One day, Mario and Luigi received a letter inviting them to a hip-happening party going down in the mysterious World 9. After a long journey filled with trials and tribulations, they began to notice the imposing veneer of a towering stronghold...in World 7.

This was the legendary Fortress of Solitude. No one who has gone in has ever come out again. Will you be the first to do so?

Castles - Masterpiece Set is a compilation of castle levels in SMBX by the RMN community. It isn't so much a game as it is a gallery of levels. The focus of this event was Level Design: To make castles that are more engaging via the obstacles and layout of each level rather than through atmosphere or graphics. It's pretty tough!

~TO INSTALL~
1. If you don't have it, download SMBX (it's free!).
2. Download the gamefile and extract the .zip to the SMBX "worlds" folder.
3. Start up SMBX, click "Start Game" on the splash screen, and you're ready to go!

kentona - it's not compiled, atm. after talking about it last night i wanted to go in and tinker with it. all the tiles are scattered between different maps. do you want something right away? or do you want to wait a little while for a better package?
I am interested in a better package. oooooo increase size by 3 inches! *clicks

Don't think you're allowed to make levels prior to the event...
You're not. Previously created levels won't be admitted into the game, and it's not in the spirit of the event to make them in advance.
In that case I’ll stop.

I know this is kind of off-topic, but what ever happened to your "sword-scape" games?

I can't believe someone actually remembers Swordscape! What happened was this: I noticed that hardly anyone cared about the game, yet I was spending so much time on it. So I stopped. I could pick the game back up, if you really wanted me to. Alternatively, I could just put what I have made already up for download.
haha i'm in the process of pulling in new monsters. then it will be music and sounds. the smbx engine will be part of the package. one of the reasons is so you can use events to switch between multiple custom songs in the same level.

as much as i'd like to finish polishing the review, i'm going to leave it be for a little while. it was a grueling 8 hours to finish and it will take quite a while to fix the grammar and insert all the images. plus, i want 2112 makerscore just a little while longer :D

if anyone is curious of the final score for the game it's
86/100

EDIT: and it's an average of the score i gave each level

The 524 is for 524 Stone Crabs

86/100 isn't bad. Glad we did an SMBX compilation right for once.

Well, considering the others were something like 20 to 40 out of a hundred, we did great on this one!

I would have more makerscore If I did things.

I bet an eighth of all my money that a big reason we didn't score higher was because my levels were tough!

What is that, like 16 dollers?

Hahaha! That's kinda mean.

Indeed. We're going to try and, hopefully, continue the trend with RMN World.

Wrong, 0. I don't have any money.
This is a pretty good game so far, and I am liking the levels (and all of the graphics I am going to steal for future levels of mine). I only have a few gripes:

1. The difficulty rating doesn't match the level's difficulty at all, except in about 2 levels I've played

2. Davenport has gotten better at not making spastic looking levels

3. Did anyone playtest pyrodoom's final segment of his level? it is a good level with neat ideas, but that final area is a pit of death. I lost 10+ lives there. Getting one little powerup when contending with 2 ghosts, 2 koopas, a firespitter, and a goomba generator whilst trying to deal with out of sync platforms is a killer. I could not get through there without getting hit, dying over a half-dozen times, only to meet the most difficult boss to date. It was a neat design brought down by a lack of a second powerup. I get the sense that whomever tested came into the area powered up with other things and didn't think twice about that final segment. Still, a good level.

Yeah, it would be fun to see it return! Maybe since you have a lot more experience it could be a lot better than the last one if you decide to ever finish it.

i know! that last one is kind of iffy, but i was pleasently surprised. now if he would only start not being spastic in his posting...heh

my thoughts exactly. that's the reason i gave his level a failing mark. glad it's not just me that felt that way.

i also wonder if anyone playtested isrieri's final level, or if he used his executive privileges to force it in. i would have protested it being included if i was any kind of judge for an event, or cared enough to want to protest.

The good and bad thing about me heading this event is that I'm really good at Mario games. So I tend to let stuff slide as a result of hardly ever encountering rough patches. Pyrodoom's level in particular I don't think I ever died more than twice per testing. Boss included.

Morale of the story: On no account should I ever be allowed to gauge level difficulty. At least it was a good learning experience!

I love that Link's mind immediately leapt to "executive privliges." ^.^
Concerning my level: I tried to limit myself.

I'm dreading your level in my Let's Play. I went in the editor to look at it. The first half preceding the checkpoint isn't overly bad. It's everything afterward.

Isrieri offered the opportunity for everyone to critique his level during the event. Not his fault. My only complaints involve the last half, but the level as a a whole is still fair.

I thoroughly enjoyed Isreiri's level. It's one of the lot I had legitiment trouble with that wasn't unfair.
There was always a way to beat an obstacle, and most of the time it was easier thought of than done, but still invigorating once you did it.

I agree. The last level was pretty descent.
Thanks for all the feedback. :D
I think you folks are starting to get it. I'd like to see this sort of peer review and revision continue with RMN World.
