main character doesn't match ANY of the other sprites on the map. :( completely different styles.

Main character must stand out from the crowd. Wouldn't be much of a main character if he didn't.

I don't think that's what he meant. The spriting-style is much different. The main character's sprite has much more vibrant colors and bigger contrast compared to everything else on the screen. The other sprites are toned down when it comes to colors and doesn't have an outline like the other sprite.

just get rid of the bold outline on him and change his skin tone to the other sprites and it'll be fine.
