WHY I ALMOST QUIT RPG MAKER (SEVERAL TIMES)
Posts
Now I know that can't speak for everyone who has made games, or still dose. However, I know that some people have almost quit for the same reason I almost did. I remember way back in like 2000 when I became fascinated by the RPG Maker program, it was a dream come true for me as an avid RPG fan. It was a long and stressful road learning the program, but I got all the basics down. As time went on, I was able to master more and more things. I was so amazed at the progress I was making, I felt really good about myself. It was then, that I decided it was time to release my work to the community and see what other people can do as well. It didn't go exactly as planned. I started to check out other peoples games. I started to lose confidence as a game designer. I kept getting frustrated because I wanted to do things that I saw other people doing. I just wasn't at the same skill level, not to say I wasn't talented at it, but I just couldn't do certain things. My love for game design was about to end, but then I sat down and thought. "Hey, what am I doing?" I cant quit just because other people are better then me. So, I had to suck it up and accept it. Which I did do. Now to this day, I am as happy as ever and wouldn't want it any other way.
At least space out your posts.
Because you should leave one blank line.
I quit several times, I just kept trying to come with better ideas. If not the worst.
Three games in progress, mostly Ligara.
I just lost a little interest over Dreamwalker, because of how I lost some of the dialouge work I done. I should back up text using rmtext.

yeah, I just didn't want to quit because someone was better then me. you know what they say, someone better will always come along.
I quit because I have ADD...and graphics, mostly making graphics. They take forever and all that. Unlike using rips, everything is there and you just assemble them--which is tons easier and a lot of fun. Imagine like just doing the systems since it's already there and just going dakka dakka mode on the game making aspect.
That's why I'm glad BBI already had everything done for me. I just have to assemble them in the game.

There will always be tons of people better than you... in real life and in the internet. That's the way it is. Live with that!
But you should do YOUR thing. Focus on YOUR shit. Make it something special. Don't do the same standard mainstream crap tons of others do. That's the way to do it, do it your way.

Right. Exactly like Deacon has said: There will always be somebody better than you at something, just like there will always be somebody better than me. But do you decide to pack it in just because your skills aren't up to par with everybody else? No! Just focus and do the very best you can, and eventually, you will be on the same level and same pace like all of us. It's stupid to quit over something just because you may not have the same level of graphic capabilities like everybody else, or something like that.
Remember, "Winners, never quit. They just keep on winnnnnninnnnng!" :D

Question: why are you telling us this? I mean, it's not like you're the first person to ever feel disheartened about being worse than other people.
You didn't even poise a question or a point for discussion. You just stated a story.
Yeah, cool story bro. Point?

One important thing to remember though.
Whenever someone better than you quits you're one step closer to the top! (And even if someone worse than you quits that's one less guy you need to worry about)
I can't speak for the others, but I have indeed felt the same way as you at a number of points in my life. Over the years I learned that it really isn't about the world; it's about you.
To be more specific, it's about one's attitude when faced with skills and abilities one doesn't possess. When this happens, one can either become depressed and lose confidence, which is perhaps the most common reaction in our cynical world, or one can become inspired to improve. I used to experience the former reaction, a lot, but I've learned that once one gets over the initial disappointment and anxiety, one appreciates having a new goal, and vastly improves in an environment where they are challenged.
(Keep in mind this only applies to personal achievement. If somebody isn't making enough money to live comfortably, for example, or otherwise faces real burdens to success, that’s a different kettle of fish.)

The fact other people are better than you can be discouraging, indeed.
Turn it into motivation to crush them. Power yourself with your envy, strap the green-eyed monster to the yoke, and mak harder than you've ever makked before.
It gets a lot done!
...Of course, very rarely is anything ever a competition, so why care?

Right. Exactly like Deacon has said: There will always be somebody better than you at something, just like there will always be somebody better than me.
What? I always thought Brent Murray is #1.
I've "quit" a few times, but never because anyone was better than me. I've known that all along. The way I look at it, a lot of folks here make The Elder Scrolls while I make King's Field. There's a definite gap in skill in our community, but it's all cool. Even the lesser skilled people can still make games that will entertain at least some people. The way I look at, if even one person on RMN or wherever says "I had fun playing your game!" then you succeeded.
My reason for quitting off and on has simply been lack of motivation. It's usually the result of not being able to get the graphics I want because, unless we're good at pixel art, we absolutely have to rely on whatever rips are out there if we want something decent looking unless we want to make some pretty poor looking custom graphics... And the problem with this is that rips that match what we have in our minds can be very difficult to come across.
Also sometimes I get overwhelmed with everything I have to do and it burns me out. For instance when I worked on Blackmoon Prophecy like a demon for about four months straight non-stop and accomplished more in that period than I did in a few years, I was just completely burned out and left the game alone for about three or four months because I just had no desire or motivation to work on it at all.

My current project is with Sim RPGMaker 95. It gives me the benefit of blaming the antiquated engine for any shortcomings.
I doubt I'll ever lose interest in making games. I've wanted to do it since I was a kid and my creative urges must be satisfied. When I'm an old front porch bastard with a shotgun still making games, hopefully I'll at least be able to say "I do it for a living."

I believe that the whole point of making amateur/indie games is the possibility of making things no one else would... making things that reflect yourself, things that are fresh and new, experiment with the possibilities of game design. In that sense, this whole "better" thing doesn't make any sense. You can be the best rpg maker game developer ever, but XBOX games will still be way better than your pixel stuff.
I would use RM 95, too, if it would run on my computer... :-(
Unfortunately imported RM95 graphics look crappy in RM2k...

Completely untrue.
They have the advantage of a substantial budget and skilled technicians and artists, but that's no substitute for a great idea.

What do you call a xbox360?, because then you turn 360 degrees and walk away.

You just made me die a little inside.
Without what we had in the past, Xbox would just be a nerd's little, wet dream.
People can still out-do what we have today, with 'pixel stuff' if they are professionals in that and have the time and dedication in making the classic style come back to life, and the team of people dedicated, as well. Story>Game-play>Graphics.
It isn't about having high definition, 3D graphics. You could polish a turd, but it still is a turd. 3D graphics won't make a crappy story line, or Game-Play any better. Which is the case with many games for this generation. Because they couldn't do better quality games, back in the day, they could only focus on quality of story, and how the game-play functioned.
(Don't need a team, but it helps take stress off of each other. More or less.)
Please, reread what you just said. You just made an angel weep.
