THE WORLD ENDS WITH YOU
Posts
This just came out recently in the US. It's for the Nintendo DS, it's produced by Square-Enix, it's an action RPG, and it looks really different. It also looks incredibly awesome.
Three things are promising. The first is that the art style is really crazy, kind of like manga meets street graffiti meets Jet Grind Radio. The second is that instead of being set in some pseudo-medieval fantasy land (which are getting a bit overused), the story is set in Shibuya; this is kind of a stroke of genius, because suddenly all the oversized belts and zippers and stuff that were kind of grating in Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts almost fit. Finally, the kicker is that battles take place on two screens at once. So not only do you guide the main character around on the lower screen with the stylus and attack monsters, etc., but you also have to use the directional keys in a sort of complicated multi-route DDR sequence to attack enemies on the top screen with you other character, while you play a memory card-game that allows you to use "limit break"-ish attacks. You have to do both things at the same time, and while you can set the top screen to auto, determine the A.I., totally adjust the difficulty at any point in the game, etc., since both characters share the same HP bar if either one is getting beaten up, you are screwed.
It gets a lot stranger than that, but anyway it looks really interesting and anyone not turned away by J-Pop or unlikable protagonists should really check it out. It's been out in Japan for a while, and reviews have generally been positive, sometimes really positive. I'm having a lot of trouble posting images on this forum so I can't really post any screenshots, but the trailer pretty much sums the whole thing up anyway so there's a link to it right below.

The fact that it's set in modern times already earns it +100 points. I'm definitely going to have to give this a go sometime.
That's the feeling you get with ALL of Nomura's artwork, Veridianne.
I thought this game was called "Its a Wonderful World?" Or is this like a sequal. Oh I dunno. It does look cool thought. A very welcome change!
That was the japanese name.
Another trailer:
http://www.gametrailers.com/player/33167.html
...and other features include:
-Enormous hip-hop/J-pop/techno soundtrack which fits pretty well with the setting, so long as you're used to that sort of thing
-No random encounters--you literally choose when you want to fight battles, and can even chain battles together using psychokinetic powers for bonuses
-Your character is invisible to the mortal eye, so in order to carry out objectives you have to read people's minds, implant "memes" into their heads and mess around with other people's ouija boards
-You gain a bit of experience if you leave off playing the game for a long time and then return, sort of like in World of Warcraft, except different
-You can also gain experience by using Wi-Fi to connect with people who also have a copy of the game; you can even set up a shop for people who own copies of the game to buy from for extra cash
-You can change the difficulty at any time, and even decrease your character's level while out of battle; the weaker your character in comparison to your enemies, the more loot you get
-Since the game is set in Shibuya, there is a lot of shopping--wearing clothing increases stats, but your character must have enough Bravery Points to wear certain types
-This being Shibuya, different brands are more trendy in certain areas than in others; so in a district brand A might be twice as powerful while brand B might only be half as powerful, but by fighting enough in an area the equipment you use gradually becomes more "in", etc.
-Instead of raising levels, your characters must eat food; food requires a certain number of bites to digest, and since the game is divided into days you only have twenty-four bites each day to digest
-Plus, 300 pins to collect and use in battle; you can even level them up (although since some pins are different brands, a couple of the effects are repeated)
-There is also a minigame, but people tend not to care about those
The game itself isn't very long, but there's a lot in it.

That was the japanese name.
I'd say that is the case with his most recent character designs ... True.
On a side note, I don't care much for the music selection ... I think I'll pass.

Man this is nothing like real life because in real life being naked increases stats.
Personally I think this game looks and sounds completely awful. I'm not going to try and dissuade someone from liking it because that's what people on the internet do and it's pretty lame (unless of course we are discussing a certain someone who is totally PSYCHED for the next The Mummy sequel). The premise and the game mechanics sound awful and the art is terrible. I guess I can maybe see that it would click with certain people but I think that any American who thinks that he feels the vibes from this game is pretending big-time.
If you say that it's made by square enix then i'm gonna have to play it. I feel obligated to play anything they make. :P
It came out in Europe first lol so um yeah played it, got to Day 4. So far, not really calling it a potential DS game of the year but it has it's ups. Kingdom Hearts fans will eat this game up and anti KH fans will think otherwise (like me).
Basically you're a loner with an annoying girl who have to save themselves and lo and behold the world (indirectly but it's all still the same). The clothes thing is quite good admittedly and the eating digest system is really well implemented. The pins you use in battles have varying effects and you can level them up without playing so I stopped playing since last week and I should have a lot of PP now.

Video games really should not have any type of points that starts with the letter "P", because the acronym "PP" is just way too unintentionally hilarious.
PP is fine by me. ;D
I just played some more of this game and it's completely taken a twist. If I mention it, it might spoil the game so I won't say anything but TWEWY is those games that start off okay then get better and better.

I want some PP on my Wii, please.
Anyway, FD said that this is pretty 1990's and I like the 1990's so this is great.

Finished the game last week. What can I say? Best RPG I've played on the DS and that includes Pokemon D/P, Mario and Luigi Partners in Time, Contact, FFIII and many more. The DS lacks really good RPGs IMO.

By degrees.
I have the game, haven't finished it yet.
The story (so far) is not exceptionally bad or good; it brings to mind typical manga plot devices. The story is supposed to be unique or something, but reminds me more of how hyped up SSB:Brawl's single player story was-- and came off looking like an 11 year old's dream fanfiction involving all his "fav chars :DDD". The music will mainly appeal to weaboos and anyone who actually likes JPop.
The battles take some getting used to, but are actually fun when you start getting high combos going and sync with your partner.
The game focuses more on dialogue than exploration, so the environments are small, grey, and go unnoticed.
Overall, I pick this game up and play it when I remember it. The only thing above average would be the battles.

Been playing it actually, shit story/dialogue/art so far, but I like the soundtrack and gameplay. Also auto-attack for top screen is for pussies.
