AN IDEA FOR A COMMUNITY PROJECT

If this idea were to work, people would need to submit..
- 1 Town (at least one)
- 1 map interior per house or floor
- 1 battle area (at least one)
- 1 map per floor of battle area
- 1 "star" item (like SMBX)
- your own weapons & equipment
- your own items
- your own enemies

If you want to make puzzles, go for it.

When a user submits their "region", the leader should post the variables & switches used so no one overwrites. OR when you post "I'll participate!!!" You can add "I want variables 100-150 and switches 250-300."

Maybe your own island and the player would get a boat to travel between them. People can make their island surrounded by mountains, meaning an airship is needed if they don't have a tunnel or transport.

Everything would be imported into the main file at the end of the deadline.
If we got even 10 people doing this, it would be enough content for a good game.
Maps can be refused or edited by the project leader. Reasons should be given if refused. Like your map is empty space.

Is this idea getting better?
I can do something using rpgmaker vx but I prefer to use 2k3. I can do some maps too...
what engine? id probably want to do a little something, in 2k3

is there going to be one definitive graphical style? or choose your own?

are you saying there will be an overall plot?(like saving the world)

what about the characters? does each person use exclusive characters or are a few heroes traveling across everyones maps?

its probably best that this game be fundamentally different than the chain game.
This can be any engine, its just an idea. You would have your own plot. I would assume to work properly, there wouldn't be characters, rather placeholders like FF1 or DQ3. You would have non playing characters.

Of course the person directing this project can choose for themselves. It would just be a pain to go through storyline continuity.

This idea is different than a chain game. 10 people submitting maps could be done in a month or a week. Instead of a chain game, 10 people would be done in 20 weeks.

Ok... I feel like I should step in to help organize. Unless you distinctly assign switchs and variables to People this will be a pain in the ass to paste together, unless you are trying to make a Befuddled Quest / Alex game where each submission is a level and the switches and variables are reset when you enter the hub world. I honestly don't know where this is going, no offense.

Let's discuss the idea a bit more. Are you planning that a single hero goes from point A to point B and along the way goes through user created areas? Is there a giant hub where everything is purely optional? Is there going to be leveling up or just Zelda-type attacking? Befuddled Quest series works well. Maybe consider that style?
I covered switches & variables earlier. This was just an idea, no offense taken.

I would plan that a party of 4 picks their classes and goes through the game. Along the way goes through user created areas. I wouldn't say a hub, but rather steps from the easiest to hardest regions. Leveling up, this is a RPG.

Oh I missed the switch thing, ok cool. Would you be going in to balance the numbers after the
Maps and such are implemented?
Balance the numbers?

Well yeah if people make radically stronger or weaker or plain terrible battle numbers? Ie monster hp / speed / mp / etc
Battles would be handled by the director. If anything, people woul make placeholders. Like make a Lamia with a charm, mute, poison spells, but when it gets copied and pasted in the director would use their own stats for Lamia. To prevent ubering.

Ok those are my major issues. The only real work is pasting maps and changing teleports. Alright cool. Sounds like you just need to settle on a theme / story / graphic style and you're good to go on the main event topic!
I started downloading some canceled VX projects today and saw if I'd be able to easily add them to a world. Just to test my idea. The answer is yes its easy. :-)
