Francesca is such a tool.

Gourd Clae Reviews
~Pre-note~

Weird Dreams is a short, surreal game. It seems like alot of people SAID they'd review this, but they didn't? Its score doesn't suffer from anything in particular. However, despite being short, I did enjoy it-hence the review! This'll contain spoilers, but this game is so short I figure it doesn't matter.

Well, let's begin gnawing at its innards!

~Gameplay~

Seperated into several categories, just like my previous review.

Battles:

So, battles in Weird dreams are simple. I kind of like simple-but that's just because I like VX's DBS anyway. Using the DBS, you level up quickly, learning plenty of abilities and magic- I like that. You learn your various skills and abilities almost every other level. I actually found it rather annoying every time you get your entire moveset rehauled, but I suppose it couldn't be helped-I mean it wouldn't make any sense if you kept the same skills after your transformations. Definitely nothing innovative, but nothing particularly bad either.

Exploration:

Um, you pretty much go up a mountain...That's about it. You COULD have put in some more areas like Fran's town, and maybe some more areas in the house-I would've really enjoyed exploring that house. Or maybe you could have put her on different sides of the mountain, each definitively different from each other side! Erm, you did not do good in this category. Sorry.

Don't worry! I won't count it against you!

Well, you can't really blame him-I don't recognize you either!

~Graphics\Mapping~

Again, nothing too special here. Weird Dreams uses the RTP and has a "good enough" kind of feel to it. The house in the above picture is kind of annoying to look at, though. Also, the way Fran flies kind of looks like she just floats right to the platform. Perhaps you could have made it look more like she's flying, or make it look like she's teleported from panel to panel.

Oh, and before I forget, I remember seeing your title screens, they were pretty bad...I like the one you ultimately decided on, though, good job! Also, I thought it was strange how the snow met the dirt path-it looks kind of weird. Maybe use a different path, or none at all? Hm, in a way, you can kind of tell that there was a deadline to this game's creation.

This displays the panels and encounters of the game. May as well have had stairs-well, I suppose it does help the surrealism.

~Music\Sounds~

Yay! More RTP! Not that there's anything wrong with that. There are plenty RPGMAKER games that I enjoyed with RTP everything. I could list them but it seems like it would be a little innappropriate. Anyway, all the sounds and music fit, so it's not like it's GAME BREAKINGLY BAD, just a little overused.

~Plot\Characters~
We start with a little breakfats when Victor calls us up and asks Francesca to come to the mountain. Francesca says yes and when she gets to the mountain, Victor shows Francesca the panels which we'll use to get to the strange cabin-what a nice guy! Once Fran gets to the cabin she decides to take a nap.Wait, what?Apparently, she's perfectly fine with sleeping in a stranger's bed. I suppose it could be stranger-like being caught in an endless loop of dreams. Oh. Francesca IS caught in an endless loop of dreams. How cliche. And apparently Victor isn't as nice of a guy as I thought. I suppose that's better than her father being the villain.

I am genuinely curious as to why Victor wanted the Hero Armor. I'm assuming it's because it's all a dream... Also, Francesca is such a tool! She just plays into Victor's hands, and pretends to be a hero the second she discovers what he really is. She never does figure out she's dreaming which is kind of amusing. Or, does she? Anyway, perhaps you could give Fran some more coviction like "AH, crap! HE's the bad guy? I can't believe I was fooled!" or something like that. Despite that, I AM a sucker for cliches. Just trying to help you improve it for those who don't.

Nothing too special or bad.

Evil villain to the rescue! Also, there's a spelling error...

~Prelude~
This game was pretty average in every category. Fran is a tool like I said earlier, but I'm sure you wouldn't have it any other way. Basically, meh.

But you do deserve an
ACHIEVEMENT!

Thanks for the review! I'd like to think that, with this game, I learned something about game development in general. Like never get involved in an event unless you know exactly what you're doing. I'd like to think that I'm applying what I learned here elsewhere, but only time will tell if I actually learned anything.

Coming into this game with no knowledge of anything, this game would probably fall more in the "silly" category than "surreal". Damn developer knowledge versus player knowledge! Always gets in my way!

A sub-theme for almost everything I do here is "not everything is as it seems". What this title attempted to outside of that sub-theme and utterly fails at doing both was ask questions of existential nature: Is reality as we know it merely a dream? If so, what happens to our reality if that dreamer wakes up? Stuff like that.

Of course, if all one sees is a game with overly cliched everything with RTP graphics, then I highly doubt such questions will come to mind.
Actually, I NEVER ask if something means "more" than it is. I figure I'll just take things as they are and have other people tell me what it means even if those aren't my exact thoughts at the time. Really if somebody tells me " It means PB and J is going to take over the world" I'd find it inciteful. But I just don't have the kind of mind that thinks beyond - only appreciate it if I know what it means.
