Idea Bounce?

In the case that you were not aware, there was a small IRC-based event over last weekend. I had come prepared with three talking points, but, Mute was the only person that showed up. Which is hilarious, since he might not have even known about it, were I not have linked to the event on a post I made on Heartache 101 - Sour Into Sweet's "story-help" page.

Anyway, among my talking points was about this game. There have been times, quite recently, where I just don't care about this anymore. During these times, I've been sorely tempted to take up the Release Something version, and fixing up the bug that Mr_Detective found in regards to the Case Notes, and call it done. Maybe re-do some of the maps, and re-inserting the lockpicking mini-game as well.

I'm not really sure this is a good idea, though. I mean, on one hand, the Release Something version (which is still up!) may be, in an approximate way, how I saw this game pan out originally. It's also a lot closer to being complete than the current ideation. On the other hand, I got a lot of flak from my beta-testers (Maybe it was just Dozen?) in regards to the Release Something version. Like, a lot of flak. I dunno. It kinda feels like a craptastrophe waiting to happen regardless of which direction I go.

So, what manner of opinions are out there concerning this? Keep with the current ideation? Go with the old, with improvements? What's the gig, people?

I suppose it depends Marrend, if you feel like this is more of a chore than a exercise in working towards a goal perhaps a break is needed. Not a throw in the towel moment, just well, a Hiatus. That's why the status is available on RMN after all and why you've moved this game into that category.

Walk away from it all for a little while, both the new iteration and the fix-it-up version, If you don't feel it is right leaving a version up that has a bug, take it down for a while. The only person who can dictate how you spend you hobby/leisure time is you.

I have been known to needle developers if I really like their games to continue with a story, or a sequel (Enelysion and Yuna being the latest) but if she had turned around and told me to politely sod off and that her passion had waned, that is not only perfectly acceptable, it is completely reasonable and I would have accepted it with as much grace as I could muster.

It's your work and whilst I applaud the sense of honour you show in feeling a level of obligation to your betas, in truth it is only yourself that can claim obligation. If you feel it is the right thing to do to continue, then do so, if not now, then later. However if you cannot muster up passion then accept the fact it met the criteria for which it was developed and walk away.

Creativity needs juice, and if you have none for a project you will, in the end, be unsatisfied by the result.

I should say however that I have never played this game so I am, obviously, speaking only in the hypothetical.
