"Everyone has to take a leap of faith sometime. But it is on you to decide from what height."
- Vertalos

-Overview-

Carpe Diem: Episode One is the first episode in a planned trilogy of games telling the story of Skylar and his journey of self discovery, friendship, destiny and growing up. It's a story of a hero held up by the people around him and his internal struggles to accept something more than an average life. Episode One sets the stage for a vast narrative with a deep cast of characters that make up the lore of the world.

Episode One, titled 'The Living Flame' will cover 12 chapters with a total of 25-30 hours of gameplay. If you've played many classic JRPG's, you can expect much of the same in terms of gameplay, however there are a few simple systems in it to help it feel a little more fresh.

What others have said...

Overall, it's a good game for those who like cutscenes and probably a plague to those who prefer non-stop action. You have been warned and recommended.

Good game. I really enjoyed it. Keep up the good work!

I'm anxiously awaiting to play more and this one of the better Rpgmaker games out there and definitely one of the best I've played from Charas.

Looking for testers

Hello everyone,

Been quite a while, I'm looking for people who have time to beta test for bugs, glitches and grammatical errors. If anyone has time is appreciate the help. I also need some recommendations for where I can host the game file to send out.

Thanks to anyone who is available!

Okay, after fighting Skilzardas in the Serpent Cave and getting Trance, how do I escape this floor? I have 25 seconds to act, however rubble blocks my path to the north exit, and I can't leave the way I came in.
You can walk around the rubble you just have to weave your way between the rocks. Don't forget you can move one space into the wall that you cant see. The south walls as opposed to the north walls....if that makes any sense lol

Stuck in that Castle. where do I go?
Well it depends what you've done so far in the castle. If you just gained control of Alkamar, go find Rayne in her room. (East end of castle)

If Rayne is already with you go find her brother in the library. (Second floor at the end of the hall)

Ha! Something I should have known and would have figured out under any other circumstance. Guess I don't do so well under pressure of a 25 second window. Well, thanks for giving me the heads up.
I know I know....don't worry that first cave has been completely redone in the new version of the demo I plan to release.

Okay thanks, still need to get that guard whose sitting on his butt, not doing anything.
Seriously, you really need to go in and fix the horrible game play and balance. You've got an excellent story, but piss poor game play has made me turn this one off. And it's not a matter of you being the designer and knowing the strategy, because there is no strategy. You level up extremely slow, and some of our characters never get a chance to level up at all before being faced with near impossible over-leveled enemies with extremely high HP.

It would be one thing if I just didn't bother to level myself up, but I'm seldom ever given a chance to do so..

Case in point number 1: In the first town is an inn we could stay at... if the enemies surrounding us in the Serpent Cave dropped gold, which they don't, so staying in this inn is useless. Because we can't stay at this inn to restore, I have to be careful of the enemies I fight to level up, because if they start tearing me up I have no way of restoring, except to use Salves, which again I can't buy when enemies don't drop gold. Thus I'm not given much of a chance to level up here, and by the time I'm through I don't have another chance for these characters until chapter 3 when enemies become excrutiatingly tough.

Case in point number 2: After completing chapter 1, I start chapter 2 with a new character. He spends all day solving mysteries in a castle, never gets to level up, then he faces off against a couple of tough bosses. One particular boss throws rage on me half the time, which is similar to beserk, meaning I can't use decent attack skills, as his normal attacks suck, and I can't even restore if my health is depleting. Then I have to face off against another boss, followed by another, followed by... and no chance to restore in between.

Case in point number 3: When the game finally gets going, and new characters join, they are so under leveled, and the enemies are extremely tough. I not only have to try and raise level one characters, but I have to do it against enemies with high HP, agility, and very low EXP.

The other drawback is half the characters that come and go don't appear in the menu, so I can't prepare these characters, heal them, whatever before the next fight. Trance for example. So the only way for meal to heal these characters is to go into battle and then hope I have time to worry about healing these characters while trying to keep up with my attacks.

For the most part, the story is excellent, though it does tend to drag in parts. Most of the writing is flawless, but there are a few misspelled words throughout, nothing too big. However, various times throughout, text gets cut off, as if you forgot to skip to the next line.

Yeah, I figured that was the way to get. However, I still can't. In the house of who is supposed to write the letter, there is a letter on a table. The side where you would normally be able to get it from can't be accessed because there is a chair in front of it. And from the other side, it's too far away!

You can't get it because of the chair. What I had to do was open the game through the actual RM2K3 engine, cut the letter event and move it to the other side of the table I can reach.
Amerkevicius: All the points that you made are valid and true! For one thing I've been going battle to battle fixing things and editing stats, making battles enjoyable and quick. I've also been spicing up boss battles so there's some strategy involved and not just spamming the attack button. Battles were a big issue in my last demo so I'm focusing a lot on that and also going through the whole game thus far to clean up any text issues and other gameplay issues. I'm also speeding up the text (per request of the community) for all dialogue that isn't in a cutscene.

I'm glad you took the time to play the game thus far and hope that the shortcomings haven't kept you from finishing the demo. If you need any help or have any more comments please let me know!

Oh and yes, the chair is blocking the way for the letter I've fixed that on my side but haven't released an updated version of the demo yet.
No, I did finish the demo. Like I said, it is truly an excellent story, although for the life of me I have no idea of what's really going on, so by that I know it's going to be epic. I'm okay with the auto text, not entirely my favorite since there are times I need to break away for wife and daughter, but I usually manage to play it when I know I will have the least distraction.

But game play was sorely hurting here. That's not to say I won't look forward to the completed game once these issues are resolved.

That said, the 1 time heal up for certain save points doesn't quite make sense. Considering that you really don't have much control over when to heal your characters (ie., they go to an inn but usually have to resolve the town's issues before moving on, which generally means some boss enemies), the saves that offer heals don't have to be limited to a one-time deal.

Characters that come and go should be able to appear on the menu for that time, if for nothing else than to strategize and keep them healed between battles.

But most definitely, consider lowering the HP on most by at least 25% and increasing EXP and gold by about that as much.

I know everybody's different. I prefer a game that allows you to level up quick through grinding, but that doesn't mean a game can't be challenging either. And I agree with strategy for the boss fights; you sort of had a couple things going between the first encounter with the Serpent boss and the fight with Beelba and his leader at the same time, requiring you to just defend for a few rounds.

In any case, it seems we've got three main tales going on, between our initial party with Skylar, Ledron and his master, and the royal party. I fear it may end up being much too large for you to handle alone, but we shall see.
