INTERNATIONAL CONTEST?
Posts
Welp (that seems the right thing to say around here).
I don't mind spending some of my time to get this off the ground but I don't want to do it by myself.
I could promote on Oniromancie, but we'd need someone for the German, Spanish and Italian community.
Would be cool if someone could draw some sort of logo or something as well.
Suppose we pick New Years or Valentine, would that appeal to you guys?
If so, what about the rules? What were the contest rules for your horror contest here at RMN?
EDIT: Yeah Valentine would give more time and with a theme of love could bring some pretty cool stuff.

Yes! I like valentines day! I already have an idea brewing in my head, if that is not against the rules. :X
Hey this could be cool. Maybe make it a big annual competition where teams from different communities have a period of one month to create something. Themes could change every year and stuff too.
But that sorta reminds me of this breakdancing competition.. : http://www.battleoftheyear.de/

god i hate you so much
I'm not half Italian, but I've made a few Italian ladies half black.

Anyway I think this idea is pretty neat as it puts the raw talent out into the ether and it brings international communities, a real last frontier, together for a neat purpose.

As I understand it, this seems to be be a pretty active Italian community.
@YDS: There are no rules yet, good for you.
I think Valentine is a good theme (=theme of love). That would give a good two weeks to organize the contest and two months for the people to get to work.
Who'd like to help to put this together? If no one volunteers, this will go nowhere. I hope other members can participate to make this come true.

I will volunteer putting it together! Though I would love to partake in it so I don't want to be a judge.
That's from the Italian community: <3
@YDS: Could you whip up something attractive to represent the contest? You know, something creative and eye-catching: "International Valentine Contest" or something drawn with wacky characters, with plenty of colours and cute stuff. You know, to leave a good first impression.
I thought about something, since there's no text, people could use sounds (think Mario on the DS here) or facial expressions to convey meaning or just pictures in a dialogue box and so on.
As I've said, I'll take care of Oniromancie.
Is anyone active on Atelier who'd be taken seriously if they introduced the forum. If one of us go there while being unknown people won't participate as much (especially if we start writing in English). The key here is to use known members from each respective communities and use the language of each forum (intercultural). If we advertise in English (think copy/paste here), it just looks like we'd be a bunch of yankees dropping by just for *our* contest.

I am active in Atelier. I don't speak German but I have friends who will translate it for me. What is a good deadline? What are some rules?
We can talk about it via instant messenger, too! (Also a lot of people here aren't from the USA D:)

Alright, so you can be in charge of Atelier then, correct?
I just need someone for Imaginarium and the Italian community (I might know someone for the Italian community).
We can use messenger but I'd rather if everyone threw in their 2 cents about the rules for the contest. The more the contest appeals to people, the more participation we'll get.

So the deadline is ... February 14th, Valentines Day 2011!?!
What are some rules. We can look at rules from older contests.

Not everyone at the same time! (j/k)
Here's some questions about the rules:
Written in italics is my opinion. Nothing set in stone obviously.
1.) Only custom made graphics or is everything allowed?
Everything should be allowed. Custom graphics are usually rewarded by players anyway.
2.) Individual members or teams?
I'd say both but I think working in teams should be encouraged, up to a maximum of 4 people.
3.)The deadline
I'd say February 1st. That would give two months for members to hand in their games and two weeks for members to test and vote (I didn't even know when was Valentine's day... -___-').
4.)Voting system
A poll system where members choose a game for category ex: story, graphics, design... etc...We could set up a poll at one place where people would vote. Everything in the same spot for easy data collection.
5.)Awards
First, second and third place for each category.
6.)Limitations
*Nothing about the games can be shared with members out of the team.
*No text is allowed. Invented languages (which don't mean anything) are allowed.
*Game must be handed in before the 1st of February, Greenwhich Time.
7.)Length
I don't think this should be strict. I think give a general guideline of 10 to 30 minutes (at most?).
Well, I think that would pretty much cover it.
Any more rules we'd need?

How about February the 5th or 10th ? We have a little over a month and a half then. I don't think we should have a length limitation, though.
For voting system the only way this could be a truly cross-community effort is if every participant community had a judge (or two) in the competition.
And of course the most important rule of all: All games should be standalone.

Yes, I agree with that.

So you're saying that games should be rated by judges as opposed to members? From my experience, people complain a lot about that and keep asking for members to vote as opposed to a few selected individuals.

Yes and yes. That's no problem, really.
I hope more members can express their opinions about this as I wouldn't want the rules to be complained about later on.
I'd like to know what you people think about the rules in general and the voting system as well.
And we still need someone to be in charge of Imaginarium and the other community.
Once we've figured out the core people who will work on this it'll be easier to organize this more efficiently.
More volunteers would be awesome. It really doesn't require a lot of time. It's mostly translating the rules to the target languages and then answering questions by members of the respective communities.
As I've already said before, we'd need something classy to represent the contest, so if some of the artists on the board could craft something, that would be great as well.

Yeah but in my experience the members as a group are usually really stupid. And if there are multiple categories there can just as well be a "people's choice" winner from polls as well as a real winner based on judges.
