Yeah, I don't feel that 2k3 will ever fall out. There will always be a group of us old-school folk that refuse to step up to the next generation. I would never get tired of my old 16-bit graphics.
I see what you did there!
Better call the containment team, we've got drama leaking out of locked threads!
Dymdez: I'd suggest downloading the trial version for RPG Maker XP and VX and give them a spin and see if you like them. There's definitely a learning curve attached to them, it's practically assumed that users will be using scripts in one way or another: Either making your own, using others and maybe changing them to suit your needs, or just to streamline / adlib some event commands.
Here's some examples of what you can do:
Last Scenario by SCF is a RMXP game that starts as Generic JRPG before spinning things on their head. Nothing too fancy with scripts, a few changes to the battle system and menu and an explorable map, but the writing is top-notch once the game hits stride.
Exit Fate also by SCF takes that "nothing too fancy with scripts" and overhauls half the game internals. If you've ever played a Suikoden game it's a RMXP version of the series with SCF's own twists and improvements (like no missable characters). The battle system is completely overhauled, characters function much differently, and there's a war tactical minigame. It's what you can do with determination, knowing how to script and draw, and a lot of elbow grease.
The Reconstruction by Deltree is another completely overhauled RMXP game. Again a great example of what you can do when you want to make a great game.
If you want to see what RPG Maker 2003 can do, I'd suggest Hero's Realm by Kentona. It makes great use of what RM2k3 can do and is chock full of things to do without ever feeling like the game was fighting the engine like so many 'advanced' RM2k3 games do. It's covered in polish, charm, and entertainment and I'd give it the Crown of All Rm2k3 Games.

I'll just advocate Rm2k3 for life out of spite ^.^ haha kidding.
Cool game but it's the clash of hi-res and low-res (and RTP) that ruins it for me. Good effort though, it's definitely closer to my tastes. I just like everything being 16-bit. The text, the icons, the monsters, the backgrounds. It's not a logical preference, it's totally a personal and nostalgic feeling that won't be changed.
*waits for things to get personal*
I think the OP has all the info he needs at this point. Now this will probably turn into the spill over of the "which engine is better" debate. Fun.

I've heard Last Scenario and Exit Fate mentioned way too much. I've heard Last Fate and Exit Scenario mentioned way too much. I've heard Scenario Fate and Exit Last mentioned way too much. I've heard Fate Scenario and Last Exit mentioned way too much. I've last Heard Fate and Mentioned Scenario exit too much. Mentioned exit too way much is Scenario Fate and Heard Last.
Wolfcoder, every one of your posts in here is a complete abomination.
Continue being a fuckhead at your own risk.

I am new to the community.
I LOVE rpgs.. LOVE LOVE LOVE them. But I hate what they have turned into now. We went from FFVI to Fable 3. It's sad to see the direction new RPGs are going. So I did some research and found RPG Maker and this site.
Questions!
In your experience, Which RPG Maker would you recommend?
Is RPG Maker similar to PlayerWorlds or Mirage in terms of actual designing?
For a noob like myself, how long would it take on average to learn and design a game?
If anyone is willing to answer some more questions, Id rather PM than take up precious space in the forum. Lemme kno
Thanks,
Dymdez
Edit: I started reading some stickies and see that I have already broken some rules when it comes to asking for advice. Whoops! Won't let it happen again.
1. In general, I'd say 2k3 or VX. Just my opinion though.
2.from what I can gather about Player worlds(not much Ill admit), theres a bit of a difference.
3.That all depends on your ability to learn how to use your tools as well as accept constructive criticism.
4. I don't really mind PMs, as long as theres a good reason for it and it isn't spam.
Hopefully you've managed to shatter his optimism already, guys.
I swear, it's really not that bad Dymdez.
By the by, Craze: Most people know what you mean by VXP but if someone doesn't know I could see them getting very confused by the term.
