I believe that the whole point of making amateur/indie games is the possibility of making things no one else would...

I think this part of calunio's post has been forgotten.

Amaeture doesn't mean 'different'. It means 'Not of a professional level'.

Also, Indie, well, it doesn't have to mean you're trying to make something different that no one else would make, as most people copy from other concepts and games, to try to make it different, which defeats the purpose of making things no one else would.

It could just means you're an individual person, or group, not associated with the big game companies, whom are trying to make something. Doesn't have to be different enough that others hadn't thought of it.

making things that reflect yourself

ok, I forgot this part, i.e. "different" not in the sense of innovative so much, as mainly of unique, because personally inspired.
see, its communities like you guys that make me want to continue, well at least its another reason. A lot of people on here are great programers and there are the people that are not so much, but they don't care. Long story short, you guys rock :)
communities

PLURAL? Well, we have RMN only... if RMN goes offline, we will be screwed! I searched and I am still searching for a second community that can motivate you as an RMer, just in case RMN goes offline... but I can't find one. All the others suck ass, unfortunately.
Even Creation Asylum has fallen... Gezz we need to bring the RM comuninty back to life as a whole.
Impossible as long as the other boards refuse to say goodbye to their shitty forum game presentations. Also there is no other site which has the feature to submit reviews. That's a very important point in my opinion because reviews is the only true feedback. Posts and comments all alone are not very satisfying.

That is excatly correct. In my mind, the most sucessful RM sites follows the same classic Gamingw style, where each person can set up a gamepage on a hub site, and then have the fourms be a separate, evil entiy. That is the sucessful design that the other sites do not recognize, that RMN is pretty much built on. In my mind, this is the new gamingw, in spirit and in function.
Forum as "evil entity"? I would say the database and the forums are more melted together as in other communities where the database is quite worthless and people consider "good posts" more important/bigger contribution than reviews...

... This is where my skills with english, show their lack of polish on the arms. I was referring to the separation of the site and the fourms, which we have achieved here quite nicely, I might add.

Good posts, in my mind are not always as valuable as reviews. With reviews, people can enjoy and accept the fruits of their labors much more, as it correlates directly to their works. A "good" post is neutral, and does not necessarily help anyone in any fashion, nor does it have to be about anything in reality.
well, there is a few other successful communities out there.

That's interesting, which are there ( so we don't becolme totally autistic!)?

Who cares? Because "posts mean jackshit" B-) As long as there is no "like/dislike" button for posts like on YouTube there are no good or bad posts.

Now I know that can't speak for everyone who has made games, or still dose. However, I know that some people have almost quit for the same reason I almost did. I remember way back in like 2000 when I became fascinated by the RPG Maker program, it was a dream come true for me as an avid RPG fan. It was a long and stressful road learning the program, but I got all the basics down. As time went on, I was able to master more and more things. I was so amazed at the progress I was making, I felt really good about myself. It was then, that I decided it was time to release my work to the community and see what other people can do as well. It didn't go exactly as planned. I started to check out other peoples games. I started to lose confidence as a game designer. I kept getting frustrated because I wanted to do things that I saw other people doing. I just wasn't at the same skill level, not to say I wasn't talented at it, but I just couldn't do certain things. My love for game design was about to end, but then I sat down and thought. "Hey, what am I doing?" I cant quit just because other people are better then me. So, I had to suck it up and accept it. Which I did do. Now to this day, I am as happy as ever and wouldn't want it any other way.

I have actually only ever felt inspired by games that were better than mine; they made me want to take my games to the next level.

It's games that are as good as/worse than mine but more respected or popular that have made me want to quit, along with a general lack of appreciation and well, other interests.

But games that I generally/genuinely recognized as superior made me want to gam mak more, not less.

Yes, unfortunately... but I guess that's the way life is. I mean even at school other kids got better grades than you sometimes, just because they kissed the teacher's ass.

MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
well, i count XP and VX communities as same thing, they are all game making communities. Hell, I could be wrong, but its just my opinion.
But they ignore 2k(3) stuff there... which is retarded because RPG MAker is all the same stuff. Okay, the solution is different, but that does not make a better gam. Here on RMN there are lots of guys who like to make gams with NES graphics. Would be pointless to use VX or XP for that.
yeah i do agree. I am an avid RM2K3 user and I hated when I was ignored because I used a "DATED" program. What bugged me most was the fact that, people commented and actually liked some really crap VX/XP games yet my RM2K3 game was better then them and I got no feedback what so ever.
