Beautifully nasty, but a little lacking

As soon as I read the description of Beautiful Escape: Dungeoneer, I, to be frankly honest, was both intrigued and disturbed by the premise of such a game. As a fan of the SAW series, I found the idea of this, a game where you play the 'villain', to be a very chilling yet fascinating outlook.

As soon as I started playing, I felt that the game needed fleshing out a little more. I understand that it was only made in two weeks-and it is, to be perfectly honest, brilliantly made for such a short time period-but I feel like I couldn't put myself in the place of Verge or sympathise with him due to the lack of background we are given.

I also feel that the plotline was a little rushed, like all of the events happened too quickly and that it would have been nice to have had some more days of just killing, rather than one kill, one major event, one kill, another major event. I would have also liked to have seen more depth in Verge and Daily's strained relationship.

The music was well-chosen and dark, though I feel like the instrumental versions would have been more accurate.

I liked the character artwork and the art for the game, though I feel it would have been a little more impactful if they weren't just rips.

I feel like the premise of this game would have worked better had you been given more time and 'padded it out', so to speak.

Overall, I feel like this game was, at face value, a dark and unpleasant one, but, when playing through it, a fascinating story. The gameplay was, at times, a little dry, however I felt that the beauty of the story overshadowed that factor.

I would love to see a longer version of this, or maybe a remake, because it is a game that I feel deserves to have that extra push just to make it worthy of a full five stars.

Thanks a lot for the review!

Yes, the games has some limitations due to the 2-week timeframe I worked with. But frankly, I don't think I would change much. I believe some games lose, instead of gain from extra length. You might take a look at this essay for a more elaborate view on this, which I completey agree.

Also, most of the art isn't rips. Characters are all made from scratch, as well as some of the maps. Only two maps were directly taken from another source, although somewhat edited.
