Sacred Reviews: Caterpillar

Intro

"Caterpillar" is a short horror game developed by pianotm using RPG Maker 2003 that was created for the Seasons of RMN V event. An event where developers were tasked with creating a game that centers around all four of the seasons. Oddly enough this event only saw one other entry by CrazyBabi and Marmalade titled "My Father Sold my Soul for One Million Gold?!". I suppose I could use the event as a connector line and make that game my next review target. At any rate I should probably stay focused on this project which is heavily inspired by a comic written by Greg Potter titled "Bugaboo that appeared in issue 275 of Detective Comics: The House of Mystery. Albeit I wouldn't be surprised if the original story was at least partially inspired by the novella "The Metamorphosis" by Franz Kafka. Though I'll admit finding out more about the comic story has been a bit more difficult than I expected. Even a fansite discussing that particular issue didn't include a synopsis for that story.

Story
Summary

We begin the game as a simple caterpillar that wishes to be human. After eating enough good fruit she builds a chrysalis and by some strange twist of fate she takes over the body of a girl passing by named Marisa. After being checked out by the local doctor she begins living a human life while everyone thinks she has amnesia. She even falls in love with a human, but that love turns sorrow as she rapidly ages to death. After all, she may have the body of a human but she still has the lifespan of a butterfly. Of course, this mean Marisa now has a human lifespan while trapped inside the body of caterpillar. And by some cruel twist of fate both die around the same time. Though, I suppose burning to death in a fire might have been a mercy killing for Marisa. After all, who wants to spend decades as a helpless caterpillar?

Gameplay

On the gameplay front were presented with a simple collection mini-game where were tasked with collecting good food, or healthy flowers, or leaves. Every time we gather up one of the desired objects we gain a green bar, but every time we pick up a bad object the green bar goes down. We also lose a bar every 30 seconds if we don't pick up an object. And since there is a limited amount of spawns that can happen at a given time. We need to dismiss bad objects in order to get good objects to appear. And that's really all there is to the game on the gameplay front.

Outside of the collection mini-game we simply spend our time in cut scenes.

Graphics and Sound

On the graphical and sound front the game is solid in my opinion with some nice edits to the character facesets as well as some original music pieces by pianotm. Though there are a few places where the game does oddly silent as well. As for the tiles most of them are from refmap.

Conclusion

It's a short story broken up with a few mini-games so the player has something to do besides read. And while I personally don't enjoy the story that much considering I'm not a big fan of the horror genre. It's also pretty clear that some time and effort were put into this project by pianotm. And while it'll probably take most people anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes to beat this game based on how fast they can read and how good they are at collecting objects. It's a decent way to spend 5 to 10 minutes. Though, I'll admit it's a bit funny that one of the character says her twice in a row.
