ugh a hard question, X5 and X4, they are soooo amazing, i lvoe all the Megaman games below X8 (Lol Square syndrome, i love all the FF below 10 XD)
X5 was...alright, but that timer thing...and the upgrading system...ugh.

I would rather play X5 than X6 or X7, anyday, but X8 was pretty good.

It's sad that my brother sold almost all my X games, but I do have most of the classic ones still hangin' around! Good times.
Megaman 2, 3, X1, X2, X4, and 9 were the best of the series IMO.

As well as Megaman Soccer for SNES.

They were all fairly good, and competent.

I'd like to know where you got the idea that people disliked the Megaman X Series, though. As far as I can tell from the responses here it is pretty universally liked, at least in its early stages. I never felt the addition of story and depth was necessarily a bad thing, but I found that the later X games (X5-X8) were more about LOLSTUPIDHARD levels and stupid easy boss fights. I always preferred the boss to be equally challenging (something I got out of X4, for sure.)

I pretty much ignore the Battle Network, Starforce, and Zero/ZX series as they all diverged from the equation too much. That isn't to say that they were good games, in fact I quite liked Zero and ZX, just its hard to compare them to Megaman/Megaman X.
Megaman 3 fer the Pea Sea is th'best one, ayep.

Sees the lurid glow of a thousand flamethrower pilot lights coming online

Kidding! KIDDING!

Actual favorite was probably MM3/NES, on the grounds that I enjoy messing around with mechanics, and there was an open secret about using the second controller for some interesting stunts there. High-jumping out of a bottomless pit - after losing all HP on the meter - and continuing on to beat the stage boss has to qualify as my own favorite moment from that.

X4 because you can get every enemy, boss and map hazards patterns down and beat the game without any upgrades and using only the buster/saber.

This also applies to every X game from 1 to 6 (well, the buster upgrade is mandatory in X1 since it forces itself on you so it depends on if you count that in the same way Reaper Sigma in X4 counts with Buster only)

I would have to say... Megaman 9. Even though it's not as old as the classics it's based on, I felt this game was the most memorable, and even beats 10 in my opinion. The levels were difficult to master and in some cases, harder than the bosses, and the OST is one of the best of the franchise. Can I get a WE ARE THE ROBOTS!?

I second favorite might be Rockman & Forte, just because you get to play as Bass and exploit his brokeness (seriously, the guy can DOUBLE JUMP, RAPID FIRE SHOTS THAT CAN BE AIMED ANYWHERE, and DASH LIKE MEGAMAN X), but even so the game was still hard. I liked how the bosses didn't completely rely on weapon weaknesses, either.

I agree that Megaman 7 was the worst. For the first classic-series megaman game to go on a 16-bit system it felt really uninspired. The music was forgettable (minus Burst Man's and Junk Man's theme) and it was a bit too easy.

For favorite robot master, I don't know. I like Heat Man, just because of the design concept of being a humanoid lighter.
Megaman X2 has always been my favorite. Not only does the game have awesome music and great bosses, it's just solid all the way around!

I would love for Capcom to do a Megaman Maverick Hunter X2!
Top three from best to not-quite-as-best: 3, 2, X1.

Also, I disagree that MM7 is the worst. It can't be, because it is at least twice as good as MM8 and 80% of the X series.
