I'm sure a couple of games in the 90s would've got 100% on metacritic if the internet was so popular back then.
Metacritic actually ranks games going back to 1995-1996 or so. You can find the metacritic score for pretty much any PlayStation or Nintendo 64 game.

I have only really met one person who didn't enjoy GTA4, and his was only a minor "I don't think it's as good as the other ones in the series". Oh well, people have their preferences. I always get ripped on because I thought God of War was pretty bad. The only real fun thing about it was the bosses.
