Ashes of Roses is a Sci-Fi thriller about exorcists, Shakespeare, and a hunk with a slasher smile. It is a direct sequel to Wine & Roses, although you do not need to have played Wine to enjoy Ashes.

An elite squad of exorcists has landed on Earth hundreds of years after humans left en masse. Floating alone above the wasteland planet is Heath, a rookie communications officer tending to the IGSS Delilah. As Argent, Carmanth, and Nynavae fight through the ruins of Fort Adder and the hellscapes below, Heath has a visitor on the starship...

  • Unique battles test your exorcism skills. Each encounter is fought once, from miserable cultists to horrible demons.
  • Flexible characters let you fight your way. The three Roses have specialized Gifts to pick and choose from, allowing you to design your preferred play style. Strategically match their Gifts to the ancient Spells you discover within Fort Adder, letting you tackle any foe!
  • Sinister words and dire consequences threaten the mission. Humans are only human, after all, and Heath is no exception. He'll narrate the story via radio calls during battle and exploration, all while he drifts in orbit around a ruined Earth...

Dramatis personae, from left to right:

  • Argent, skilled weaponmaster and defensive exorcist. Her wisdom thinly veils a snarky and direct perspective.
  • Nynavae, techie extraordinaire and support exorcist. Very personable and forgiving, yet stubborn in a tense situation.
  • Carmanth, fiery leader and offensive exorcist. Her tongue- and whip-lashings would leave anybody breathless.
  • Judith, a solitary spirit. Lives quietly on a post-apocalyptic Earth, and finds a friend in...
  • Heath, communications officer and rookie navigator. Thinks Macbeth is boring.

Enjoy the shortened IGMC 2018 version by the end of the month, with all the exploration taken out in favor of getting most of the story and some choice battles into the judge's hands. How and when it progresses from there will depend on the contest and Degica. :)

Damn. I want to know more about this setting.

Also I'm 100% sold on a sequel to Wine And Roses' gameplay.

Good luck in the IGMC!

My main inspiration has been 2001: A Space Odyssey. That might not entirely make the setting clear other than "the future", but... ;)

It's a jazzed-up WaR system but still fundamentally the same. You'll still equip spells, stock up AP, and find obscene combos. The main additions are BPF (a constantly regenerating shield that takes damage before HP), Aspects (the more any combatant -- ally or enemy -- uses Solar or Lunar abilities, the stronger their attacks are but the weaker they become to the opposite attribute), and Grand Exorcisms ('limit break'-style moves that grow stronger each time you use one in a battle).

and thanks!
I am 100% down for 2001-style scifi exorcist-punk.

Not a sentence I ever anticipated writing, but I'm glad to have done so.
Oh shiz!! Let's go d: The sequel is hereee

kumada i am going to give you points for (big spoilers i guess?):

...figuring out the final line of the game.

and yeah i didn't get to all of the nihil parody because that the truly insensible stuff starts after the holofernes fight. ;V time constraints! that said, "the tragedy of heath" is meant in a very Shakespearean way. he's not OMG I'M AN ORPHAN, but he has a fatal flaw (trust, in so many ways) that undoes him.

that said, the biggest issue is definitely that it's a truncated bit of game. each act has a specific tone of narration that being eased in and out of will help a lot, as will a more natural pacing of story beats. i basically did the first boss and final boss of each act for gameplay variety. ultimately, it's for the judges'/degica's sake. *shrug* contests!

hid the whole convo since it was a LOT of text on the page and kinda spoilery. feel free to peruse it if curious (preferably after having played the game yourself)

A bit late but I finally got around to playing this!

Pretty sick battle system! At first things felt a bit bare, but after beating more enemies and getting more skills, I started to see the wisdom in certain combinations of skills and such. I'm very tempted to steal ideas such as the multiple-turns-per-character thing (as long as AP remained above 0).

I ended up assuming a very 'safe' style of play, revolving around building up AP until I was able to utilise Carmanth's Lunar/Solar damage increasing whip attack - and always making sure the Lunar/Solar Aspects were never above one level. This might not have been the best way to go about things, though, because ultimately the giant frog thingy (or whatever it was that Judith became) was a bit too much (I took down one of the tentacles and thought I was doing fairly well....until the tentacles regenerated) - and after I ran out of the Senescent grenades, I was done for.

I wish there were items that could revive your characters besides Argent's Grand Exorcism - once she got KO'd I was pretty much done.

With regards to the story pieces, tbh I guess I'd echo alot of kumada's thoughts above. I wasn't really aware of what was going on (although I guess I wasn't supposed to)? The quotes in the battle system could have been a nice touch for a game that required less thinking than this one, but I was too absorbed in the battles to really pay attention to them.

Overall great stuff - would definitely play the finished product if you intend on further developing this.
I can't believe I haven't seen this before. I really like the summary/synopsis so totally gonna play it.

YM: :) Glad you liked it.

demo final boss spoiler:
you can't win. judith kills holofernes himself to show off. if you were dying, that's good -- one of the fun things about the battle system imo is that survival missions are possible in a more cerebral form than just "spam potion".

I'm trying to figure out what to do about people not always reading the battle text. I don't feel like anybody said that about W&R, so I'm hoping that in a more extended version where lots of development isn't crammed into each battle, it's easier to process overall. I basically put in the first and final bosses of acts 1-3, and the first of act 4... there'd ideally be like 30-40 minutes between lol.

Thanks nessy!! Hope you like it!
I came back to play this game again after first playing it during IGMC and it's still killer.

Are there any plans to expand/continue it?

I just LP'ed it. Ignoring the fact I sound obnoxiously dumb and gloss over obvious things in the game, I think the main difference between this and W&R is that... The dialogue box is at the top part of the screen. I don't think that was a good change.

Anyway, I ABSOLUTELY loved it though! Hope to have the LP uploaded in a few days (it takes a LOOONG while to render...) I wasn't even gonna LP it but after beating the first fight I thought it would be a waste not to. It always provides useful criticism and experience, and this game is awfully un-buzzy...

hmm. i should probably whip out the last few fights. there's only three more and the script is already finished. but do i wanna

guess i'll watch joser's takes and see if i can't spiff a few things up. not sure i want to make it less linear... the original plan was a bit grandiose and ughhhh. pretty happy working on ko cupid for now
