Niravasi Devlog 1: The Right Cat in the Wrong Place

I'm glad to see that more and more people are becoming interested with this project, despite the game not having a publicly accessible demo at this point. I'm hoping that this will not be the case for long, but there are still a few things I'll need to sort out first before I feel comfortable releasing a build of the demo that will be both fun and beneficial for everyone to get a good idea of what the game will be like. (For example, I'll still need to get the OST sorted out, figure some things out with licensing the game as I plan to make this a commercial release, as well as maybe creating a crowdfunding game). But that's a discussion for another time; one I hope won't be too long. For now, let's talk more about the game itself.

I'm sure one of the first things you noticed when clicking on this page was that horrifying TV monster towering over what looked like a poor little kitty cat. We'll talk more about the monster over the coming weeks, but first let's talk about the Kitty Cat. Or more specifically, who you'll be playing as in Niravasi.

Main Protagonist: Mura the Kition

"Witty Kitty"

This is Mura, the main character of Niravasi and who you'll be playing as throughout your adventure in the titular city. As an inspiring archaeologist, Mura holds a deep fascination with discovering the history of the world before it broke apart, more specifically, the human side of it. Unfortunately, archaeology does not always pay the bills and he finds himself a bit strapped for cash.

Thankfully, he's approached by Willow Eugenics, a large company that specialise in creating scientific and medical breakthroughs specifically for humans. While hesitant to work with humans at first, Mura learns the company wants him to work as part of an exfiltration team at the ruins of Niravasi, which was supposedly lost to time. Combine that with a contract that pays well, Mura finds himself accepting these terms and going to the lost city.

Unfortunately, not all is as it seems and soon Mura will find himself lost in the city of Niravasi, hunted down by creatures horrifying in their design and unspeakable in their nature.

Why him?

So you may be wondering why you're playing as an anthropomorphic cat, exploring the ruins of a lost human city. Now while that's a topic I want players to gradually theorise themselves when playing the game, I can drop a few pointers on some of the philosophies I had when making the character.

The first is that I specifically wanted a non-Human character exploring the ruins of a lost human civilisation. Generally before people explore a place they haven't been to before, they often fantasize how amazing it would be to explore (For example, we tend to look at the Pyramids of Giza in amazement as tourists, momentarily forgetting the fact that those ancient structures and the empires that built them were built on the backs of slave labour).

As a non-human, there will be some cultural concepts the humans have that Mura may not fully understand. Because of this, having him explore the ruins of an ancient city built by a species he doesn't fully understand just makes you feel like an alien. An alien that feels more human than the humans that built a city that feels both natural and alien.

Mura or Veta?

Now there's clearly a big difference between the protagonists of both this game and my previous game, BLANK. In the latter, you played as Veta, a head-strong and often naïve girl born without eyes on a quest to save her world from an ancient evil. Without going into too much spoiler territory for that game, she was the lynchpin of the entire story. Not just as a protagonist, but as an entity interacting with the world of Transech. The world's fate itself was at the mercy of Veta's action.

So now reel back that power fantasy by a couple notches and you have Mura, who is a different character to experience. Mura's not a skilled warrior and doesn't have the support of magical spirits. He's just an archaeologist stuck in a terrible situation. While he may have one or two helping hands in the game, they won't be able to help you escape certain encounters you'll face. That's something Mura himself will have to deal with.

He's not the lynchpin that'll save the world or defeat a great evil. He's just an unfortunate person that's found himself stuck in a terrible situation, with only his skills and wits to help him escape a cursed city.

Anyway, that's all I want to say about Mura for now. There's obviously a lot more to his story than I'm letting on, but where is the fun in spoiling everything? :P

Kind regards,
King Sangos
