Well, technically, you can create bottom layers of the bottom parts and overlap them, or even have them overlap in the upper layer. That is, arrange them like that in the tileset itself. Hell, you can use events too. Of course, that's less likely than in 2k/3 due to event lag but it's still possible. ;p
That would still require an image editing software. And if you can do that, then you're capable of parallax mapping.
Sometimes you just don't want to worry about resolution, picture sizes matching up with map dimensions and grid vs passability issues. I prefer edits myself, but I was just saying that it's not a necessity to use pictures if you just want to add a bit of overlap with items if - a) you've enough room on your tileset, b) you're using said piece over and over and/or c) it's just the one thing (characterset).
You guys might not want to call it Parallax Mapping since parallaxes were intended to have layered backgrounds scroll at different speeds to give the illusion of distance. You're using a simple background or panorama not a parallax.
It is what the community calls it, I'm afraid. It didn't used to be called that but just like chipsets became tilesets and charactersets became sprites, panorama mapping became known as parallaxing, even if technically it doesn't make sense. >.<;
LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

author=LibertyYou've got it backwards. Charsets, chipsets and parallax mapping all are outdated names that only ever got used because they were the terms used in the folder names for the Japanese versions of RM2K and RM2K3, back when there wasn't really a standardized term for them (and especially not an english one that was commonly known to Japanese people). Don Miguel kept the names the same when he translated RM2K and RM2K3 to English, so we got the names too.

Everything from RMXP on has referred to them as correct names: characters, tilesets and panoramas. But it doesn't matter because we are an incestuous cesspool of obsolete ideas and/or using the terms ironically

My new map :P I love spriting Japanese/Anime style chipsets. They fit with my persona2 chars more than most of the chipsets available on the net.
Some of you find parallax mapping hard? :/
My only experience with it is in RM2K3. I have been doing it since I started. lol
BTW- If people are still wondering how to run RM2K3 in Japanese and the japanese games, use a program named "Applocale".
haha And now that they're the common terms, if you don't use them people won't initially understand what you're talking about. Maybe the next generation of RM'ers will break those bad habits. Yes we can.
Excellent screenshot noacceptance! (Your work is one of my favorite!)
Makes me think of Resident Evil :)

This is a little transitional area I whipped up. Somebody a while back accused me of overdoing the ruins, and I'm continually seeing that they're right. Still, I love ruins I suppose. If anyone is interested in FF3j graphics I've ripped a lot of them and am planning to put together a resource pack at some point(in rm2k3, of course, boo, hiss!). Until then, anybody with an 8-bit passion can get at my edits in my locker and are welcome to use them however they want, and if anyone has anything else THEY would like to share...

Tile Mapping vs. Parallax Mapping = Tile Mapping is restricted to 32x32 square and to 2 layers. Parallax mapping has no restrictions to the grid and layers are endless.
Currently trying to make parallax mapping relevant inside a house.
See how I put the plants, this is not possible with tile mapping.
Ah, I see. Is it hard to keep track of stuff like what the player can walk on?
I'd also like to see how a game made like that feels to play. Any Paralax Mapped game suggestions? :D

That's beautiful!

Had to post these after looking your pics. I started working on my old project again after seeing your pics from few months back. Thanks for inspiring.

(I took a peek at your locker and used the mountain tileset for that mountainfort)
Sooz
They told me I was mad when I said I was going to create a spidertable. Who’s laughing now!!!

Those are some sexy castles.
Commissar- You just made my day to say that, and that my friend is one hot mountaintop. Right now I'm going through and putting monsters, battle animations, weapons and spells in to the editor, so tell me if there's anything you're looking for I might have. Also, I'm using my locker for everything these days, so keep checking back!
And thanks to Joseph_Seraph and Unity, thank you for the kind words as well. I keep wondering if I'm wasting my time with whole 8-bit aesthetic, when 16-bit is paleolithic at this point. Glad to see I'm not alone.

Just a screen showing the evented text system I'm working on ( I don't need no ATS XD ).
Hmm... Man-Candy. XD
The older textbox, using an ATS.

Nice, lush maqps! :)
That girl somehow looks like a green lightning to me, lol
Anyways, and yeah, characters over message windows for the win

been wondering, I want to make a small SRPG But I can't stand to map for it.
I hate RMVXA's default maps, and I can't get to make a tileset that screams "tactical", so I decided to go like this. :>
(btw GTBS is so confusing when it comes to isometry ;_;)
edit: backdrop from Chaos Generations; I'm yet to align the charset appropriately and I NEED TO RELEARN RGSS SO THAT I CAN MAKE A PRETTY HUD ;_;
(and smooth cameras, gtbs's default cameras for changing unit turns are so anticlimatic)
