So, here I was a few days ago, bored outta me skull. Lookin' around the forums, and wanted to see what game I wanted to try, and then I remembered a game I was interested in trying out a while back, but for some odd reason couldn't get it to work, but months later, I was able to, must've been my computer or something, iono.

Anyhoo, I finally got to play through this game, well, part 1 of it, and well, here is my specs of what I liked and disliked.

Hello, it's me, Jaymonius. Reviewer of things (not really.) And today is my review of Part 1 of Everlasting Journey.

-STORY- 5/5
The story begins with a man who is no less greater than your below average man, who wants to get by in life, and drink his woes away, but causes a accident here n' there, sorta like the movie Hangover, but not as chaotic. lol, that should've been the plot, the hero is so shit faced, he causes a mass shit storm around the entire world, and he's trying to re-collect everything that happened, lol.

Anyway, he gets fired from his job and his life is at a all time low, when a not so mysterious girl appears and offers him a job, and the adventure begins, of many wild hijinks, battles, and of course, drinking.

This story made me laugh my arse off, a game like this reminds me so much of the old game Final Fallacy, which was a great game as well, but this game's story and dialouge was a treat, it's been a while since I played a comedy RPG, and the game does a lot of the things right, like making fun of RPG tropes, and possibly my favorite part in the game was when they went through the Mines of Insanity, that was a stroke of genius, never seen something like that before, ha ha.

Although near the end, I was wondering what happened to one of the characters who was with the heroine at the time when I was going through the dungoen, after that... certain scene, I screamed... well, I'm not huge for spoiling the game for those who haven't played, let's just I was just as pissed as Sparrow was, ha ha.

-GAMEPLAY- 3/5
Noooow, this is where things start goin' a little downhill for me, the gameplay I did enjoy, don't get me wrong, lots of interesting puzzles here n' there, and I did enjoy the airship aspects, now if only there were more recruitable NPC's like in Breath of Fire and Suikoden, it'd give me a feel of customization, and that's the one thing I will love about a game, is full on customization. But, if you ARE going to do that for the later half of the game or something, when it's actually complete somewhere in 2017. Then the score may change.

One other feature that was in the game that I thought was nifty was the drinking system, the more drunk you are, you would be able to converse with certain NPC's better than when you're sober, and interesting system, now if there was a dungeon or some kind of status alignment or something that made you drunk as fuck while trying to navigate your way through a dungeon or boss, now there's a adventure for our heroes, lol.

I guess the other thing that drops it down is the combat, yeah, it's rm2k3, nothing a lot of us haven't seen before, right? Well, execute it correctly and it has its perks. The battle system is pretty basic, you do get a analyze command and a steal command, so that's a good thing to have in games, and I was abusing the analyze like no tomorrow during boss fights, ha ha. Good thing two of the characters have that command.

After I started becoming all kickass n' shit, I was mostly auto battling and playing on my DS making the battles go by a little quicker, if I noticed they were running low on MP or HP, Mortion or ethers did the trick. It got kinda repetitive...

However, the bosses were a different story, now those were some fun boss fights, the only one that gave me a hard time was the troll in the Maze of Insanity. Ha ha, I wish at least ONE of the bosses was weak to that instant-kill attack, ha ha.
Other than that, that's all I really got, there's nothing huge that stands out personally in regards to the battle system, just a regular DBS with a couple extra features.

-CHARACTERS- 5/5
Hooooo boy, the characters, there are so many I liked in this game that just made me laugh my hole off. First off, our hero, Sparrow, as explained, he's the hero, but he's more or less a jobless bum, and must have the luck of the fuckin' gods on his side, because he sure gets out of some prickly situations from time to time.

The heroine, not a whole lot is explained about her, although upon first thought when she appeared just gave me the word... tease, and glad to see she delivered on that... *ahem* spoilers there, somewhat.

The rest of the cast were really memorable, except for Val, not as much, she just seemed like Sparrow, and she just doesn't feel as motivated to be with the crew than I think she is, iono. My favorite characters were Sparrow and Philip, and surprisingly... Paul, an interesting plot twist when it comes to him. Well done, just something I'd expect from a comedy RPG like this.

-MUSIC AND SOUND- 3.5/5
Well, here we are, the music and sound department, and here's where it goes up and down, somewhat. Well, it used TONS of music I didn't recognize, which is good, I'm going to guess the majority of the music is original, but you can correct me on that if you want. The only two music tracks I noticed were from Megaman and Bass. (Must be a fan of that game, eh?, I hear ya man, I liked it too.) One thing I noticed though in the game, during the later half when it would switch to the second battle theme, whenever I fought a boss, it'd go back to the first battle theme again. But whenever I go back on the airship, it's go back to the 2nd battle theme again, might wanna fix up that tiny thing, it gets confusing after a while, lol.

The sound effects I've heard time after time, mostly from Chrono Trigger. Other than hearing the sounds from that game, it was pretty average for what I seen.

-OVERALL- 4.5/5
I liked this game a lot, wanted to try it for months, glad I finally got to. I patiently await part 2, in 2017. I noticed you added a lot of new features with DynRPG, can't wait to see those in action later on down the road too, and see how long this game would actually take to beat.

If you are a fan of classic RPG's and like to see tropes make fun of, I highly
recommend this game to anyone, it's simple and hilarious. Try it, you won't be disappointed. Anyhoo, I'm off to get some food, thanks for the fun game.

Note: I'm a huge Pepsi fanatic, so I'm not basing the score on your name btw. :P

PROS:
Amazing Story and Dialouge
Great Atmosphere
Fun Boss fights

CONS:
Battles start to get repetitive.

Final Note:
When this game does get finished, I'll do a playthrough of it on my youtube Channel, I can voice a epic Sparrow, hehe. ;)

Nice review! I'm hoping I can finish part 2 before 2017, haha. DynRPG has really expanded a lot of possibilities, so I'm really excited to be adding features with it that were once impossible. I've never been a huge stats guy, but what always bugged me was that to get any sort of interesting battles going, you need pages and pages of battle events. Steal & Scan were bad enough, so I can't even imagine doing more of those (for my 250+ monster groups). That's why I'm working on battle plugins in DynRPG right now, to hopefully make various "interesting" skills more plug & play.

Things you mentioned that have been fixed or changed since the version you played:
-I got rid of the Auto-battle command. Sorry :( I did this because I hated having to select "Fight" every time. It was another keypress.
-Music is now in mp3 format instead of midi. I noticed a few of the tracks were jarringly loud in NicoB's playthrough (due to pc's with different midi sequencers), so mp3 music is a way of correcting that. I just converted all the midis using soundfonts, so the music itself is more or less the same. Unfortunately this adds 200MB to the game.
-ATB bars are faster (thank god), making battles less boring.
-Customizable settings, like ATB speed, walk/run speed (they can be swapped) & message speed.

I'm waiting for Cherry to come out with a fix for this transparency bug in DynRPG before I release the next version of EJ. That's a big deal for me because I use transparency commands in numerous places. According to one of his posts, it's been fixed in the upcoming DynRPG update.

Yesssssss, this is my favorite part of the review. I think the mere fact that people have connected with these characters is the reason why I'm still working on this game. I definitely have plans for Val in part 2. I did want to squeeze in a sidequest for her in Part 1 at one time, but there were already quite a few of them and I didn't want to take the focus away from finding Paul any more that I had.

Part 2 is well underway though! I have the overall plot outline figured out, and about an hour of gameplay done. I've been hammering out as much as time will allow!
Yeah, I know what you mean though in regards to battle system wise, my battle system has like over 50 pages of stuff in them, and I've had to copy and paste over 300+ enemy parties to fix one or two bugs in the battle system, believe me, it's incredibly jarring.

DynRPG is useful too, been using a lot of the stuff you mentioned as well, like faster ATB, no more Fight, Auto Battle nonsense, and that kickass game clock you put in.

Can't wait to see Part 2 man, great stuff. :D
