REFERENCES IN GAEMS

References are cool and all, but I hate it when a character's dialogue is directly ripped from pop culture... like if a character starts quoting Ron Burgundy, or starts saying things like "You are the weakest link, GOODBYE" or something. That kind of shit drives me nuts. It's not even clever.

Triple Triad is the reason why I have 400 hours on my FF8 save instead of 45 minutes

Same. lol.
I have no writing talent so I make up for it with tons of references that no single person will ever get all of them
Faye: "Male, female, what's the difference? Power is beautiful, and I've got th-"
Elijah: "Yeah, yeah, I get it. Let's stop right there before we delve too far into reference hell."

Dhux's Scar <3
I like little references and have been guilty of putting in-jokes in my work, but only in-jokes that are so subtle you'd have literally had to have been there, otherwise it just looks like a normal line of dialogue.

^This. Triple Triad was addicting
References can be good, depending on the situation and how overt or subtle they are.

To much and overtly can start to blur the line between allusion and plagiarism ( like family guy can do every so often)
The coolest pool to draw references from is your old games - it was hilarious when there was a gameplay segment in Pokemon XD that is pretty much directly ripped off of Colosseum (the first location of the latter game is near exactly restaged).

??? "plagiarism" does not apply to satire

I have never seen any reference that adds depth to writing.
what kind of shit do you read
Every single genre of every single avenue of creativity and entertainment has notable examples of references, shout outs, and allusions done well. It's a tool that depends on the talent of the person using it, just like anything else. Do it well and its yours.

I think they're fine as long as they don't contradict the game's setting. (I was *this* close to a Princess Bride reference when I remembered my project was supposed to be serious...)

I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

Amateur video games mostly
Also professional video games, but those never have references in them. I guess maybe you could count some of the quests in World of Warcraft, like the Harrison Jones quest line, but those don't add any quality or depth, they just make you giggle for a moment at the expense of totally shattering the fictional world's illusion.

If you are playing World of Warcraft for the immersion you are doing it wrong

not references that you get, I guess, because this is ...

Aside from WoW's Indiana Jones ripoff quests, I'm not sure I can name a single one.

I guess maybe you could count things like Biggs and Wedge in FF6 as a reference but to me that's not really a reference. FF6 has nothing in common with Star Wars except for two character names and one organization name. Neither the characters nor the organization serve even remotely the same purpose in the plot.

If Biggs and Wedge got in Magitek-Wings and flew through Figaro Canyon having extremely dangerous races against each-other, and then later those races proved to serve as their training when they accomanied Locke Skywalker as he took down the Floating Continent with one well-aimed proton tekmissile, then I'd call it a reference. If Darth Vader himself literally showed up as a random cameo and killed them both by choking them to death with the Force, I'd also call that a reference. And in either case I'd also call it a much worse game, because Jesus guys, come up with something original. Cameos and ripoffs of other people's work do not improve your story.

I don't even like the Biggs/Wedge thing as written in FF6. It adds nothing.
locke doesnt know what a reference is

someone help him

According to M-W, the term reference means directing your attention to something by clear and specific mention, while the term allusion is like a reference except implied or subtle.

I don't think that if you're just using a name and nothing else, it really counts. You're not pointing to any meaningful part of the original work.

If you want to count Biggs and Wedge as references then okay sure, I've seen more of them (and still don't think they add any depth)
