TURN-BASED...DEAD?

I have no interest in RPGs that aren't either classically turn-based (Final Fantasy 1-10) or in first person real time (Oblivion). I think this, actually, more than anything else, is why I did not enjoy Dragon Age.
Does anyone feel the same way?
Not really, because like humans, I tend to judge them on an individual basis rather than a preconceived list of expectations. I bet there is at LEAST one game out there that uses a very different battle system that would really, really appeal to you.
And I do not mean 'preconceived expectations' such as "This game should not be boring," but more like "It MUST have a classic turn-based combat system"
My favorite type of game is turn based rpg. best one ever is chrono trigger, with the dragon quest series following. pokemon is good except they just keep milking the same game with different pokemon. I want to make a great turn based rpg myself, because I want to play it =)
Turn-based will never be "dead."
I think a lot of traditional RPG mechanics are ancient and outdated, and should be dead. However, turn-based battles is a style of gameplay that offers an entire dimension of infinite time to think and react versus anything in real-time.

I never really understood the appeal of active time battles. I know it's not the only alternative to turn-based, but I don't like the pressure it puts on decision-making. Also, unless you can pause the game during battle, you're kinda stuck getting your butt kicked if you get a phone call or something.

LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

Agree with halibabica, but would like to point out that your argument doesn't apply to ATB with wait mode. (As long as it's RM2K3 style full wait mode, anyway, where it pauses and waits even when you're on the first part of the battle menu. FF style wait mode doesn't always wait when I want it to, and is actually called "active mode" in RM2K3, lolz.)
Chess = Ultimate turn based game.
Oh snap! Had an idea, probably can't do it without scripting though...Nvm.

This is secretly turn-based with more turns for faster characters, a la FFX.
...Except you have to sit and wait between turns, and the turn order isn't shown to you.
I like turn-based but dislike ATB. This isn't inherently due to the ATB system itself, but more to the fact that simply waiting for a gauge to fill before inputing commands is frustrating, as there is nothing you can do in-between. The notable exception would be Ar Tonelico, where the player can switch and activate songs when the other characters are waiting.
And yes, pretty much this. If you intend to design heavily strategic battles in your game, this seems the logical route.

I set the ATB speed in I&V so fast that it practically feels like FFX. It takes about two thirds of a second to go from empty to full. So with a full party, that's about six turns per second. And yes, it's full wait mode as I described above, thank goodness!
With RM2K3 being the most commonly used ATB system for amateur RPG making and the only one that doesn't require a bunch of extra work to configure, it's hardly surprising that people around here equate ATB with waiting patiently for turns while nothing happens.
I use ATB because I think effects that make you or enemies get turns faster or slower are really interesting and useful from a mechanics perspective. I have skills that do heavy damage but delay your next turn, or double your speed but halve all your other stats, or stun the target for half a round, etc.

If your ATB speed is so high that it's barely noticeable, it becomes more about creating the illusion of using another system than refining really the ATB itself.
I was more thinking about a noticeable wait time between actions, but with the possibility to do something during said wait time.

If the ATB is that fast, then you may just as well skip the charging bar and make it fully turnbased with the rule that faster characters get more turns. It's kind of like Final Fantasy X does. Of course, if the script you're using doesn't allow it, I can understand that. Waiting 1/6th of a second is almost nothing.
I agree. This topic is pure shit. Different strokes for different folks. Turn based systems can be a blast if done correctly. Hell, I remember when I played FFT for close to 3 days straight when I first bought it.

IF turn-based combat was so unpopular a system then SquareEnix wouldn't make a killing rehashing their older games every year - Final Fantasy 4 (awesome story aside) was rebuilt from scratch for the DS and then again on the PSP and they still left the system alone instead of changing it.
While I've enjoyed RPGs with an active time battle system as well as ones with a turn based battle system, I tend to prefer turn based. It's just a personal preference on my part; ATB games have a different set of strategies a player needs to learn, such as dodging, reacting and making split-second decisions. A turn based RPG requires a player to plan out their moves in advance, carefully manage resources, and infer a weakness in an enemy based on an educated guess.
Essentially, an ATB RPG is like writing an exam, where you are pressured to perform quickly and urgently, and a turn based RPG is like writing an essay, where you have to pace yourself logically in order to get the best possible results.
That's what I think anyway.

I've been obsessed with real time since Star Ocean 2, and I thought FF12's fighting system was the only fun thing about it, so RIP turn-based systems! ^_^
I kid. About the RIP part. Real time is awesome.
