh anyway because of how satirically bad it is.

This I can agree with. Its like those games that some overconfident, soulless, maniacally-laughing douche comes in and destroys an entire village and makes the main character watch as he decapitates his little sister. Of course the hero goes "NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!", typically following a "Don't hurt her! For the love of GOD, don't hurt her, you lunatic!" "Grr, I hurt her because I'm teh EVIL!", but just how it goes about is so hilariously terrible that any attempt at inspiring a greater feeling of "I want to kick this guy so hard in the testes that it sends them rocketing through his spine, severing it." falls flat and kills the mood for the inevitable boss battle ahead.

It sounds like you just haven't been playing good RM games.

I've played near all RM games that I could get my hands on, minus VX and XP to now, so you'll have to trust me when I say that there's never been a time when "Don't kill him." "I'm gonna kill him for my master!" "SAVE ME, BROTHER!" *unintentionally hilarious death* (even now, I'm laughing) "NOOOOUUURRGHHH!!" was justified. You find me a game that pulls of a death scene correctly and I'll play it.

It's not on this site, and its not RPG Maker, but the best death scene I've ever seen was in an amateur RPG called Sword of Jade.

Were my death scenes unintentionally hilarious? I tried not to make them TOO serious.

Death scenes are supposed to be serious (except maybe in dark comedies) but that doesn't mean there has to be overly dramatic sad music and anguished cries of "NOOOOOOOOOO," or ten minute pre-mortem monologues.

I don't believe any of this.

And I'm scared to make the same question for the third time.
Haven't cried from a video game that I can remember. Haven't played enough RM games, but I can imagine why that would be difficult to achieve. I don't anticipate it will happen, but it's not out of the realm of possibility...in particular, when a sad scene is paired with just the right music, that could do it for me. The right music alone can make me go, so the scene would just need to not be overbearing.

But if you want if you want a demonstration of what's possible...

I'm almost embarrassed to say it, but Sailor Moon made me cry. Not just Sailor Moon, but the hilariously terri-bad English dub. Not only that, but that girl (Molly?) with the single most hilariously terri-bad New York accent did it, with an ANGUISHED CRY of NOOOOOOOO!!!

This is the scene, seconds before it happens (EDIT: Embedding ignores timestamp, skip to about 1 minute in):

That scream haunted me for YEARS. I musta seen that, what, almost 15 years ago now. It burned so deep in my memory that I brought it up even now just from this discussion. Watch the whole scene for context if you want, but I don't remember particularly caring about what was going on until I heard that scream.

If they can make that work, I don't doubt the power of what someone can do in RPG Maker. I certainly wouldn't ever stop anyone from trying.
