REWARDS FOR GOOD BLOG POST.
Posts
...Or just add a minimum character threshold that has to be met to post a blog post, I don't know, maybe at least 400 characters?
If people want to put up some small incidental questions; ad a shout-box and go to town; there you are - you eliminated the problem in a reasonable manner AND added functionality to the site.

I agree on minimum character limit on blogs as well.
I don't think there should be an award for posting good blogs. Posting the blog, because you feel proud of what you have done or you want to inform people of something that you think it's meaningful to them, should be the reward in itself.

This idea sounds nice on paper (save for the large character req.), but it's not necessarily the length, but the content of the post that should be called into question.
Hopefully somehow that with a requirement:
People with nothing much to post about aren't likely to post, thus forcing people to work on their game more till the point they have enough to post about to post.
Also, most insignificant blog posts really have been just the "pity-seeking" ones that doesn't really offer much except complaints with their life and working ethics.
I certainly know that most people complain on Facebook and Twitter often is because it's convenient to type a few words. But with a requirement, people just forget about it and keep it to themselves.

Adding shout-boxes and a minimum character function just encourages better blog posting. Whether or not you think a posting is stupid is a "problem" that can't be solved unless the site actually starts screening games for quality.
I kinda agree. Only because precious MAKERSCORE is given for blog posts regardless of their length or quality so members who tend to post blog entries of a couple sentences twice a week are racking up the points willy-nilly.
Blog posts are only worth 4 Makerscore. Visions & Voices is worth 420 MS.
Also, minimum character limits make stuff like Nessiah's amazing art blogs harder to put up.

Yeah I know they're only worth 4ms each. But some people post a lot of tiny (and often valueless) blogs very often. Posting a lot of very informative blogs very often is a different matter entirely.
You've got a good point about the art posts though, didn't think about that.
this gave me the idea to start making silly blog posts
can't believe it never occured to me before now O:

I know lots of people who can say so much, and yet so little and somehow manage to keep it up for days.
I would tend to argue that the best reward for posting a good blog would be increasing its visibility. Didn't somebody suggest in another thread a by-latest-response sort for blogs?
<@Ciel> dont need guidelines
<@Ciel> just need the voteup system where 'announcing new charset soon' posts won't be visible for long over ones people like
<@Ciel> it's the miracle cure

Nope. That can't be abused at all.
if you have 50 friends willing to vote up your content and they can outweigh the vast majority of the traffic coming to the site that we don't see on the forums, yes possibly
Well I am killing bad blog posts on sight now, so think twice before you hit submit...
This isn't retroactive so don't worry all you people who have blogged about your favorite frito flavor

i am insulted that you killed my great post and will take my game making business elsewhere unless i get a heartfelt apology

Oldies are probably the worst people to put forth an argument that a system like that is unlikely to be abused because you DO have a bunch of friends willing to vote up your content.
The site turns into a popularity contest. Guess who wins?
I'm still for quality control on blogs though.
i have at most, 15 to 17 people who might vote up something i post. like i said, most of the site's traffic doesn't post on the forums. the upvoting would mostly be done by people none of us can contact. also the number of people on this site outside my circle of influence is greater than 17, even if #shmup is the largest single 'power' here
