Prequel or Sequel? The answer may depend on YOU!

A question born of general curiosity and my bored and aimlessly wandering mind. If another game were to be made taking place in (on?) the world of Tsufanubra, would you prefer a prequel centred around the kjrn and the hardships they endured, or a true sequel that took place either immediately/some years after this game's story came to a close?

This is more or less directed at those who either finished the game already, or came extremely close.

I've been tossing both ideas around a lot in my head lately, but wanted to see what your opinions were regarding a potential (VERY FAR OFF) sequel.

Prequel, or true sequel...? WHAT SHOULD IT BE?!

If you're clever, you can have both. Just have an item in the game that acts like a book you can read that details the history of the kjrn and you can find special trinkets that teach the player about the deeper history of the kjrn and would allow them to engage with bonus scenarios that have to do with only the most engaging parts of their history. I was planning on doing something like this with Tales from Zilmurik and I think it'll work quite well.

When Celes inevitably turns into an evil goddess, you can have people wondering why something like that would happen, opening the door for the world's deeper exploration into the laws and history of the kjrn. This might also introduce some sympathy to the crippled race which you could use to breed conflict between those stuck in their ways and those who serve a "devious cause".

Either way, totally looking forward to CoT2.
Personally, I'm still partial to the idea of a sequel which spins off from
the alternate ending where Celes lets Veryl absorb her power and become a god.

I think a prequel would probably be limited by the fact that so many of the key plot points were already revealed in CoT. There's a lot less room for the sort of big surprises CoT featured. I think something along the lines of Corfaisus' idea is good (although personally I prefer to devote full scenes, or at least NPC dialogue, to that sort of plot and backstory development, rather than item interaction.) You can have flashbacks, historical documents, discussions, etc. in a sequel which reveal information from the past, like we did in CoT, and that can be used to cover information which didn't make it into the previous game. That way, the narrative can explore some of the juicier bits from the backstory, without giving away how the plot will develop in advance.
Don't bother with a Prequel. Backstory is born from morbid curiosity on the part of fandom, and 99 times out of 100 it turns out to be inferior quality to the original material.
If there's more to tell, you'd be better off either doing what Corf suggested and having available info in a Sequel, or including it as critical plot elements of said sequel.

And on the subject of a sequel, I have a pitch.
CoT is a re-envisioning of Dragon Fantasy 1, right? Why not make CoT2 a re-envisioning of Dragon Fantasy 2? Here's how I'd begin it.
Spoilers, obviously.

The story takes place 50-100 years later. Celes is a God and the guardian spirit of the Kjrn, but you could say she's done too good of a job. The Kjrn have advanced leaps and bounds scientifically and magically, and are on the offensive against humanity, wanting to carve a section of Tsufanubra out for themselves. Their justification for conquest is a combination of grievances for past mistreatment and a newly instilled sense of race superiority, given their advancements and the human's relative backwardness. The human's justification for refusing to yield them any ground is the old "we were here first", and obviously that for the Kjrn to have additional territory means that a human kingdom would have to move/disappear.

So right off the bat, you have a situation with no clear good or bad side. You could write some warmonger factions inside one or both races, or even have a co-racial conspiracy that has it's own intentions. It could also expand to include a malevolent third party from Arbunafast or beyond, or maybe one of the other two of the Three Kings is taking advantage of Celes' naiveté.

Gameplay-wise, DF2 gave you a Hero and 3 out of 8 possible character classes at the player's discretion. For CoT2, have a 9 person roster with each class represented by a unique character. A human Holy Knight, a Kjrn Dark Knight, some kind of critter for the Inflicter (like Red VIII or Shadow Heart II's Blanca), and so on.
For bonus points, have old man Yoor reprise his role as the party's Priest >:D
Where CoT1 strategy was derived mostly from the party's equipment, CoT2 strategy would be more to do with what party members you bring along because of the skills they have.

Upon rebooting DF2 for a second, I see that it opens with the hero being told by the king to go fight Emperor Xyan, and that only he can do it because he has the blood of a hero.
I'd shy away from that kind of opening. It worked in CoT1 because Celes being the savior was an integral part of the plot, but unless CoT2's writing generates the same kind of relevance, I'd lower the hero's launch point to something more like "Go do this thing to help us win the war" or "My sibling is missing. I'm off to find him/her."

What I've proposed would be a lot larger and more epic than CoT1, especially considering the 9-person party and related character development, but I have a feeling help will be forthcoming.
Corf already expressed interest in being your mapper again in another thread. Trihan said something about being available for more battle anims. Desertopa is loitering around. I think he's waiting for some kind of invitation. And if it sounds like it'll be something awesome, I'll pitch in too.

I'm actually working on my own game now, but writing/editing is a pretty fast process for me, so I should have time for side projects. I wouldn't mind reprising my role.
Alternatively, if Desertopa wants to be coy about it and act like he supposes he could if it's not too much trouble but he has other stuff on the go so he'll do what he can whenever he can, then keep in mind that I also write, and quite well I'll say with confidence.
It's kind of hard for me to prove since everything I've uploaded to RMN thus far are all joke games, but I think I could produce some validating material on a moment's notice.
And if Luchino hadn't burned all her bridges in a narcissistic hissy fit, she could have vouched for me too.
That was an awkward job application, Dyhalto, but if you're needed and up to the task, I'll be rooting for you. ;)
Does it seem that awkward? Apart from the my razzing Desertopa, which I hope didn't go over the wrong way x)
There's nothing wrong with multiple writers for this kind of project, seeing as there's the core storyline, character development, main dialogue, NPC dialogue, and more. But maybe three would be a too-many-cooks situation (Ephiam is a good writer too).

Shanghai J-Man to do sprite work while he's in the neighborhood.

Not for free mind you! >;3
Honestly... I would want BOTH -_-

I am not helpful now am I? How about a true sequel if I had to choose....
Reimagining dragon fantasy 2 sounds like a great idea. I vote for dyhalto's suggestion.
All of these are fantastic ideas, and I'm loving the prolonged interest in this series, but a sequel would have to flow a little differently than a simple re-imagining. Or perhaps not, considering that's what Chronicles of Tsufanubra is, I guess? I just think it would need to be broken down and reconstructed even more than the original Dragon Fantasy to properly fit with the newly established canon.

However, the ideas pitched here have inspired me! They've helped me see a potential route I could take the story that would perhaps see our beloved and newly-appointed deity fall from grace in an unconventional way. As a hint to what I mean, the Three Kings are stated to (and even mention so themselves during the game's final scenes) not directly involve themselves within the affairs of those they've been tasked with overseeing unless they face total annihilation. However, Celes was once mortal, and her mind may handle things different than an existence born into god-hood.
