--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

At a certain age, it's expected that everyone will go on an "adventure", traveling the country, meeting people, and learning about the world. Today is your birthday. You're of adventuring age, and your friends and family have gathered to wish you safe travels...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Suikomon is a fantasy RPG with "MSPaint-style" graphics (for lack of a better term; I did NOT actually use MSPaint; I would die). It's cute, silly, weird, and a little epic.

Suikomon is not done yet, but I'm releasing it at this stage of development because I'd love to get your feedback! Let me know what works for you, and what doesn't. There's a lot to discover in the game already!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Things I've drawn inspiration from:

  • PsyPets: a web-game I ran for 7 years. It's a smorgasbord of ideas, wrapped in a silly package. 7 years is a long time to work on a project; that game's ideas will be with me for the rest of my life. I think that's a good thing :)
  • Wuppo: a platforming action-adventure RPG that Steam kept insisting I look at. You win this time, Steam! Wuppo was an excellent game, with silly graphics, wonderful world-building, and an epic plot.
  • Suikoden: when I was a kid, this Play Station 1 game BLEW MY MIND. Collecting characters to build your very own castle... down to the kid who says "Welcome to such-and-such Castle!" I was in love with this game. If you're familiar with the Suikoden games, you will see its influence clearly in Suikomon.
  • Pokemon: the initial concept for Suikomon was Suikoden + Pokemon (hence the name). I think Suikoden is the larger influence, but the casualness with which you - the player & PC - are expected to engage in adventure is definitely a core part of the Pokemon games. (The Sequelitis video on the Zelda games is also an influence here.)

So, I gave this a super-short whirl. One thing that seems to stick out the most to me is on the status screen. There's obviously something under "Counterattack", but, the text is cut off.

Walking speed fells on the slow side to me? I'm not 100% sure. It's probably "normal", and I'm used to dashing always being on, or whatever! Might be a consideration to add a toggle for dashing in some way, shape or form, though? Even if it's a "Press 'Shift' to dash!" deal.

Otherwise, it seems like a cute game. Not sure how much influence the choices made at the fortune teller have, or what effect wishes at Sparkling Lakes will have yet, but, I'll try to play more some time later.

WUPPO! WUPPO! WUPPO! WUPPO! WUPPO! WUPPO!

if it's inspired by wuppo it's guaranteed to be good
@Marrend ah! what a nostalgic song! :)

reegarding cut-off text on status screen. yeah, I need to fix that. thanks for reminding me.

regarding shift-to-dash! shift-to-dash is a normal feature of RPG Maker MV, which I've completely overridden/customized: a little later in the game, you will receive an item that increases movement speed to a run, and adds shift-to-not-dash :P

the fortune teller choices do have consequence. getting Adventure, Curiosity, and Compassion is a system all of its own, with rewards for getting different amounts.

the wishing lakes are not done; there is no reward for them right now.

the download is a little old, now. I'll get an updated version up later today, which introduces the main plot, has several more characters to collect, more recipes, a couple new mechanics, an incomplete farming system >_> and the beginnings of the open world. save games will probably NOT be compatible between versions, due to the added plugins!

@Frogge Wuppo was so good :P haha. I bought that game without knowing much about it before hand, and was super-pleasantly surprised. what a delight!
