This page is for discussion of the technical side of content creation. If you have a technical issue or question with regards to a character or story you are creating, talk about it here.
(The old Custom Content thread can be found here)

Helpful things:

--> Medium build girl, the .psd that was used to create the built-in characters, is available with layer names in English.

--> Kudos to SparkleFox for finding us a male tachie generator, authored by "彩 雅介" (Aya Mayabaikai?)! This one is put together as a program, but has PSD files with layer-names in Japanese. No "fan-translation" available at this time.

--> You can use any of these images for making new custom characters.

--> Notepad++ with syntax highlighting for Heartache 101 can be a big help with story creation. To set it up, go to the View menu and set User Defined Language to HeartAche. Then close View, go to the Language menu and select HeartAche. (If you already have Notepad++, here's userDefineLang.xml by itself)

--> Mr. Help File has, regrettably, forgotten to mention certain locations! They are as follows:
Beach (sunset), Grounds (sunset), Roof (sunset), Bedroom (Morning), Downtown, Studio Room.
Note that these locations must be specified via a PLACE command. To the best of my (ie: Marrend's) knowledge, they cannot be obtained via the generic "School" or "City" code.

I've got a list (underneath the hide-tag), but, I seem to recall Dozen have a more comprehensive list? I can't remember, since it was a while ago when we spoke of this last.

Clear Mode cannot seem to access events after the initial INTRODUCE event. Making the ability to play Masako or Uchioniko playable in Clear Mode a moot point. Fixed?

In Story Mode, if you play a STORY with a PICTURE command, it says unless there there is an event that clears the picture (PICTURE = None).

Custom mental notes?

Mute's command ideas:

"SHOW CLOSER"
Increases the size of the currently shown tachie to give off the impression of it being closer.

"SHOW FURTHER"
Decreases the size of the currently shown tachie to give off the impression of it being further away.

"SHOW DOWN"
Moves most of the currently shown tachie below the window's boundaries to give off the impression of it being on the ground.

At the end of the scene this is called in, the game will skip right to the City phase (if you put afternoon) or the phone call screen (if you choose evening).

"SKIP X DAYS"
Once called, X amount of days will be added. Like, if it's the 70th day, and "SKIP 3 DAYS" is called, it will become the 73rd day.

"BEFORE SCHOOL"
Instead of events in the school morning being restricted to the Front A location, any event with this command will start before school.

"AFTER SCHOOL"
Instead of events right after school being restricted to the Front B location, any event with this command will start after school.

"TIME PASS"
Upon being called, the transition animation is used. Currently, you're able to just use a JUMP X command, keep the location the same and get the same effect, but this would be a lot more convenient.

"ERASE TEXTBOX X"
Upon being called, the textbox is removed for X seconds. To give off a dramatic effect and show the background without anything in the way.

"FREEZE TEXTBOX X"
Once called, the textbox can't be advanced for X seconds. Forces a player to absorb the image, tachie, music or text they're reading. Dramatic effect n' all. BasedMG wanted something like this.

"CLOSE/OPEN EYES"
Once called, the screen slowly goes black. Opening eyes will slowly return the screen to normal. Right now, JUMPing to a story or branch with PLACE = None works, but that has a weird animation for what is happening and makes it seem like your player goes to the void when he closes his eyes.

"ADD (Gift name, bonus orb or token)"
At the end of the scene in which this is called, the player gets X gift, X amount of bonus orbs and X amount of tokens. Yes, this is a weird one, but definitely possible.

"TEXT COLOR = (Color name or RGB value, maybe)"
Changes text color of current speaker to whatever color is specified.

"FOCUS = (Attribute)"
Changes the current speaker's focus attribute during the game. dewelar wanted something like this.

Uchioniko's zip file on the official site has been removed. I'm thinking you might have deleted it because there was an update (The one with the "Masako events", I suspect), and neither of us ever bothered to re-upload it. GO, HEARTACHE SUPPORT STAFF!

There's been some hammering out of specifics of the game's location. Heavens forbid that I have it wrong, but, they start at about this post and contiune until this post. It might not hurt to look a post or three in either direction. Anyway, the supposition is that this game occurs in Iwate or Akita prefecture. Nothing more specific was mentioned, but, having this kind of information, if you think is legit, might be nice to have on the gamepage, or as a Mr. Help File thing rather than searching slogging through the custom content threads.
Thanks for that.
So there were only those two bugs?? If anyone else has bugs to report, now's a great time!

As for the feature requests...not that those are bad, but I'm gonna only implement one or two new features. You guys should be finishing your stories with the features there already are ;)

I deliberately did not give the game a specific location, but you can decide on an unofficial location if you want to. You can even use the website poll for that purpose if you want.
While I was going thru the prologue again, I noticed a minor 'who's talking here?' moment that I hadn't caught. Since you are asking for things to fix, I thought I'd let you know.

The line, toward the end of the first scene:
<player> (blue player words)
Oh. Keika's sending me a message on my phone... Probably to ask to meet me half-way. If I don't it'll be another 10 minutes.

Should be:
Miki (red-brown girl words)
Oh. Keika's sending me a message on my phone... Probably to ask to meet me half-way. If I don't it'll be another 10 minutes.

^ Thanks for that.
The game has been updated!
New to version 2.5 is the ZOOM command which displays tachie for the active speaker close up per Mute's suggestion.

Also, a character's focus attribute can be permanently changed through the FOCUS command per dewelar's suggestion. Example:
ID = 78
FOCUS LOOKS

If you are going to be using a new feature, I recommend noting that v2.5 is required when you make the content available for download.

Clean Mode is also functional again! At least as far as I can tell. I should put Emiko back into action (so to speak) to check it out some more. With that all in mind...

Let's see some custom contents, peoples!
I am working on a character to submit, to whom shall I request a character ID number? Any available number is fine. Character's name, Waifu Mai.

Also, is there an upper limit to the BGM length? I noticed when I put a longer MP3 (longer than 3 minutes) in place of another, the longer MP3 did not play in-game, but when I shortened it down to under 2 minutes it played just fine. I noticed this when messing around with 21 Ways tracks, the only one tested.

You wanna reserve an ID? Dozen is our custom content overseer, and has the final say in who goes where. Though, I've taken a few IDs, and have not had any complaints from him. Yet.

Anywho, before I would accept it, how about providing a bit of information about this character, outside of her name? You don't have to tell us everything, but, a sample tachie, and some kind of description of her main personality traits would be nice.

Saying that, I am vaguely aware of what a "waifu" is, and I could attempt to imagine how relevant that concept is in her story, but, it's merely a guess.

As for a BGM length, I don't think there is supposed to be a hard limit? I'll go searching through my files again to see what the longest track I've used was.

*Edit: Emiko's got "Day (Fionnhodgson)", which is 4 minutes, 44 seconds, with a runner-up in Joruri's content, "Ozarka is the Devil (MattJohnson817)", which is 4 minutes, 6 seconds.

I apologize, it's true you would need some more info, because I, too, would need some as well.

Mai Waifu is the name given to an experimental line of android human companions built by the same scientist who developed the janitor robot. He is secretly sending this Mai out on her own to see if she can function by herself in a controlled public setting like a school. She is programmed to function like any schoolgirl in such a setting, and interact normally and pleasantly with teachers and students. The player first sees 'her' arrive at school and is the first person she meets, aside from her 'father', the scientist, who is occasionally observed watching her through binoculars (and later, while on dates). Much like the janitor robot, Mai does occasionally malfunction, and exhibits things from wild mood swings to inactivity. One could say Mai is experiencing humanity through the malfunctions...
The player is the only person to know his new friend isn't human. Due to her friendly disposition toward the player, Miki and Keika might see him winning the bet having found a girlfriend in the pretty new exchange student. However the player would know this is in clear violation of the 'Keika Addendum', even if everyone else thinks the new girl is strange.
I think there is much potential for comedy here, a good practice for me as I want to start writing hard scifi comedy. The call-back (or foreshadowing) of the the scientist I like, too, and if this works I might write the Chocolate Lady's Daughter or some other character tying into some of the extra characters. "Android human companion" might lead some to think "sex robot", and I do NOT want that to be the case, even if the name might imply something akin to that. In actuality, I stole the name from another game, and would be open to suggestion as to another, more appropriate name.

And the tachie example...

Acceptable enough for me. I'll slide her in at #59 for now.

If you "stole" the name from another game, I... think that would be okay? I mean, I don't know the reference, but, references are made all the time (even if they are only in the comments). Such as routes made by this guy.
Well, "Mai Waifu" is the Japanese cognate of "my wife", and is often used by fanboys/otaku to refer to their favorite VN/anime/manga/hentai/whatever character. It's often seen as a bit creepy, and can have sexual overtones. I would strongly advise against using that as a character name, robot or no.

I'm cool with changing it. I wasn't married to the name... (-5 for pun usage.)

Any suggestions, anyone? Something along the lines of something technical I'm thinking... I'm pretty bad at Japanese naming, so I appreciate the help.

*laughs* I'm thinking of the all-ages nature of the game. If it weren't for that, I'd have no problem with the name either. Flowerthief would be the one to make the final call on its appropriateness.

Well, if you want to stick with allusion to something else, you could always call her Ping.
On a completely different topic...

I've been doing some playthroughs with Noriko, trying to see where things might be improved, and also going through some of the custom content that I haven't seen (Why in blazes does Joruri want to block me from raising my attributes? Also, I have discovered that it's a bit difficult for me to go digging for the stuff that needs playtesting, so if anyone wants to point me to where I can download such files I would be grateful...). I know we just had an update to the game, but there was something I'd noted ages ago that probably got lost in the shuffle. Specifically, I'd like there to be a way to have a story file look for other custom content and not crash the program if it doesn't find it. Since I have some places within Noriko's file that refer to Masako (both are in the debate club), and I would like to be able to have some custom dialogue that is dependent on Masako having been introduced, just without forcing the player to have Masako installed in order to use Noriko.

I realize this is probably not possible due to the vagaries of custom content, but maybe there's some way around it? The only thing I can think of at this time is to have the custom code commented out, and someone who wants to see it would have to manually edit Noriko's story file to remove the hashes, but that would kind of spoil the fun :( .

Have a separate download that gives you a copy of noriko_story.txt with custom content, telling users to replace the 'clean' copy with the edited copy if they want to use custom content.

Surely moving some files into a folder isn't an issue, is it?

*smacks self in forehead* Yeah, separate downloads...I should have thought of that myself. Thanks for that, the list of playtesting stuff, and making me feel like an idiot all in one go :) .
So, my wiki-walking for an appropriate replacement name gave me this:

ID 59 = Kinzoku Shiritori

Kinzoku being the family name, as she is made of inorganic components and not a human, and Shiritori is a simple children's word game that mimics the input and output of computer programming. An appropriate nickname would be 'Shiri', dangerously close to 'Siri'.

What do you think, sirs?

Look, if she's supposed to 'function normally in society' and appear to everyone except the player as a normal girl, shouldn't her name be normal as well? I dunno about you, but a name like Metal Word Chain is not going to fool anyone.

I kind of agree but kind of don't too xD
Metal wordchain, don't necessary means that she's made of metal, it can have a whole array of figurative meanings that will keep people lost in thought for a while.
But... My first impression is that she will be the cute type, and a metal meaning name would fit more to someone... hard (-5pts for me too x3) like Mayu or Eliza.
Ps. Kinzoku can also mean "Continuous service"

Many thanks. I was not aware of the weight of literal interpretations of names and will give this, and the project as a whole, some more thought. With both naming suggestions so far I was attempting to achieve a more classic sci-fi quality with it, with a twist of irony, and hopefully humor. 'Mai Waifu' was alluding to the companion side of her line, (and is officially scrapped) while still maintaining a somewhat normal name. 'Shiritori Kinzoku' is a more veiled attempt at this. Her name would be the unreleased product, with her 'parents' the corporation behind her development.

We're from a generation of bad naming, with knowing hippie parents naming their kids 'Rivers', 'Leaves', 'Soda' and 'Lolli' (both last name Popp, btw). Lest we forget "North West". These are all Western examples, of course. I have no Asian examples, their may be a reason to that, due to the Japanese Ministry of Justice's rules on appropriate use of names. So...yeah. Instant culture shock.
