I was testing a cutscene and after I fudged the eventing this happened.
LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

Ok... I finally put the border on the battle hud, but the face itself is a little smaller, as expected. How is it? :D

Uh, guys...? A little help here? :P
well, the bar and everything looks pretty cool in terms of functionality. But aesthetic it could use some work. The letters seems pretty lazy, the portrait border could be more eye-catching. and maybe ad some little effects to the bars since just one color looks plane.
Hm... It's because I wanted them to be in those colors, and I was just trying to make them look simple. Thus, I am not a graphic designer, so there wasn't much I could have done. :D

I don't know what LE MP and DP mean
please use terms that actually mean something to the people reading them
if you're going to make up terms, don't make up @$*#ing acronyms for them
that's obnoxious as shit and gets in the way of gameplay
LE= Life Energy
MB= MegaBytes
DP= Desperate Points

They are related to the game's theme, and the game does tell the players what they are. XD
Is it just me, or does it seem quite blurry?
I think is easy to guess that "LE" stands for Life Energy. But then again, why don't just call it HP? Is the same thing! The same could be said about "DP" to an extent. "Rage" or "Limit" are more widespread terms than "Desperation" imo. "Megabytes" is perhaps more theme specific, but as long as you can avoid using such obscure names, you should... Maybe.

Anyway. Here's a little map I'm working on. I still need to lay out some tiles and whatnot, specially in the 'kitchen'.

I don't see the problem here. I have literally never played an RPG that didn't almost immediately clarify what it's unique acronyms meant. If Detective wants to use creative/obscure names then he/she should go for it, since they only take about .4 of a femto second to memorize. Not every game has to use HP/MP as the standard names for energy.

Yes I know you changed it for a reason
I don't care

If you want MP to stand for Mechanical Pieces or something then that's fine, whatever, I can still tell at a glance what you mean

And yes it's very blurry, but I assume that's because he enlarged it to be bigger than it is in the game, so that we could see it

@ae: good map, nice use of whatever the tiles are (chrono trigger edits?). I'm not sure how I feel about the stairs in the corner. It looks odd but I'm not sure of anything that would look better. I guess I don't think stairs like that usually are behind a door, so the top wall tiles overhanging down over the entranceway to the stairs look odd?
Well, it's for practicity's sake. It's not a big deal because even before you take that fraction of a femtosecond to memorize the terminology in any game, you know you're going to have only three bars anyway: "Life", "Magic", and "Limit"; It has been like that for years! ...Well, certainly no-one expects any different from a game using Rpg Maker's default battle system.

Now, if you have a weighty reason to make those changes. Something that is deeply ingrained in the plot of your game; then yeah, go for it. But if the only reason is because you're trying to be "different" then that's kind of a wasted effort, imo. At best, all you did was opening up a thesaurus, but at that level you're better off using conventional terms instead...

@LockeZ: Duly noted, I'll try to change the stairs... Those are SD3 tiles, btw. =P

Is limit built in now? I wasn't sure if the last one was the turn meter, actually.

Progress in the vein of tedious as hell conversation images. Those pinstripes probably look terrible, but they were just freehanded in paint so it's not worrying me.

Have to agree with LockeZ here. If the bars are actually dramatically different from health/mp then I wouldn't complain much if the names were different as well, but if they're even remotely similar to the current system that everyone always uses then there's no reason not to have the same names.

It's like all the MMOs out there that use warrior-mage-rogue class triangles but calls them something stupid just to sound "fresh". All it winds up doing is alienating new players because they have no idea what the classes are and which one's are which.
Then for anyone who's actually excited thinking they might be some unique and unusual class, all they do is get pissed off when they find out that "Moon Dancer" is actually just your bog-standard Rogue.
I wasn't trying to be obscure with the names, I just like the way Life Energy sounds more than Health Points. Thus, it fits with the plot better, as the term will be used quite many times. :)

And hey, there's nothing wrong with being different.

Did someone tear out your imaginations with a pair of garden shears or something guys?

It's seriously weirding me out and concerning me that there is this sudden backlash against using different terms for the fucking health/mana bars

Well, you asked for help XD, as well, I don't have a problem with the colors but how are they presented, but as I said, it looks pretty functional so I don't think the design affects the gameplay.

I personally don't see what the big deal is. Honestly, playing all these games that feel the need to call stuff Iron/Magic/Abyss Sword instead of something creative, or feel the need to keep to the default Health/Mana/Energy/Meh just grows dull after a while. I'm not saying using the standard terminology is bad or outdated, I just don't see any reason why you shouldn't branch out.

If it's a concern about people that have played a million games before, they should know exactly what they're looking at from the get-go, or can pick up on it quickly. If it's a concern about people who haven't yet played any games, they wouldn't be bound by age-old conventions and will learn to understand these values and what they do the same way we learned what those default names meant.

In short, I applaud your creativity.
I don't see the problem with the unique terms/acronyms. It doesn't take much thinking at all to figure out it's a digital version of hp/mp and whatnot and move on with killing the baddies.

The only acronym I have an issue with is the shortening for "Power Points" and that is because I'm immature and "PP" makes me giggle every time I check how how much mana I have left.

Since we might be getting a wee bit off topic I'll post the dungeon I'm working on.(multiple choices on how you want to get through it, including not fighting AT ALL)
