This is the only sports game I've ever played where you could attach a rocket to the ball and fire it over the other team's heads. Dial the wacky meter up to eleven.

Base Wars on NES was an amusing baseball game featuring robots. I don't remember if you could attach rockets to the balls, but you could definitely outfit your robots with weapons and battle a baseman for a steal. Other crazy sports games include Baseball 2020 and Mutant League Hockey... The latter of which I could never win legitimately and instead relied on chainsawing the opposing team's players until they forfeited.
I am pretty sure I know what game you are talking about because I cheated with Google. It's for SNES and features some of my favorite all-time favorite animated characters. I have never actually played it.
