This page is for discussion of the technical side of content creation. If you have a technical issue or question with regards to a character or story you are creating, talk about it here.
(The old Custom Content thread can be found here)

Helpful things:

--> Medium build girl, the .psd that was used to create the built-in characters, is available with layer names in English.

--> Kudos to SparkleFox for finding us a male tachie generator, authored by "彩 雅介" (Aya Mayabaikai?)! This one is put together as a program, but has PSD files with layer-names in Japanese. No "fan-translation" available at this time.

--> You can use any of these images for making new custom characters.

--> Notepad++ with syntax highlighting for Heartache 101 can be a big help with story creation. To set it up, go to the View menu and set User Defined Language to HeartAche. Then close View, go to the Language menu and select HeartAche. (If you already have Notepad++, here's userDefineLang.xml by itself)

--> Mr. Help File has, regrettably, forgotten to mention certain locations! They are as follows:
Beach (sunset), Grounds (sunset), Roof (sunset), Bedroom (Morning), Downtown, Studio Room.
Note that these locations must be specified via a PLACE command. To the best of my (ie: Marrend's) knowledge, they cannot be obtained via the generic "School" or "City" code.

Specifically, I'd like there to be a way to have a story file look for other custom content and not crash the program if it doesn't find it.

Was there not warning that some content would not be playable, and let you play anyway? Has this feature been removed?

author=dewelar
Since I have some places within Noriko's file that refer to Masako (both are in the debate club), and I would like to be able to have some custom dialogue that is dependent on Masako having been introduced, just without forcing the player to have Masako installed in order to use Noriko.

Uhhhhh, you could put Masako's tachie, profile, and music into Noriko's directory structure, and not include her story? However, this is not a move I actually support. What I would support is having people require Masako to be installed, and let them decide to disable her story (or not) through the Custom Content option in the main menu.

I am sorta assuming that Masako would have an alternate INTRODUCE event within Noriko's story in the case that her story is disabled this way.

Not sure how it worked before, but for me it just says that masako_story.txt wasn't found, and the game failed to start.

The line of code is simply:

A: 3 DONE IN masako_story.txt

...where BRANCH A contains the custom dialogue only, leading to a JUMP to where the two dialogues converge. It would happen twice.

I'm not sure exactly how this would work. The current Noriko story file just has Masako mentioned by name, and if the player doesn't have Masako installed that part would not change, so there should be no need for an actual INTRODUCE event.

I guess what I wanted was for the Masako content to be kind of an "easter egg", and giving the player any kind of clue that he needs Masako installed would spoil it. This was actually motivated by what happens in my current file when the player does have Masako installed. I hadn't run a full playthrough with both Noriko and Masako until yesterday, and when I did I realized how awkward it is when the player is being tutored by Masako, and when Noriko talks about her his inner thoughts are along the lines of "Oh, yeah, Masako, I've vaguely heard about her." It was just jarring. It would just be unfortunate if my only choices were to either spoil the surprise or to eliminate it altogether.

While I'm here, I found a minor issue in the prologue. During the scene where <player> sees Keiko and Akari in the hall, there's a line of his thoughts that reads "(Oh what do I care)" with no punctuation at all. There should at least be a question mark at the end, and probably a comma after "Oh". I've seen a few others, but haven't started a list yet, and was wondering if this was the place to put them, or maybe just submit them to Dozen for the request list. Also, what do I do if I find stuff like this in the finished custom content from the folks who aren't around anymore (e.g., there are quite a number of spelling/grammar issues with Yuu's story)?

ETA: Have now started making a list for the main game :) .

Eliza's 0.9 version have a major bug, I released a fix to it a few posts later, but the that download won't work correctly without it. :p
You can download the pre-release version that I've sent to Render here ^^

Thanks! Have downloaded the linked file along with the other two for playtesting, of which I will hopefully do some tonight. Megumi wouldn't load due to an error in the coding (Story 17 has PLACE = Class A instead of Classroom A), which I have now fixed on my copy.

ETA: Ah, I see this was pointed out on the Artistic board. Bad form, Marrend people.

I know the warning occurs if it's a CONDITION line in the header. I can't say if I've ever run across the warning when it's a branch condition. I might try to run Uchioniko, minus Izumi's story file, to see if I get the same error.

With respect to the "easter egg", does Masako's tachie show up on the same screen as Noriko's? If not, I'd be okay if you put in Masako's tachie into Noriko's OTHER slots (that's what ye olde Emiko did, in a kinda-sorta way), and do it that way. Otherwise, I'm thinking that including Masako's non-story content with Noriko could still work for your purpose.

*Edit: I got two error messages and a warning. One error message mentioned that Ruri needed "izumi_story.txt" to exist for STORY 7. Sure enough...

STORY 7
CONDITION = 6 DONE
CONDITION = 9 DONE IN Uchioniko/mayu_story.txt OR 11 DONE IN Uchioniko/shoko_story.txt OR 9 DONE IN Uchioniko/izumi_story.txt
A: 9 DONE IN Uchioniko/mayu_story.txt
B: 11 DONE IN Uchioniko/shoko_story.txt
C: 9 DONE IN Uchioniko/izumi_story.txt

...both the header and branch C wants it to exist. The header shouldn't be a problem (I think?), but, apparently, the branch is. Also, I got an error message that looked like...

Script 'Read stories' line 1266: NameError occured.

undefined local variable or method 'phrases' for #<File_Reads:0x8e08388>

...that.

I wasn't necessarily intending to display Masako's tachie. All I'm trying to do is, when Noriko brings up Masako, have <player>'s comments be different depending on whether or not he's actually met Masako.

Meanwhile, I've been trying to send a PM to Kevincalanor with the things I've discovered during my playtesting of the WolfyPack for the past couple of hours, but apparently that part of the RMN system is down. I'm going to post it here instead. It's long, and mostly spelling/grammar stuff, so I'm putting it behind the button:

Is everyone bumping into the player supposed to be a joke? If so, that's kind of cool.

Now, here are some fixes:

STORY 1

"Every one of you will have to work"

"Exactly the reaction I've expected from you."
- should be -
"Exactly the reaction I expected from you."

BRANCH A
"Yes. Raffle, you aren't"
- should be -
"Yes, raffle. That way, you aren't"

"Kazukiho, you will work with Nakagima."
Is that Miki? Her last name is spelled "Nakajima", with a "j"

"she didn't raised her hand"
- should be -
"she didn't raise her hand"

"I could see a draw in her notebook"
- should be -
"I could see a drawing in her notebook"

BRANCH B
"to be sneaky on the girls"
- should be -
"to be sneaky with the girls" (I think that's what you mean here)

"A needed evil I suppose."
- should be -
"A necessary evil, I suppose."

"drooling with the sight of her"
- should be -
"drooling at the sight of her"

"It is exactly the true."
- should be -
"It is exactly the truth."
(or, alternately, "It is exactly true.")

STORY 2
"I wonder if mine luck can get any worse."
- should be -
"I wonder if my luck can get any worse."

STORY 3
(We worked for just half-hour until she stopped.)
- should be -
(We worked for just a half-hour until she stopped.)

"I'll mark up some other time to we meet up here."
- should be -
"I'll mark up some other time for us to meet up here."

That's all for now...I'll try to do some more after dinner.

I was temporarily confused. The warning I was talking about earlier is about a profile that is included in a story, but does not exist. Stories are presumed to exist, and that's why it not existing causes the game to throw an error, and auto-closes.

I don't know how if dewelar has the story-condition in the header, but, they are in Ruri's story. Considering the error message that is raised when Izumi's story was deleted from Uchioniko, a similar error (if not the self-same) is raised when a non-existant story is part of a header condition, or in a branch condition.

Considering this, I don't believe there is a way to have a story be a condition without that story existing. In respect to what dewelar wants to do, I can't see how that would work without requiring Masako's content. I mean, even if he imports Masako's story into Noriko, it would probably crash from masako_story attempting to refer to to the undefined "ID = 10"?

Ugh. My head hurts from all this.

Hmmm...so my choices are:

1. Remove any references to Masako altogether
2. Spoil the easter egg by either having separate files or forcing the user to have Masako installed.
3. Leave everything as it is and blame Masako's psi powers for the user's weird responses

Despite the temptation, I think I will rule out '3' ;). If I go with '2', I'm going to have to do a fair amount of rewriting, because if I'm going to do it, I'm going to do it properly. The reactions of Masako and <player> to each other would be dependent on their status, which means I'd have to run the whole thing past Marrend before actually posting anything. Also, I'd have to take into account whether Masako has disappeared, because if she has I presume I'd have to default to option '1'...

Gah, it's almost enough to make me want to scrap the whole thing...
Heyo ^^

I tested the '2' option, you can create a separate file called i.e. "Noriko_crossover1.txt" which requires Masako profile.
That way if the player don't have Masako installed he'll receive a warning and the game still runs (which also "asks" him to download Masako), and if he already do it will run without any kind of warning, and therefore will not spoil the extra content.
The thing starts to get complicated because crossover makes part of the route though, you'll need to block the "without crossover" version of the story from triggering if you have it installed.
As Marrend said, if you tie anything to stories on files that don't exist it will cause a exception and crash the game, the first way that comes to my mind, and maybe the only, to get around this, is by day requirements chained with High priority. I don't really like to use day locks though, as elapsed days until as story floats with the amount of routes installed .-.

ps. Yeah I got six mp's, and they even have a speace of time between them. x3
Render was already taking a look at the grammar, you probably missed cause he said into a hide tag, maybe would be better to MP him about his progress, to avoid correcting the same parts twice and save you guys some time. ^^
Anyhow thanks for the heads up, I'll get these changes done.

I tested the '2' option...

Thanks for checking that out. Seems like there would be a lot of hoops to jump through, so I think it's probably best to go with Mute's suggestion of having two separate files, one for use with Masako and one without. Yeah, I'll have to maintain two files whenever I update Noriko, but I'd rather do that than force someone to install content they might not want.

ps. Yeah I got six mp's, and they even have a speace of time between them. x3

My apologies again. I don't know why RMN kept telling me there was an error. Live and learn :) .

Ah, okay. I actually sent Render a few things I found when I playtested Megumi as well, and am waiting to hear back from him because I know he's on vacation right now. At this point, maybe I should just hold off on any more playtesting of Eliza & c. until he's finished his review. I had started another batch of similar stuff, so just let me know what I should do with it.

Anyhow thanks for the heads up, I'll get these changes done.

Cool! By the way, I like Eliza's story quite a bit, although admittedly the grammar issues are quite distracting :| .

I didn't look at the story file until after each event happened, so I didn't know that talking to Miki about the bet would be such a huge pothole :( . It just seemed like a normal thing for <player> to do there.

Yeah it is, especially on a game like Heartache, I wonder how bad my grammar sound to you guys. xD

Eliza got quite mad didn't she? :3
If <player> say that he'll make up to the deadline, her Shadowy side will immediately understand that everything he did was only to that purpose. In other hand if <player> turn Miki down she'll eventually reason out later. ^^
Hope that sounded correctly in-game, as this supernatural capacity to reason, but still being human enough to rage blindly at first. Is one of the key points on her personality.

A funny thing happened to me when getting back to Emiko-sama. I wanted to give her some SFX for various reasons. I'm not sure about the train wreck yet, but, the training sessions with her seemed like it would need them. All I wanted to do was write up a lame story with "SOUND = Emiko\RPGMXP - Heal02.ogg" to see how the line actually worked. At first, it was a small bit of code, as it was, literally, test-code:

STORY 101
# Test story
SOUND = Emiko\RPGMXP - Heal02.ogg
ID = Marrend
Does the "sound" command have at the file with just one go, does it keep looping? Mr. Help File suggests looping, but...
SOUND = None
ID = Marrend
...It should be silent right now anyway.

However, I got an error message that said...

Error: Expected 'PLACE=' or 'PRIORITY=' or 'CONDITION=' or 'INTRODUCE=' or 'DATING=' or 'ENDING=' or 'ENDING CUSTOM=' or 'MUSIC=' or 'REPEATABLE' but read 'SOUND' for Story 101 in file 'Emiko/emiko_story.txt'

...which told me that the parser somehow thought SOUND was part of the header-code, when it really isn't. MUSIC is also not a header-code, but I digress. While I highly doubt an exception like this will be thrown on a regular basis, I think it's better to know that it exists (and how to remove it) rather than be left in the dark. For the sake of reference, this is what I eventually wrote to get it to run without the game throwing a tantrum an exception:

STORY 101
# Test story
MUSIC = none
SOUND = Emiko\RPGMXP - Heal02.ogg
ID = Marrend
Does the "sound" command have at the file with just one go, or, does it keep looping the file? Mr. Help File suggests that it loops, but...
SOUND = None
ID = Marrend
...It should be silent right now anyway.

^ Make a note of this issues, and for that matter any others you encounter between the time I last released an update continuing, please. I don't have time to look at this now.
The Oracle's first story sequence has a bit of a bug. It's marked as a City story, meaning it can happen in city places that don't require you to board the train before visiting them. Fixing this should be simple enough. Just set the event to a Train event.

...This bug was probably fixed in a later version I never downloaded. I hope not.

As it happens, that event still occurs in the "City".

The idea was to have that event occur after getting off the train. I probably used "City" as a super-shortcut to alleviate the headaches of doing a virtual Common Event, and calling it with STORYs with PLACEs where the train can drop you off.

Though, that's not to say that making it a "Train" event isn't a bad idea. Hrm.

Huh. I thought ID #20 was taken. Apparently, Fuyuki (the character, not the user of the same name) having an ID of 20 is fine. That was one of the things I was going to note too.

Never mind!
And I'm finally back to my home computer, so I can start working on my characters again! Although it may take a little bit before I start writing them in earnest because I'm still doing some writing for my game.
A code suggestion that is far more thought out than my last one: For those who want events that only trigger in either <player>'s town or in the neighboring city, I submit CITY A and CITY B, respectively. For compatibility reasons, CITY would remain to continue encompass both regions... or is that another stupid idea from me? ^.^;

Anywho, this will technically be my third time requesting them, actually, but could I get ID 63 for Eienji Rie and 66 for Ichini Sanshi? I guess I should also reserve 61 for Hisatsuki Seiryuu and 62 for Torahashi Mio, while I'm at it. I would reserve IDs for the characters related to Yurihara Sakura, but I'm still uncertain of whether or not they will be for Clean Mode.

Funnily enough, I already had the notation of "ID 66 = Ichini Sanshi [BDFalcon, unpublished]" in my ID-listing-file. The others you mentioned? Not so much. I may attempt to find the post where you asked for those sometime later.

Or, I can not worry about it, and just make the updates? Ugh. I almost hate being the one-and-only Heartache-dev that visits RMN on a regular basis.
