LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

In a 3/4 view, the number of stair tiles on the ground should be about equal to the number of stairs on the wall, assuming it's about a 45 degree ramp
Yes, but then that just looks silly. I'll have my peeps climb steep cliffs if only so they look better. XD

I guess, if you want to be extremely technical you could look at the height of each step and match it to the height of the wall. Each step tile would be equal to the height of half a wall tile, which means that for a four-high wall you'd have 8 step tiles. It does end up taking a lot of map space, though, and looks rather bleh. (Granted, that's my opinion, but still.)

Any thoughts on the train station? :D

The half step would in essence add a full tile of height but look better, more embedded into the picture. Like so:

I don't know... O.O I still prefer the one on the left.

I like Brady's sketch better, but there are still some details of it missing in your screen, like how he fixed the stairs for the store. Also, I think the roof of the store should be one or two tiles taller. And as for the big stairs, while they make sense now, they still look too tall to me. You should probably add a resting area at the middle of them or maybe even make them more like a stairway.

The building is suppose to lead underground, so I am not sure why the roof needs to be taller. A resting area in the middle?

I'd be lying if I say that looks good. That is how the it would look like if the vending machines are gone. The stairs are made based on this one:

The obvious solution there is to simply not have such high stairs. Having stairs that are four tiles high lets them look logically acceptable while avoiding them taking up the full screen and looking bad.

Personally, I'd rather the logical look over pretty. They can look as good as they want, but if I stop and think "I'd need rock climbing gear if I expect my character to walk up them" then it just destroys the immersion for me.

@Alter: there's not really any spare objects around yet; the maps are as basic as possible at the minute for the sake of getting basic layouts done and leaving fluff object an prettifying till later.
Although "night"? Would have to ask if your screen brightness is right, because although he colours are mostly dark, it's meant to be pretty vibrant, especially with the black outlines o.o
OK. I think the best way out is to go back to the simple one before. I feel like I am just walking in circles now. :O

I was trying to make the bottom part, especially the stairs similar to this one. But things just didn't work out. :P

You could get rid of double stairs in front of the store and have one tile instead. Then it wouldn't look stupid. :/

Oh no! I need climbing gear in a world filled with monsters, clothes that enhance my magics, wizards trying to take over the world with mind-control spells and crazy-ass floating islands. Frankly, suspension of belief for pretty things works fine for me. I'm not gonna measure the height of every step to see if it matches the incline exactly or wonder where the water from the waterfall that falls from the sky above is coming from or why those purple plants are glowing or why the pretty fairy is raping me with her fey majicks.

I guess some people feel the need to question every little detail but that, to me, looks like it's just ruining the fun of the escapism. ^.^

You meant like this? :P

Remove the shadow and it looks fine. Do make the width of the roof longer, though. It's supposed to reference the width of the inside and I've seen how big your inner is. Even if it's by just one tile. ^.^

@Mr.Detective: Well, no. The image I was referring to has the stairs protruding away from the wall by three tiles, not just one. And if you make the resting area two tiles tall it looks decent, I think. And as for the roof, it's no biggie, really. I just prefer a house with a big hat, that's all. ^^; ...What kind of roof is that supposed to be anyway? A Shed one or a Salt box one?

@Brady: Yeah, I can see things pretty well on my screen. Well, it may be a little dark, I don't know. But I mean, c'mon! Those greens are almost in the opposite end of the color spectrum compared to the oranges. @_@

@Liberty So that means I have to cut the bottom stairs for this one, too? :-?

@Alterego It's a little more like a Saltbox one, I suppose.
@Alterego
You didn't really read the post did you? lol.
No it wasn't my map or a mapping example, it was an example of grass and tree palettes which work well together, rather than the current value ramped hue Brady is using.

@alterego:
Never realised you were just meaning in comparison.
Aye, the orange is supposed to be extremely standout; is designed to appear as such in the panels as well as the maps. Although there's only one (there might be a second at the end, I forget) forest map in this story; the rest is inside. Although even then, the orange is meant to be totally standout.

In defiant contrast to the fact that it's all about sneaking around stealthy like :3
@Mr D: Yeah, dood~
I've been trying to convert all the resources of a game into VX Ace format (It never occurred to me before that I could just use the original graphics instead of hunting down an artist).

I have a newfound respect for anyone who makes their own tilesets, it seems like a simple job, but it took me 8 hours just to make a simple tileset.

And here is the menu in action, I made it before I started the graphics conversion.

Funny, because LockeZ told me to make the stairs like that. :)
How about the stairs in this one?

author=Me
Speaking of train station, which of these is better? :D

Look, however you do it is up to you as long as you make sure that you do it the same for each and every staircase in your game. That's the truly important thing.

author=Liberty
Also, I like the first better, but it depends if you're going for a more modern look or steam punk. First is modern, second is steam punk.

@TDS: That right there is some kinda sexy~ God I love that game. Damn mum for selling the cartridge. ;.;

You have to give it some depth, right now your stairs look like a wall. Either have it go past the wall and into the floor, or start it before the wall starts.

@Mr_Detective: Honestly it baffles me that you can't seem to understand how making the stairs 100% vertical looks completely wrong. Not to be mean or whatever, but how the hell can't you see it after we've explained it so much, and even given you multiple explanatory images?

@DemonLamma: Mind there would be no shadows on staircase #1. Dunno if you just forgot about that or not since it was just made for demonstrative purposes.

@TDS: Menus look great, as always.
I feel you on making tilesets though; even simple, basic ones take a lot longer to put together than you ever expect. S'always nice to have a fresh tileset though!
OK, I fixed all the staircases and the roof. :D

I understood, but at the same time, it kinda clashes with what I have before so it took me a little while to sort things through. And hey, no need to get rough. I appreciate all of your help. :P

Not trying to be rough, just have no idea how else to explain it.
However, if you're happy with a vertical staircase, then feel free to completely ignore us: it's your project, and ultimately you're the only person that needs to be happy with it, irrespective of what others think. Worry about making others happy after you're happy with it~
