The Real Release

So, for real this time: let's talk about the full game.
Due to a couple of factors the game obviously was not in shape for release four months ago. It was a combination of a busy life, lots of bugs, testers having difficulty, and my lack of internet connection. But that's behind us now!
Fortunately, we've been able to exceed the release date (October), and instead are releasing the third and final act of the Master of Souls now!
As I mentioned before in the other blog, the game consists (all three acts in total) of a solid 20-30 hours of gameplay, 50+ quests, and 11 playable characters (not all at the same time). The final act will likely be released sometime today or tomorrow.
One last little tidbit of food for thought, because of all of the recent trouble with the game some of the areas were tested less vigorously than others. This means that essentially at the end of the game, expect a few more bugs. I doubt there will be too many, but if you find a bug PLEASE post it here on this blog. I'll deal with it as soon as I can.

Some final words? I guess I'd like to just thank the community here for all of the support and understanding that I've received over the course of this ridiculously long project. RMN really is a great place and a great community. As always, I hope that you all enjoy the game!

Act III - Release & Testers

It's been a long haul full of a few hiatuses and near computer-crashing disasters, but the third and final act of Master of Souls is complete and ready for testing! I'm gonna put a brief history of what this project started as and what it became for those of you who care :) But everyone else feel free to skip to the bottom for details on the actual release date and testing.

Two years ago I started a project to improve my over all game design abilities, especially mapping. It was going to be a 15 minute project about two brothers going to a family reunion at a church, maybe there was even going to be a boss fight. It grew into so much more. Slowly, as I began developing the game grew a plot demanding of additional characters, and I expanded the game to 4 chapters. Soon enough, that became three enormous acts detailing the somewhat tragic journey of a boy trying to save the world and his brother, all the while following the general arc and storyline of World War II. As usual, I never thought I'd get anywhere in the project, but I quickly finished the first and second acts. And now, after a long hiatus that lasted almost a year, the completion to the story is ready.

What are some new things coming in Act III?

There aren't any huge changes (The game needs to operate using the original scripts in acts I and II, so you won't see many changes there). There are a few major changes though including:

-Traditional open-world style RPG gaming. Yes, for the first time in Master of Souls you can essentially travel the world to go whereever you want whenever! Of course, the storyline still applies and you need to follow it for the most part, but you can travel to almost any location in Rie at any time that you want to.

-Instead of a constantly changing party, Act III introduces five new characters to the cast, rounding out a normal RPG party. Each of these characters is unique in their personality and skillset, making all of them useful in battle. Feel free to experiment with whatever group of characters you like!

-Act III introduces a new minigame that pops up a few times. As the game takes place in a world torn to pieces by a nearly unwinnable war, you take control of the "Dragon Bombers" to free cities under the demons' control! You can seige cities to destroy Defense, Attack, or Health (Supplies) while still making sure the civilian population doesn't drop too low.

- The full game, all three Acts, features about 50 quests. Some of these are main quests, others are side quests for your enjoyment (And rewards). The average playthrough of the main quest and all side quests is about 25 hours of gameplay!

We're aiming to release the full game between early and mid October. In order for this to happen however, I'm going to need a few brave souls willing to test the game. If you're interested, post here saying so or PM me and I'll send you the link in addition to certain areas with huge bug potential :)
As always, thank you all for your support and patience through this extremely long endeavor, and hopefully you'll be pleased with the final result!

Long Time No See

Hey there world :)
You might have noticed (or not)that I disappeared for months on end recently. Either way, due to the craziness of real life I haven't been on here in a long time. To get to the point, I was searching my computer the other day when I found a way to recover 85% of the files I lost when my computer crashed! So, long story short, Master of Souls is back on line! Now that my life has returned to a normal level of crazy, I will be sure to work hard to get back to where I was before the crash, and try to finish the final act of the game relatively soon! I'm sorry for the delay/hiatus, and hope that you can forgive me :)
See you soon RMN

Miscellaneous

Well, this stinks

I'm going to be putting MoS on hiatus. Not for a while, but for a long time. Yes, one day it will be finished, but there are two major problems keeping me from accomplishing this.

1. I'm having surgery at the end of August, and I won't be doing much for a while.

2. My computer didn't crash, but it corrupted the script file inside MoS, and then promptly changed the file type and locked the Act III file, making it impossible to open, which I have to do to fix the problem in the first place.

This was pretty disheartening when I found out that the five to six hours of gameplay that were already in Act III were dead. Normally I would just pick up Act II and start Act III again, but in addition to everything else going on, I need a break. I'm going to start working on a cute, short, and easy rpg to get me back into game making. In my spare time, I'll definitely continue on with MoS.

Thank you all so much for your support! It really means the world to me right now :)

Interview with Aeon

I've decided to start the interviews a little bit early this Act around, there will be seven in total. However, I will be spacing them out much more, so it will be more like one every three or four weeks as opposed to one week. As usual, there are many spoilers ahead, so don't say I didn't warn you!
And without further ado, here is the first interview of Act III - The Ending.

Interview with Aeon
By Bradyrules

Finally, I have managed to escape from that filthy Underworld with my life! After a massive battle with the Ghost King, and a few of our beloved dead, the party managed to secure the Orb of Passage, and return to the Overworld. Of course, I lost them very quickly, as the world is being consumed by war. After traveling through the deepest parts of the Sherwood Forest, on the Northern Pendonian Isle, I finally caught up with the party in the crumbling world capital of Pendonia. Aeon was sitting out over the water, alone, pondering something or other when I approached him.

Bradyrules: Hey Aeon, long time no see?

Aeon: Oh, just great. You.

Bradyrules: Sorry, it's my job to follow you around.

Aeon: Er, alright.

Bradyrules: So, Aeon. What exactly is going on here, in the Overworld?

Aeon: I'm not really sure, I know that Thrusen has resurrected some demon army of Eivion's and is waging a war against humanity, but other than that I'm lost.

Bradyrules: I see, is he winning this war of his?

Aeon: By a long shot. Eastern Pendonia here is the only major city that isn't under his control.

Bradyrules: Do you have a plan to recapture the capitals of the world and defeat Thrusen once and for all?

Aeon: Well, our overall plan is to do just as you said and recapture every continent one by one until Thrusen is left with nothing. Then we'll capture him. But I've no idea how we're going to accomplish such a task. General Taor of the Pendonian Army spoke of a plan to use dragon bombing raids against Western Pendonia, and he wants my party to capture the dragons. I'm not sure if we should or not, it could be very dangerous.

Bradyrules: I see, so that's why you're up here thinking.

Aeon: Well... that's not the only reason. I'm still thinking about what the Ghost King said, about Pete being alive.

Bradyrules: Ah, well we're almost out of time Aeon. Is there anything else you'd like to say to our viewers.

Aeon: If I were you, I'd run. Someplace far away from this war.

And on that pleasent note, we end this weeks interview. The way it stands now, Eastern Pendonia is the only city left that Thrusen hasn't captured. And if he captures Pendonia in its entirety, then he can, and will, defeat the gods once and for all. In a few weeks we will hope to catch up with Lidya, the party's archer. Hopefully by then the tide of this war will have turned for the better. One can only hope...

Act II - Interview with Christina / Act II release date!

Interview with Christina

By Bradyrules

After having given the party a break, I find them resting in the haunted caverns, close to the bridge spanning the infamous Cliffs of Loss. I wonder what brought them here. Christina is sitting by herself, guarding the entrance to the party’s campsite when I approach.

As usual, SPOILERS ahead...

Bradyrules: Hey Christina, long time no see. Can I have a moment?

Christina: You followed us into the underworld?

Bradyrules: Of course! It is my job as a reporter to follow the story wherever it goes, even here.

Christina: How did you get down here? Weren’t you in Tar’ Jahri when it collapsed?

Bradyrules: Well, er… no. You see, I had been listening in on the conversation when Thrusen went all… evil, and I kind of got sucked up with you guys!

Christina: I see.

Bradyrules: Speaking of that day, what do you think about what happened? Any thoughts about Pete or Thrusen?

Christina: Pete was such a sweet little boy, he didn’t deserve to go like that. And Thrusen is a big jerk, I can’t wait to get back and personally wipe him off the face of Rie!

Bradyrules: But you can only heal, can’t you?

Christina: I’ve picked up a few new tricks since we got here.

Bradyrules: Note to self, do NOT upset Christina. Have any of the others grown on you as you’ve been trapped down here?

Christina: Well, Daniel isn’t particularly annoying. He could spend a little less time reciting “The Tales of Daniel Chapers The Great” but other than that, he’s fine. Lidya is still as irritating as ever. She never shuts up about anything, especially Daniel.

Bradyrules: What about Aeon?

Christina: Aeon? He’s ok I guess. I feel terrible for him, about his brother and all, but I’m getting a little worried about this new intense “I Must Protect Everyone” phase he’s going through. He’s starting to sound a little like Daniel.

Bradyrules: So, are you and Aeon a thing yet?

Christina gives me a look like she wants to rip me apart mercilessly and throw me over the edge of the cliff. So much for not getting on her bad side. I decide to run, for now, and hopefully follow the party from a safe distance as they journey into the Overworld.

Now, as you may have noticed from the title of the blog, my testers are almost finished with the Act, and I am almost finished plugging in their changes. At the latest, we expect Act II to be released and available on the site no later than Saturday, April 2nd.
Enjoy the game folks!

Act II - Interview with Theo

Interview with Theo

By Bradyrules

We have left our original party alone for a little while, and headed out to the city of Wydae where the man they are seeking lives. We found him in a tavern, drinking human blood.

Bradyrules: Er, hello. Are you Theo?

Theo: I suppose so.

Bradyrules: Great, could I have a second? I have some questions to ask you.

Theo: Of course… but before we start, what is with that hunk of garlic around your neck?

Bradyrules: I, er, was afraid!. I saw you drinking blood!

Theo: Ha! Don't worry, I'm no vampire. Blood is the only available drink at this tavern, that's all.

Bradyrules: Oh, thank the Gods! Alright, now straight to our interview. What exactly are you? If you're not a vampire, are you a demon? A werewolf? A skeleton?

Theo: I'm a half-demon you could say. I was once human, but now I've let enough of the underworld seep into me that I've become somewhat demonic.

Bradyrules: That must have taken a long time! How old are you?

Theo: 348 and a half.

Bradyrules: Whoa! How are you alive?

Theo: Things work differently down here. There is no sense of time really, just coming and going. A year down here is close to 40 or 50 human years. Or at least, that's how I estimate it.

Bradyrules: Alright, what exactly do you do? Do you have any special abilities?

Theo: I'm a necromancer, a wielder of death. I can control life and death in my enemies, bring about plagues and curses of course, I'm not powerful enough to cause people to drop dead, yet.

Bradyrules: Fascinating, anything else?

Theo: My powers become stronger and stronger the more I use them. They may become able to hit more enemies, or maybe just deal more damage. Some of them have many such upgrades, but others have just one or two.

Bradyrules: Well Theo, we're running out of time. Is there anything you would like to tell us, about how you plan to get the party out of the underworld?

Theo: Well, I can't just tell anyone that, can I!

At this, Theo gets up and walks out of the tavern. I decide it's time for a quick exit myself, after seeing those hungry vampires in the corner eying my neck. Next time, I'll backtrack a while and visit the party again to have our last interview with Miss Christina.

Act II - Interview with Lidya

Interview with Lidya Garnell
By Bradyrules
SPOILERS AHEAD!!!
I left our party alone for a little while after our last interview, to get themselves back together. Now, I’ve finally caught up with them again in the small village of Deilrin, where Lidya is arguing with a guard and two children. What a surprise.

Bradyrules: Hey Lidya.

Lidya: Oh Gods! Not you again!

Bradyrules: I’m glad to see you too. Can I have a minute?

Lidya: No. This time, I’m going to finish my argument first.

Bradyrules: Are you sure? What are you even arguing about?

Lidya: This stupid guard won’t let us into the forest; he says it’s too dangerous. And these children agree with him! They’ve been following us around all day warning us of “them”. Whatever that is.

Bradyrules: I see, I see. What do you think about Pete and the whole Thrusen issue?

Lidya: Look, I’m losing my patience. The past is behind us. Sure, we’ll have to return and defeat Thrusen, but we have to get over Pete. And by “we” I mean Aeon.

Bradyrules: Aren’t you nice.

Lidya: He has been driving me crazy with all that crying! He finally stopped a few days back, but now he just mopes around all day!

Bradyrules: What about Daniel and Christina? Have they been as annoying lately?

Lidya: Christina is always annoying. She thinks her little healing spells are so important, you know what I say? If you can’t fight, leave.

Bradyrules: Catchy saying, what of Daniel though?

Lidya: Daniel is a completely different story! He’s so strong and powerful! No monster in this dark, smelly underworld could even dream of hurting him.

Bradyrules: I’m happy that you think your boyfriend is immortal.

Lidya: HE IS NOT MY BOYFRIEND.

Lidya reaches for an arrow and her bow, I start running. Three unproductive interviews down, only two more left. I think we’ll try going to our new party member next, to give Lidya a little break. Who knows what goes on in her mind…

Just FYI, I'm almost done with the last Goodie Cave in Act II, and then it will be up for testing. I'm still looking for testers, if anyone wants to help, and I'm sorry for the late start, I had an incredibly busy week.

Act II - Interview with Daniel

Interview with Daniel Chapers

By Bradyrules

As before, be careful: This interview contains spoilers...

We find Daniel talking with Lidya and Aeon, a little ways down from our last interview. They seem very worried about something or other, and there appears to have been a struggle in the cave next to them.

Bradyrules: Excuse me Daniel, could we borrow you for a moment?

Daniel: Oh, of course! Say, you look oddly familiar…

Bradyrules: I should! I’m the talented reporter who has been following your journey!

Daniel: Of course, of course! Here, take this autograph for your viewers. What can I do for you.

Bradyrules: Well, I was just wondering if I could have your opinion on this whole mess. What do you think about what happened back in Tar’ Jahri?

Daniel: All those innocent people…. No one in Tar’ Jahri deserved to die that day, and yet Thrusen killed them all. If I had just done my duty, I could have stopped him! But, he was far too powerful…

Bradyrules: What about Pete?

Daniel: I feel terrible that Pete is dead, he was a good lad, I should have been able to protect him…

Bradyrules: Anything else? All that you feel is guilt that you couldn’t protect him?

Daniel: Well, I suppose that is all I feel. Aeon has suffered greatly from this, but overall it made him a powerful warrior. I am honored to fight by his side.

Bradyrules: Right…. So, do you think anything like this will happen again.

Daniel: Absolutely not! We are all more powerful now, and I am sure that Thrusen will never get close enough to kill anyone ever again.

That about wraps up this interview, and as usual the only thing I get is an autographed piece of parchment. Maybe we’ll have better luck with the others, until then stay tuned.

Another important anouncement:

Act II is complete!

We are currently fixing a few design flaws, finishing the final battle and the star/transition Act/Credits screen, and then we will submit the demo for testing.

So... anyone out there feel like testing? I already have three testers: my wonderful codevelopers domrob and bradyrules, and eosdragon.

Any one else want to test? I'm not going to take more than six total, so if anyone else wants to be added either send me a PM, or post in this blog. I only ask that you have completed Act I, or are close to completing it, because the game will go right from the end of Act I into Act II. An important note involving transferring your save file:

To play Act II, and not have to start from the beginning of Act I you will need to copy your save file from the Act I folder, and paste it into the newly downloaded Act II folder.

We'll have a trailer up soon! Until then, may the F=MA be with you all!
