Random chance in video games is poor design, as is elemental weakness. It's a foregone conclusion; is the enemy weak to fire? USE FIRE! That's what you do. It's not compelling gameplay or intelligent decision making. I wonder if developers keep including it because it makes people feel smart for having deduced to right element to use (scan) and then seeing LARGE NUMBERS come up when they use ice on the Burning Magmalords.
By that logic, every RPG ever made has poor design.

I'm going to make a Fire Elemental that is weak against fire damage and absorbs ice. Now we will see the player's minds explode.
ON TOPIC: Reminds me a lot of FF1 for some reason. When it comes out here in about six years I might buy it.

Hmm... Well I liked FF1, but never got to end of FF3. I only played the NES version of it but still, I only got about halfway through because it seemed like a rehash of FF1.
Still, this looks heaps better than the pile of crap that 13 was, so if you think it's good then that's enough to warrant me trying it.

I didn't like it so much. The story was admittedly decent and the combat was fun sometimes, but I expected more in the area of exploration. Just felt as if something was lacking.
This game (4HOL) is actually way more fun than FF1 or FF3. I finally got my copy yesterday (Amazon was kind enough to send me an email saying "We shipped your order!" about two hours before it arrived at my door).
Feels a bit grindy but I don't mind that. I also don't really seem to mind the auto-targeting as much as I had expected. Probably because usually with RPGs I am just mashing attack anyway during random battles. This game just saves me the extra step!
Oh, and this game also looks glorious. The style definitely fits the DS hardware very well.

You obviously forgot to talk to the numerous folk in town that told you where to get water spells.
CLASSIC PRO-TIP: TALK TO EVERYONE
CLASSIC PRO-TIP: TALK TO EVERYONE
all they said was "the king banned water spells" and "you need water spells to fight the sand devil"
that doesn't tell me shit
that doesn't tell me shit
I believe the term they used was "confiscated".
Go back into town at night.
Go back into town at night.
ahahaha at nighttime the scholars just don't give a shit and let you plumb their cavernous treasury
fuck you square-enix
fuck you square-enix
cho: I didn't have the water tome; I learned about it after-the-fact. I just died, then ran back and bought more than a single water attack item.
Jusqua as a Bard in a Poet's Tunic (or whatever it's called) and a Burning Harb facing off flying fish on a ship he's sailing solo is badass.
EDIT: KARSUMAAAAAANNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN

Man, bosses in this game are so good. They're not really puzzles in terms of being a puzzle themselves, but figuring out the best crown combination to defeat them is fun (and often painful).
