Ever had a dream that you just can't explain, or would simply prefer not to? Meet Francesca, and lead her through the adventures of her subconscious!

Personal background:
Totally not a reference to this game.

I was thinking about the event's theme ("surrealism"), and I was going through some thoughts about how to work with it. Then, it hit me: dreams. Dreams are the window to the subconscious. And can get pretty surreal, when they want to be.

Running with that idea, each of the game's three chapters (if not three chapters, then at least three sections) are based on dreams I've actually had (though the specific details of said dreams are sketchy at best).

Update!

As the title of the blog suggests, there is a new version of Weird Dreams ready to be downloaded.

What's changed:
The number of enemies wandering on the maps that have been cut significantly. I have also made enemies less difficult in general. The experience curve isn't as crazy as it was. I expect players to go not terribly much higher than level 15, even if they choose to grind. Unless they are absolutely in love with the VX DBS. There is also a change to the title screen. Thanks go out to NOACCEPTANCE722 for the artwork!

What still needs to be done:
Even if I'm wrong about the difficulty being fixed for however many times I've claimed that the difficulty's been fixed, I don't think I have it in me to work on this any more.

Where to get it:
1) The downloads tab. It's the one simply marked "Weird Dreams".
2) Click the "Download" button on this page
3) Click the "Download now!" button.

In other news:
I've played all the contest entries except I'm Scared of Girls. Probably high-time to change that.

This reminds me of a game idea I had all planned out back when I was going through a surrealism phase and watching lots of Bunuel films. But I took too long to start on it and lost my inspiration.

It looks like combat isn't the focus of the gameplay, which is a good thing in my book.
Wow, the demo was really promising looking, great job!
Only one minor glitch, the last set of jumping platforms (The ones that you must activate with the lever, you can step on that location and jump to the top even if the platforms aren't there, and the lever remains in its upright position.
GOOD GAME!!! DOWNLOADED AND PLAYING!!! Hope you win man! You truly are a bludgeon of inspiration!

*Rakes in the downloads and subscribers!*

In seriousness, thanks for the support, guys. Really. As for having the switch-enabled platforms to do their thing before they are supposed to, yeah, I see how I messed that up now. Just fixed it, but I don't expect to be uploading another version any time soon.

Combat isn't supposed to be a focus in the initial parts of the game, but I'm seeing it being more of a focus later on. Seeing as I'm basically using the same calcumaitons for balancing critters for this game as Matsumori Days, we'll see how that idea turns out.

By the way, I don't care if I win or loose. I'm just in it for the
ACHIEVEMENT!

Side note: Sorry, had to do that rainbow tech one more time!
Maybe you want your characters to jump up and down the cliffs instead of slide through them?

Well, she's supposed to be flying (or a close facsimile thereof) over the cliffs. I just figured that allowing her to have move animations in-flight were inappropriate.
Well...I'll be honest, I can't wait to check this out! Haven't downloaded yet, but from the sounds of things, I'll be wanting to! I like the sound of the concept.

Good luck on the contest!

One of theses days/games, I'll get a comment that reads something to the effect of, "New Marrend game!? Subscribed!"

But, clearly, this is neither the day, nor the game.
So I played through what I think is the end of the demo (ends at the signs that say the developer hasn't implemented those areas, right?). Couple things.

A: I like the dialogue. It's got a really kind of snitty quality to it, if that's one way I can put it. Not that there's much to it so far (it's very short!), but it's definitely fun.

B: I actually got killed my first time through, haha. Granted, that was my fault for not using the provided healing spot, or the spells I had, but the enemies remind me of Matsumori Stories, where they'll be STRONG at first and then nearly pitifully easy later. The experience curve is probably fine though. As with Matsumori Stories, I appreciate the way you handle running into battles.

C: I'm actually looking forward to playing this when you're done! Once again, your skills for writing show pretty well, and I can't wait to see where the story goes.

I actually didn't notice this was one of your's, until after I had read the info on the game. All the more reason to play it, if that helps! I kind of wish RMN had a "subscribe to developer" option, there's a number of people here I'd like to follow.

Fact: The demo that's currently up uses the exact same calcumations for enemy stats as Matsumori Days did. Hence, I'm not surprised by your comment about enemy power. Personally, I found the foes for the demo build to be incredibly weak, but I also totally abused the rest-point. So who knows?

I've went through two re-configures of enemy stats thus far in hopes of balancing this. The first one had the enemies a bit too difficult for my personal tastes. The other one is currently underway as far as playtesting is concerned. If worse comes to worse, I'll go back to my Matsumori theories and generally leave game-balance skewed in the player's favor, as the game's focus isn't really combat per say. Then again, it might also make a certain amount of sense to skew combat in the players favor.

Things to consider, anyway.
I just realized... Catherine?

As in the game by Atlus that came out recently? Never played it. If that had any affect on my inspiration, I would have noted it.
Its about a man who in his dreams he climbs cliffs... and his dreams are weird.

I haven't played the whole demo (lazy on the monsters), just up to where she meets the guy with the armor, about, I must say, I haven't seen anything evoking surrealism yet, otherwise, yes, the dialogue is fun,, the monsters pretty hard!

Critter balance is my bane, evidently. I can't seen to find that sweet spot where they aren't too difficult, but are challenging enough to warrant the tactical use of abilities.

As for evoking surrealism, I think I can afford to wait until you finish the game and we can shoot PMs back and forth without fear of spoiling the game to others who may, or are required, to play it. Supposing you have the patience to finish it with the critter balance as it is!

Not that it matters, really, but how did the game size ballon from 1.1 MBs to 42?

Just wondering. Anyways, going to take the full plunge soon.
Here's an LT for you.

Didn't get as far in as I would've liked but uh, that wasn't really an option.
Wait, I'm guessing the game size rise was due to the inclusion of the RTP? I'm stupid.

Anyways, similar to psy_wombat's let's try, I made it to the first boss fight...Except that I had grinded my way to level 22, and I still was no match for him. That, and my healing spells healed less then the amount of damage he did.

Anyways, intriguing so far. I like the writing, and the ideas, especially with the way the main character did the change, alongside the way she changes back to her normal self when she enters a house. If/when I finish it, I'll write a proper review...At the moment, I don't feel like grinding to beat the first boss.
