Sacred Reviews: Fire Emblem 6 - TILoRtQatQfP

Intro

"Fire Emblem 6 - The Insatiable Legend of Roy the Conqueror and the Quest for Peace" or simply "Fire Emblem 6 - TILoRtQatQfP" for short was the winner of the RMN's 4th Birtyhday 4-hour the Cake is not a Lie! event. This event was intended to celebrate the sites fourth birthday and was centered around the theme of sequels that shouldn't be made, but we'll make them anyway. In the case of this game by Dyhalto we were given a very horrible sequel to "Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade". A sequel that is meant to be comedic by making some of the characters amazingly dumb while having minions that point out the bloody obvious.

And he tries to ramp up the comedic flavor by going entirely out of character with the character's. So if your a big fan of "Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade" and can't stand the thought of someone twisting the character's for the sake of comedy. I'd advise giving this game a wide berth.

Story

The game starts out by Roy being invaded by one of his neighbors in a bid to expand his territory. A neighbor so clever that he makes Philip from "Overlord" look like a simpleton in comparison. I never thought I'd see the day a person craftier than Philip would emerge. Of course, the true enemy isn't our neighbor but a force in the North whose name goes unmentioned because the invading lord being a villain doesn't get a long drawn out death scene that a hero would receive and thus keels over before he can finish his statement.

Oh well, I guess we'll just have to invade and conquer every territory to the North of our own until we find them. After all, who cares about starting a world war when you can readily slaughter everyone with ease.

Gameplay

The game features the standard combat system of Sim RPG Maker 95 which means you can expect pretty standard turn-based tactical battles in this game. Albeit a lot of the mooks in this game are highly unresponsive. So much so that you can sometimes just have a single unit running around crushing them with ease.

In fact, it's so easy to crush just about everyone with Marcus that everyone else feels pretty useless. And I'm not sure if the enemies lack of a response is because they can't damage Marcus because he's defense is too high or because Dyhalto didn't set them up to respond to incoming enemy attacks and they'll sit their regardless of who approaches them. I suppose I could replay the game in order to test this, but it's getting late and I have too much other stuff to work on to dump 20 minutes into testing this at the moment.

And it probably would have been a good idea to give the first boss a ranged weapon since you can actually snipe him to death with archers as well as the ballista in a few turns. At least if the goddess of RNG decides to shine upon you when it comes to the ballista bolts.

Graphics

I'll admit I'm not that familiar with the RTP for Sim RPG Maker 95, but I'm guessing that Dyhalto most likely ripped a lot of the sprites from "Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade" for this project. I know the title screen is just a clean and flipped image of the box art for "Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade".

Sound

I'd say the sound aspect of the game was just alright. It really didn't stand out in a way that was particularly positive or negative in my opinion.

Conclusion

I'll admit I find myself rather mixed on this one. On one hand the game is too easy for battles in this game to feel all that strategic since it's really easy to out slug your enemies with a single unit. On the other hand this was an entry in a non-serious contest, so I really can't hold that against this game. On the other hand the non serious nature of this project might just turn some people off. After all, I expect a SRPG to challenge my abilities as a commander and tactician to a certain extent. At the same time I get really annoyed when entries for non-serious contests takes themselves too seriously as well. After all, were trying to have some fun here. At the same time the sluggish nature of this game kind of hinders the fun factor for me, but I'll admit it was my own choice to simply rely on Marcus to crush my enemies one at a time for the most part. As such, I really can't hold that against this game either since I could of taken a more proactive approach with my entire squad.

Thanks for the review. Yeah, I whipped this up in 4 hours so it's understandably terrible. I was also still learning the engine.

The reason the enemies in the first map didn't attack was because Marcus was the only one in their range at any time, and enemies don't attack if they're going to do 0 damage. If you moved the rest of the posse forward, it would've been slightly more of a slugfest.
And for what it's worth, I learned from the Marcus-in-a-short-game experience and removed him in the quasi-sequel Legend of the Mystical Deer.
Yeah, I finally sat down and submitted a review for that game. So that will probably be available next Tuesday. At least Tuesdays tend to be the day the reviews get approved.
