It sounds nice, but I can't see much excitement in playing as a beggar. :/
You play game

EDIT*: not to pretend you're in a world even worse than this filthy, silly world of ours. We want to get envolved somehow. And I don't think living as a beggar is involving, unless it's a special beggar of sorts. (And not just a dronk loser. ie. a man whose daughter and wife died in a car accident of sorts, and was driven insave, now has recovered partially but has nothing left.)

*Post confirmed itself. o_o

Edit 2: POST GOT REPEARED A THOUSAND TIMES HOOW COULD THAT HAPPEN? ._.

Vampires: The Masquerade - Bloodlines did a good job of getting players involved in a world far worse than their own. In fact, the entire World of Darkness series is all about a world far worse than our own, filled with poverty and crime. It's filled with barbaric themes, but is still a very engaging game.
Yeah escapism can take many forms. It doesn't have to be "better" it just has to be "different". There can be plenty of engagement in the weirdest and darkest of things. I mean the "shades of brown" and the postapocalypse wouldn't be as popular if it was all about pretending to be in a "better" place.

And living as a beggar is probably more involving than living in a 9-5 job. (gameplay-wise that is) It's a lot nicer to be working a steady job and get by without problems, have a vacation maybe abroad. Some good friends etc. etc. But you have to admit that in a short span of time in a gameplay environment it's probably a lot more exciting to try to make it as a beggar on the streets.

(of course if you're a professional beggar it probably ends up routine after a while too. Hence the "different")

Well if it's either our world Earth, so it really doesn't matter, earth like whatever you call it. Modern cyberpunk without the cyber. So it'll be like That New York Survivor game though. But it's hard to be original.
We always have these fantasy or futuristic worlds in videogames. Should we believe there are no beggars in those worlds? No hunger, poverty, etc...? I think the world involved for a beggar game could be one of those worlds if you wanted. Instead of begging for dollars you beg for gold or gil. Instead of food you beg for elixirs.
Such a beggar already exists:

Anyways, yep. But beggars generally ARE covered in such worlds. Tough they work more like... Scenario elements. It could be interesting, say, playing as a beggar in 2300 AD in CT could be interesting.

Oh, there is such a game found which is a new game for the genesis called "Beggar Prince" Don't think it'll interrupt my process though, just because this game may or may not have enough originality for it. RM2KSurvivor is properly the closet.
