How about onomatopoeias? Those are rather self-explanatory regardless of the language.

Like POW! for the attack command, KAZAM! for the magic command, BOOM! for a fire spell, KABOOM! for a more powerful fire spell, you get my drift.

the challenge is no text, not no words.
They have letters in France, you know.

What about numbers? If you say no number then this is just too restricting imo.
You know what you do need though?

!"#%!#%&!# when people curse. Because that's the most awesome thing. (add some skulls and some other good stuff if you're not artistically challenged)

wtf ar eyou talking about
I've read at previous pages that numbers are allowed.

Anyway, an Rpg is a game with a storyline. Without tex, you still can create a simple storyline, like:
"Hero near castle"
"Dragon evil upon the castle"
"Hero and his friends hit the dragon"
"The sun rise happily on the free kingdom!".

For such things, no words needed XD
The real challenge is the gameplay, i suppose.

Ah-hem. Forgive me for my bad english. I'm SURE that i've wrote it bad u.u but i don't know where. XD

Unfortunately, that's not the case. They are different depending on the country. There's no such thing as neutral text. As soon as you use one word, then it becomes biased like tardis said.

Numbers are fine in my book as they are present in English, French, Spanish and Italian and are thus neutral.

@Flame: Yes, I agree with you.

I don't get this either.

As far as I'm concerned, text is impossible in such a contest. If someone wants to handle this contest with text, no problem, but I won't be involved in it as it would crush and burn in French communities, I'm 90% certain of that.

We can't justify the use of a certain language because then other communities are put at a disadvantage.

How about letters, when specifying keys on the keyboard? E.G., a key icon with the letter "Z" on it, say. Keyboard layouts may vary from country to country, but this shouldn't be an unreasonable assumption, should it?

Letters are fine as long as they don't combine to make up a word.

Actually, like I've said before, you could have a whole language you made up as long as it's a made up language. Well, that's they way I see it anyway.

Neutrality is the key here. As long as neutrality is respected, then everything goes as far as I'm concerned.

I'd like to read other members' thoughts about this.
The buttons names (action - start or what else) could be in english. (or it may be hard create a tutorial without say what button use.)

But could be forbidden explain what the do. "The action button is blahblah".

A right example: - Draw of a sword!! <3

Ah. And the "Attak - Defence - Magic - Run" buttons, often used in gdr battle systems, are forbidden too? They could be useless afterall.
Well, much to my own disappointment the people at Imaginarium don't seem very interested about this, I guess an International contest is something way out of their comfort zone or whatever. (...)

There are others Spanish rm communities but I wouldn't put much more faith in them, at least not until there is a solid set of rules and stuff, and maybe if some of you guys go there and speak to them, since I have the feeling I'm not very much loved at home anyway, Heh; ...I can help you translate into spanish anything you want.

As for what I've seen discussed in the thread so far... I have nothing against a Valentine's day theme and deadline, but I have my worries about if a month or so is gonna be enough time, I mean, is hard to convey meaning without words, so the need for extra graphics and overall planning, will probably take more time than for an average short game... so maybe, three months?

Also I'm curious about which rpg maker is going to be used? or is gonna be up to every team to decide?
Don't get angry alterego. I think it's better to first prepare well the contest (hosting, organization team, rules) and then present it to the communities (and look for one or two judges of each community, maybe ask for recommendations to the other users).

I recommend following this order. When you have decided a format to host the contest (website, forum), and you have an organization team defined, then they (you) can start to discuss about the rules (as more restrictive they are, most easily comparable will be the games: platform, time duration, and so on).

I liked the idea of no text but the Valentine's day theme... do you know it's not an international holiday? I mean, it's highly extended but for commercial interests and due to the influence of American culture.

I would like to help you in this but I think know I will be really busy these months.

And I have been following this community for years but yes, this is my first post.
Sorry if there are a lot of mistakes or if something it's difficult to understand, I'm not a native English speaker.

Good luck with this
