[EVENT] CHAIN GAME - RMN STYLE!

Posts

There aren't many nature tiles, but it is relatively easy to edit. Just had to fix the damn borders for the water and cliffs. We'll probably need more character sets as well. I could only find four (one of them were doors).

See you in two weeks, Dudesoft! I will get to work on a few areas after exams.

I'm thinking of puttting together some sets made from the FFLegends with colour edits.
Want to post any chipsets you make?
Sure thing. I've got a few more edits to make but I'll post it once done. I'll just be editing the base tiles, though, not spriting much new stuff.
Will we be using any modified 2k3 like Cherry's patches or just the base version?

What about fishing for feedback? I'm thinking leaving some time in your two week span, PM the game to the other participants with a save at the start of your segment and asking for thoughts.
Personally I would have played the previous chapters to get a feel for the game and see what has been done before.

But, yeah, sending it out at each chapters' end will help with feedback and keeping 'in focus', as it were. (And we wouldn't need to spend a part of our two weeks playing from the beginning to check it out.)

Another excellent reason for people to send a copy to everybody for feedback for us poor shmuks at the end of the list of participants!
I'd like to join in as well, though I guess I would have to be 13/14 or something, as may / june would be rather bad
Question #3: What battle style are we going to use? (I don't remember the pros and cons of each but I'd like to throw the question out there now)
please use traditional/large window/automatic

edit: not sure if I want to join this, I really like the art style choice for this though.
I'd go for style C, the one with facesets. It'd certainly look nicer with front view in 2k3. Also, I believe it's the one used in akropolis itself.
While I am throwing shit around, I'd suggest we organize the items database too. Since items are sorted by their ID, I'd suggest we give blocks of the item DB to a specific type of item so they stay organized in-game by item type.

This way we'll get
DudePotion
DecPotion
LennonPotion
DudeSword
DecSword
LennonSword

Instead of
DudePotion
DudeSword
DecPotion
DecSword
LennonPotion
LennonSword
I, too, felt like spriting something. But I'm not happy with it YAY
Also, that turned out pretty much like Terra, so I made a Terra Head. xD

Also.... I dun' now why the hell is Usagi here.

LennonPotion
LennonSword

There is definitely going to be stuff named like this in my chapter.
I like to show up with things that I'm not certain about. So we've got >4 participants, each participant can add one character to the party, max party size is 4. Ruhroh!

Should we have some kind of FF4-plot party changes? Should we make a party selection system that everybody can use? Something else?

This one isn't that important at the moment but something that should be addressed before long.
FFIV party system... For a party selection system would mess everything up, I think it'd be easier to just let the maker control the party, in a chain game IMHO.

This is a great idea. We could just post it in here for feedback, as I assume this topic will be around for quite some time.

I guess just the usual one...? Is there a difference? I downloaded version 1.09... hope that won't screw things up.

Question #3: What battle style are we going to use? (I don't remember the pros and cons of each but I'd like to throw the question out there now)

This is tricky! I want to say standard RTP battle with our own sprites... because we will definitely have to do some work in the battle sprite department... BUT, the monster set forces us to use facing the monster RM2000 style battles. An option of course is that I set all the heroes (set as default blank slates for you) in the battle setup along the bottom. Ths will mean mostly ununiform battlers depending on who you choose to be in the party... but it will be alright.
As far as spriting the battlers facing upwards, we have to sprite them anyway, so whatever.
OR we could set them below the battle window and use the big default window, and have no battler sprites.

Well the way I was thinking was just to tack on and add to the database as it goes along with no restrictions.
So, I'd set up Potion, Hi-Potion sort of items right, and they would cure as needed in a RPG, then others could just use those for their sections. It would be a bit confusing for players if there were like 20 different Potions just for the sake of having our own items.

As for swords and etc, go ahead and name them that! I might be so inclined as to do the same.

Usagi is there to fight evil. Or at least protagonists.

LASTLY in this longwinded message
I'd like to share with everyone the brainstorm between myself and Lennon. Might begin to boil some ideas for you, as it were.

Want to send me your thoughts on the collectibles and your story idea? I will definitely work it into whatever I end up doing for Chapter 1.
I never really developed it that much, to be honest. I guess it would start like dragon quest or something, where a king asks you to do something, maybe? Although, another way to go about the story would be to make it about a travelling group of people, who search for the artifacts because of money/fame or something else.

As for the items themselves, they are all cutlery like I said before. The ones I remember having named are:

Cup Of Courage
Bowl Of Bravery
Fork Of Freedom
Spoon Of Strength/Strongth
Plate Of Patience
Knife Of Knighthood
etc.
I have an idea. What if the protagonist is trying to become a chef, and fresh out of culinary school he is assigned to cook for the Mayor (keep it more modern-ish) and somehow the Mayor is poisoned. Then the chef is quickly accused, so he flees. The poison is a slow-killer, so the chef consults his teacher privately. The teacher then tells him to cure the poison he must collect the aforementioned Cooking Artifacts so he can create the Legendary Last Supper, which is said to have curing properties and was in fact the meal that Jesus and his posse ate in the picture.
haha how about that?
That sounds absolutely amazing.
Looking at the chipsets I've decided it might be easier for everyone if this was sort of world-visiting in essence. It would be pretty handy for changing party members to have a ship as a hub between areas or whatever too.
Yeah, that's what I was thinking as well.

Holy shit, guys! I would've never thought anyone would want to use those graphics, but here it is, and it's the second game that makes use of them. What's hilarious and kind of depressing at the same time is that I never managed to make my own game out of my own damn graphics...

Anyway, you could've told me about this, I would've sent you more graphics in the same style, I've got quite a few more tiles and a handful of sprites. If you want any particular charsets just drop me a line. I'll send you those additional graphics tomorrow, but someone will have to put those tiles into proper tilesets, as I only have them in tile sheet format.
I guess just the usual one...? Is there a difference? I downloaded version 1.09... hope that won't screw things up.

Nah, I doubt it. I wanted to make sure that everybody would be using the same (approximate) version of 2k3; Mostly if we'd be using Cherry's upgrades or not.

Potions weren't a good example because like you said having a bunch of different types of potions isn't helpful. I think my idea still has merit though so if a creator adds battle items there's room so they appear near the top of the menu. Or, less importantly, so Swords and Shields aren't getting mixed up in the menu.

Compromise: Put some room near the top of the item db so there's room for new usables (scrolls, books, switch items) to be put near the top of menu but everything else that isn't important is thrown whereever. It really isn't that important that types of equipment are grouped together in the item menu when they're automatically filtered out in the Equipment screen where you'll be seeing your equipment 99% of the time anyways.

Story Stuff

The mayor? IRON CHEF should be cooking for kings not nondescript municipal officials!

I'd suggest instead of cultry have legendary cooking ingredients. I don't think the Fork of Freedom will help cure the mayor THE EMPEROR as much as making that soup out of Holy Water filled with the Garlic used to kill Dracula or something.

Otherwise I think it can work! I was personally hoping that there wouldn't be world hopping to see what I could do with what I was provided (but dreams and reality like to fight and the seperate worlds idea probably makes this much more likely to get finished)

Oh I see. Yeah, good point. I'll definitely leave say 20 slots open at the top? That way people can add one or two special items. After that, there isn't much point because the later people will be making the later point of the game, where items would appear lower for the most part. This isn't going to play like Befuddled Quest or ALEX. It'll play linear like most RPGs. At least that's the intention.

Alright, we could all vote on the Legendary ____s we need to find. It was an idea that Lennon brought to the table and I went from there. It's totally still up for discussion. I'm still working on the base set up prior to mapping, etc.

As for World Hopping, I was thinking about that in essence; just because there's a lot of futuristic looking spries to use. It would be easy to have a host area where you could go to change party members. Not to say, "you go to GRS World now" but rather "continue the story".
Old maps from other portions of the game would be ideally copy-pasted... but who knows. It's hard to foresee what other people will do down the line. This is linear like I said, so it's mostly up to later people... not me.

DE: Thank you a ton! In advance and for prior sheets. I've always been a fan, and was surprised to see your chipset raised as well! I'm really looking forward to this.
