IDEA: "LIKE"

Posts

I know facebook is the ghey, but would it be possible to add some sort of "like" system for RMN? Not just for games, but for screenshots, videos, etc. It'd be separate from the actual rating of the project.

This would be useful if we could see the "latest likes" on the front page or something... in a list of like 20 likes, if possible.

And of course, you'd be forbidden from liking your own shit... and you can only like something from the same project once every 10 minutes or something.

"Liking" forum posts or profile posts might be cool as well.

I'm looking for a practical way for the public to shine some light on a project they think deserves some attention without writing a review... because lets face it, most of RMN doesn't like writing reviews. If we can get even a small spotlight on a project, perhaps someone who DOES like writing reviews will see it and do so themselves.

In any case, it probably shouldn't be called "like".

this is a terrible idea that serves no purpose other than stroking egos. not to mention it would clutter the interface of the site unnecessarily.

forum rep sucks, has always sucked, and will continue to suck. it discourages discussion and elabouration- why bother saying why you like something if you can just click a superficial little button?

were this to be used for voting up games for a feature, i think it could work, but i am still opposed to the idea in any other capacity on the site.
I'm with tardis on this one. Besides being unnecessary and cluttering up the site, it would just be used as a scapegoat for people to not even try, and that's the opposite of what we need around here. If you like a game you can do the smart thing and review it, and if you don't want to do that, leave a comment!

cuz instead of being superficial it can be used to sort the most 'liked' games into more visible, easily accessible items, probably on the front page. having clicked the button doesnt accomplish the same thing as relating why you like it using words so one doesnt replace the other

I'm going to be doing more with this idea soon, but reviews don't have to be big. Lots of 2-3 short paragraph reviews (like 10-20 sentences max, usually) on Newgrounds are more useful than fanwank/haterflame here, because they target exactly what makes a game fun or not so fun. Granted, flash games are much smaller than these, but the idea can still apply.

IMO, it would encourage quality screens, posts, blogs, etc. on the site instead of just updating your blog with a two-line update every month and a half about how you swear to god you're going to keep your deadline, or posting a shmillion screenshots of your sweet town and awesome potion-mixing system instead of taking the time to make something that looks good for everyone to see. When the best looking and most well-written things begin appearing on the front page, people will start trying to achieve "frontpage" status.

I think having a "most liked this week" and a "latest like" list on the front page would help a) encourage quality, and b) allow games getting buried by the flow of new content to surface every once in a while.
What about something a little more subtle, like tracking pageviews? So any time anyone visited a page it would count like a "vote" and the games that are visited the most in the previous day will top some list on the frontpage? No user action would be required, and it would tap into that large group of people who never register an account but still downloads and checks out games.

More seriously, it sounds more like you want more/better search criteria, like searching # of posts or so
Well, no. What I'm suggesting is exactly what it says on the box; a list of 'Featured Games' (or something like it) directly on the homepage itself, akin to the Newgrounds example (I'm not suggesting we be like Newgrounds, nor is this idea unique to them either). Such an idea wouldn't come from what the Staff thinks is best, in fact, there wouldn't be anything subjective about it. The 'Most Popular Games/Blogs/Userpages' what have you would be selected directly from how many views/downloads/comments/whatever it had, it would be strictly by the numbers. It could be on a week to week basis so things can stay new for the users and the players.

As I think about it there probably should be something else to give exposure to the underdogs so they get exposure as well, so I'll think of an idea regarding that.

Pageviews don't necessarily mean the people like what they're seeing, and definitely doesn't address games that aren't receiving enough attention. Though being able to observe traffic for specific gamepages like that might be a neat idea.

But hell, why not both?

And on that note, allowing for a customizable frontpage for users would be sweet.
dammit

i'm really confident my idea is the bomb

i'm not one to toot my own horn on RMN ideas but i really think everyone should just go with it
If you put it that way, Likes is actually a pretty sweet idea. It actually does simplify a LOT of things.
that is a pretty good way of tracking the buzz around games, regardless of whether it is positive or negative
so you want to come up with some complex formula that ranks games here based on a variety of factors and then post that list on the frontpage, and build into this formula some way for the ranking scores to degrade over time so that new material will sift to the top?

How does this jive with my Impression idea I posted a while back? It sounds similar.

or just maintain several separate lists that expire/renew at different rates. 'most liked games of the week/month/season/year'. the ultimate all time classics will stick to the 'year' or 'season' list, popular games of the moment would stick to the month or season list, and new games that experience a short surge of popularity could have their time to shine on the week or month list.
