I'm here to burn witches and chew berries, and I'm all out of berries!

Welcome to Burn Witches Get Money, or BWGT in short, a little game from the creators of Errevale Fall, a game that is similar for various aspects: in both games we play as hunters of supernatural creatures stranded in a little remote village under the menace of some horrible creature. In this case, a witch.
John Bick and (the silent) Bob the deer are out two protagonists: the first is a huge man with an impressive arsenal that includes a shotgun and a flamethrower, the second is... a real deer (and probably the smartest party member) that clearly favours close combat, even if he can equip different items.
The game starts "in media res" but after the intro a flashback starts the adventure from the beginning: our two friends are looking for the red witch in the Bwgtville (wait, where?). The place is surrounded by dangerous snowy lands where strange creature roam, but our hunters do not fear the unknown, so they start the investigation and look for the witch.
Sorry we can't be gentle, we've a witch to catch and burn!
Not unlike Errevale Fall the game has a morning-afternoon-night cycle that determines the creatures encountered (feral animals and supernatural beings) and the locations of some villagers. It's also possible to complete some secondary activities like hunting and fishing to earn money and parts for crafting useful upgrades, but first it will be necessary to convince the local nun to cooperate.
I won't spoil the fun of discovery, the adventure is pretty much linear (some paths are blocked until you complete some tasks) but very fun. I admit that the notes in the menu tracks all the tasks and their status, but in a case I did not understand what I was supposed to do (the dream essence)... I do not know if I missed some details or if I had to pay the bartender for some hints, anyway I was able to understand and complete the task.
Another "problem" is that you have to be ready for a rough start: few healing items can be used during combat, the crafted upgrades and gear are very useful, as are some extra abilities that are earned after some levels. Ok, leveling up does not take much, still enemies are pretty tough especially if you do not know a good strategy, and this is normal in the beginning, the first day in game is probably necessary to experiment and get some familiarity. And if all fails runa away... if you can!
Bob faces a terrible enemy!
Like Errevale Fall characters can use items, special abilites that cost Stamina, and guns (well only mr. Bick can use them) that need to be reloaded with ammo. And unlike Errevale Fall we have two characters, one will stay in front of the enemies and the other behind him, so positioning is also another important part of combat. Not to mention that each enemy may have some kind of paeticular weakness or resistance to some kind of attacks.
Anyway do you want an example of strategy? Use "Steady hand" to focus and then shoot, the damage will be significantly higher! Another? Bob the deer cannot use a gun but he *can* load the shotgun during his turn for his friend!
Also remember to collect the daily holy water and bullets from the chest of the nun, since strangely there is no way to buy shotgun shells anywhere. Weird.
Anyway this is the game: explore to find hints and informations fighting enemies for loot and experience, getting strong enough to take on bosses that luckily do not respawn. You can also save your game anywhere and if you die... well you don't, you will just wake up at the inn.
Graphically the game is very pretty: maps are made with Rtps and are ok, and so are some characters, others are edits but then there are a lot of custom sprites and battlers, original portraits and monsters. But what I liked a lot were the characters, especially the two protagonists. The story is also pretty good, I like how the tone is less serious than in Errevale Fall, and characters are more humorous but still badass.
Fishing minigame included!
Final Verdict
BWGM is a very stylish game that improves the gameplay of Errevale Fall (I know I mentioned this other game too many times, but the protagonists could technically be interchangeable, despite the different settings and adventures! Not that they are similar, they just would fit and play similarly) without offering lots of new aspects. In any case if that game was good, this is better! The two things that some players may not like are probably the linearity of the story and the initial difficulty of combat, anyway once mastered the system things will be a lot better. Uhm only issue I had was the part immediately before the final confrontation: you fight a lesser boss immediately before a dialogue that may lead to the last bossfight, and unfortunately this means that you may make a mistake, accept and proceed to the boss without saving and/or restocking ammo and consumables. What's worse is that you aren't even healed (thing that instead happens later after a particular combat phase!) so you may have to repeat not one, but two bossfights! Remember to save and take your time to prepare, because bosses are quite challenging, and no one will warn you.
Oh also last combat was odd because it happened to be reduced to 0 hitpoints and still be able to act! Uhm weird, anyway I did not mind that at all eheh!
Anyway there is nothing else to say: game is short but absolutely well thought out, characters are memorable and unique, and I also did not notice typos, game breaking bugs or other issues. This is very good! Challenging and fun!

Thank you for the review once again! The similarities between BWGM and Errevale Fall are mostly because I wanted us to improve on the kind of game Errevale Fall was. When writing for this one I was thinking of making a buddy cop type of story but apparently it ended up having a same-ish structure to Errevale Fall lol.
You mentioned that the confusing stuff was mostly at the start. We did design the game to be harder at the start, then get harder again at the very end, so I'm glad that was the experience you got in the end. About the "Dream Essence", I agree we didn't really put any indication as to where players are supposed to get it but if you have unlocked the Nightmare Vessel intel (by encountering one at night or paying the Innkeeper) then it would say that that enemy type drops Dream Essence. We also hid a lot of stuff in the game (which is why we have the achievements) and that includes a shop for ammunition, which is only unlocked if you do three rabbit side-quests from the Huntsman, then three animal hide side-quests in a row without failing them.
We'll look into the minor issues you mentioned like the last boss. We're always trying to improve our game developing skills so even the small details mean a lot!

But BETTER! Yeah! And I liked that in the past and I liked it now. Well it's clearly a different game, even if still of the category:"monster hunters stranded on a remote village hunt a big bad".

Well that's normal for many other games where there are characters whose abilities need to be mastered to use effective combos and strategies (I can for example say that Rise of the Third Power had the same "problem" for me since you need to learn which characters' abilities work better together). Anyway I just needed to grind a bit and won last combat. Strangely the boss before the final boss was the one who gave me less problems!

Uhm yes, I just do not understand if I just needed to kill him OR I had to use also the dreamtcatcher in combat... that did not seem to do anything apparently. I admit I didn't want to spend money to the innkeeper... also to avoid spoilers!

I know, I know and I found *some*. BUT I was worried that the game had a time limit so I tried and finished it before day 10. Uhm I'll look for them later, I admit I did the mistake of NOT talking to the Huntsman each day (I believed it was necessary to do that only once), despite having a ton of skins and morsels... so I failed doing them in a row! Lol

Well it seems that the hitpoints decrease to zero and then... they grow back again (I was able to act at 0 hitpoints... happened that too!)

Actually, many people might think similar to you. If we release an update with fixes I'll keep in mind to add something to indicate how to get the Dream Essence. A hint is probably better than nothing.

Darn, this bug should've been fixed already. We probably missed something then.

Maybe... the question is... is there a time limit?
Or you just get a bonus for ending defeating the boss in less days?

Well from what I experienced this only happens with the final boss.

There are no alternate endings unfortunately. Pulling off multiple endings like how Errevale Fall was (as simple as the varieties were) would have been too difficult considering the short amount of time we developed BWGM (we were rushing to get the Year of the Deer badge). From that previous game it just seems to be a bit complicated to do in RPG Maker.
You can however get an achievement for beating the final boss only after reaching a certain day (the hint is that it's a Christmas themed game). Aside from that, there are some post-game shenanigans if you beat the final boss again a second time, after talking to a suspicious barrel that pops up when you beat the game the first time. Considering you played some of our other games you might like it :)

Oh yes! So it's not a problem dragging on! I know that there was supposed to be just one ending, my fear was "waste too many days and it's instant Game Over", like a sort of "You failed, everyone dies, thank you for trying" ... lol!
I mean this is the reason why I rushed reaching the boss fight unprepared, but it's only other developers' fault... like Calunio that in Alvorada do Mal created a very similar situation (heroes in a small village threatened by a witch), but where the Witch kills one peasant each day.
Luckily in this game this doesn't happen!
