Realms of Arcanum’s gameplay is heavily inspired in traditional RPGs, and carries over most of their classic features. It also revolves around the crystal spirits and the Class system: some of them will unlock new classes you can change. Some of these include the Warrior, the Archer, the Purifier and the Spellthief. A detailed overview of all classes is coming soon!
As you progress through the story, gain levels and defeat enemies, you will gain Job Points that you can spend to learn new abilities. You can select a secondary class to enable their skills in battle, as well, in a system that is reminiscent of Final Fantasy Tactics.
This may all seem old and reused. However, the array of classes, their mechanics and abilities are innovating. As an example, the Spellthief can manipulate enemies' ability to cast spells or downright cut their Mana and deal extreme damage with an ability that scales off the target's missing MP. The Invoker caster class will have the player combine patterns of elemental orbs in order to unleash the desired spell, in a way that keeps battles entertaining and makes you stay focused at all times~.
The system is intended to give the player great freedom in how to play out battles, but also offer different strategies that may be more efficient. You can just slash your way through your enemies with attacks and straightforward damage abilities, but battles are not a cakewalk, and being careless can come at a steep price. If you choose your abilities properly, you can easily dispatch a group of enemies without taking a lot of damage in the process, or wasting too many resources.
The bottom line in the design process of battle gameplay is: Stay on your toes at all times!
