The Real Deal

Looking at the download count for this game makes me lose hope in humanity.
Gaidon Saga was the second game I made with RPG Maker. Was it an improvement over the first one? Well... It depends on how you look at it. It uses a lot more resources that the first one. It also has a lot of annoying switches, like I really over did it with that mechanic. Only a sadistic human would download this game. A person who hates themselves sooooo deeply that they need to feel the pain of despair. You have been warned.

Background

Giadon is divided into the five elemental kingdoms: Earth, Fire, Air, Water, and Aether. In ancient times there was a war between the kingdoms that almost ripped the very fabric of existence apart. In order to prevent the destruction of all existence the five nations signed a peace contract that has lasted thousands of years.

Main Character and Main Story

Da-Zar is the second son to the King of the Fire people. Da-Zar specializes in Fire Magic and Katana weapon skills. The story of Da-Zar starts out as he tries to protect his home from the ever growing threat of monsters. But as the story progresses he learns of a looming war between the Air and the Water people. Da-Zar must unravel the mystery of who is behind the chaos in order to restore balance to the world.

The story mainly takes place in Firago, the capital of the Fire people. At the beginning of the story there doesn't seem like there is much to do in Firago. As the story progresses more conversations, items, and quests will become available.

Other Characters

Besides Da-Zar, there are up to Eight other playable characters that will join and leave the party through the course of the story. Here is a list of characters early in the game:

  • Lei-Won: Da-Zar’s older brother and next in line to become King of Firago. While also specializing in Fire Magic, Lei-Won’s Katana skills differ greatly from Da-Zar’s.

  • Hone: A monk with a very humble demeanour. He specializes in hand to hand combat and some restorative magic.

  • Sini: As Hone’s wife she is more cheerful and upbeat. Sini doesn’t focus much on attack skills, instead has a wider variety of healing magic.

Features

  • Yanfly Battle Engine and Celianna Tilesets.

  • Each enemy has its own strengths and weaknesses based on its elemental affinity.

  • Optional quests, optional dungeons, optional final boss, and an optional playable character.

  • NewGame+, which allows you to replay the game with your stats and equipment.

  • Approximately 10 hours of gameplay possible.

Make sure you downloaded the right RTP, there's more than one.
(The tab needs to be on RPG Maker VX Ace.)

http://www.rpgmakerweb.com/download/run-time-package

If its still asking for the RTP after this, then I
would suggest redownloading the game. (Or take your
question to the forums for some more expert advice
based on your Windows operating system.)

You can try downloading another RPG Maker VX Ace
game to see if that game works, if it doen't then
there's something wrong with the RTP you downloaded.

Let me know if there is any other different problem with the
download and I will try my best to help you.

Yeah I gave this one a go, but like a few others in this thread I just threw in the towel once I hit the werewolves/healer combo. Try to take out the werewolf and the healer keeps him going, try to take out the healer and the werewolf claws you a new one.

Also, not being able to sell anything in the shops? Sorry the whole point of upgrading (ooh, look I bought a couple of black katana's) means I should be able to sell my old ones so I can maybe buy a bit of equipment. Seems a little harsh to stop me doing that, and also makes me less likely to keep going when other things get to me (like the werewolves).

I also have to add my two cents to the mapping, the rooms are HUGE with almost nothing in them, the shop keepers are miles from the door with no stock on display, the castle seems to have 3 rooms in total (throne, big brother & Da-Zar's) and miles and miles of corridors, the pub is 14 windows long with 6 tables and a bar in the far corner, in fact apart from the crazy collector lady no-one needs to have rooms that large.

Though the CCL does bring up a point. I really like the humour in this game, humour is a hard one to get right, but this really works for me. I found it hilarious that one of the first quests was to make sure the 'service provider' got paid and then the way the prince was paid back, priceless. The prince is an arrogant so-and-so, but you say he is in his bio and he lives up to it, characters are well rounded and actually interesting and do make me want to keep going.

But oh, those sodding werewolves!

The area is small and once you have more party members,
which is soon, will make it easier.

Thank you for your feedback.
The area might well be small but the frequency of attacks along with the strength and continually hitting you while it takes you time to scroll down and fight, spell or bendover, makes each battle something to basically sit back and just see how long it takes to wipe out your party. And then you have to fight that skeleton....monsters are simply overpowered or too damn quick...SOMETHNG is too much...and this early in the game....?!
Obviously others have gotten past this and even finished the game. I am thinking there is simply bad luck for most players.
On the other hand whats the gainof creating monsters that people complain about rather than tell you how they enjoy the game overall. Most like a challenge whether its monsters, bosses, puzzles etc but when you find areas like the one we are all talking about, and you see posts about being frustrating or throwing in the towel....and your comments are essentially oh well, get past this bump in the road and all will be better...THAT is frustrating. I think even you alluded to the fact that the game will only get harder...gee what an incentive to keep playing.
As I mentioned before I like the game and the music is really good. Like Nhubi said the humor is really witty! I look forward to seeing what someone is going to say next.
As far as I am concerned you guys and gals who make these games have extreme talent....kudos to all. And a game is a game is a game, been there done that,etc.....its hard to create something which will stand out.
In any case, Nhubi presented the overall case very well ....pay attention to it. Your response didnt really address anything she/he) said.
Ok little brother I am finished. Dont take my post as being mean spirited. If I didnt think it was worth playing you would have no post from me at all.
Maybe for people who want to enjoy the game, create a patch that can be d/l if wanted.

A difficult level choice at the start of the game would be
an interesting idea. Probably requires hard core scripting though.
Then lots of playthroughs. And trying to add the New Game +
option so that you could choose a new difficulty when you
restarted the game.... This sounds like an interesting idea.

At the moment Giadon Saga will remain as it is, but I may look
into this in the future.

Hi,
can you give me a hint where the damn special floor tile is ? I'searching now for hours, can't find it.

How many side quests are there ? I see 24, i have finished 23 (Level 37).

There are 30 side quests I believe. 2 side quests require Sontu
to be in your party.... Other quests require you to complete
other quests. One quest requires you to beat the Bad Ass Dungeon,
which is not on the quest board (Talk to Mark on the third floor
of the pub to buy the house to access this dungeon.) The Dark
Caves also is not on the quest board and has an extra section, but
doesn't unlock anything by completing it.

Finding the tile will not unlock any other quests. You will get
to choose one of 4 rewards. Three of the rewards will probably
be pretty useless to you at this point. One reward,
"The Belt of Intimidation," cannot be received any other way
and while equiped reduces random encounters to zero!!!

Finding this tile is supposed to be challenging, but rememeber
when the quest becomes available. Any new area after this will not
have this tile (So it won't be in the Trial of Water, The West Gate,
Path to Darkness, any bonus dungeon-- Dark Caves extra area,
Bad Ass Dungeon, Maze of Shadows, Final Crypt, or Temple of Armos.)
I will also eliminate some other places for you: Its not in a town:
So that includes Firago, Inoa, and Soma. Remember this quest is
supposed to be frustrating. But I think the Belt of Intimdation
is a good equip (the other choices are not worth it.)

Good luck.

I'm in the final chapter, quite ready to begin the last journey (but clearing last missions is my actual priority).
The game is probably "a tad worse", you are right. No, Just kidding.

I personally hate the great part of random fights because they are lamely hard. I mean, if you are levelled up enough to one shot one kill A WHOLE GROUP of enemies it means you have grinded enough BUT..
There is no item preventing status changes and some enemies are just too randomly hard.

FOR THOSE WHO WILL PLAY, KEEP THAT IN MIND: You could get a match every 2 seconds and most of enemies hit twice and fastly so you will see 12 ENEMY HITS IN A ROW and in some cases you can't do nothing. In a certain area you will find an enemy group that will CONFUSE AND SILENCE ALL YOUR PARTY before you can even click or in another area a group that will BERSERK AND BURN all of your party. It means you have just to wait and hope you won't get killed.
Escape rate is near 10%, status change rate near 100% (even sudden death...).

Resume: This game is hard, but boringly hard. What you have to do is stand next to an healing point and save after every battle. That's the only way to grind. Even this way you will have to restart a lot (because of impossible fights, like the "I have all my party confused and silenced from round 0.5 and I have learned that's easier pressing F12 to restart than wait 3 minutes to be dead").

The next time try balancing a little more. ;)
Anyway this game has a lot of REALLY FUNNY stuff, if you're kinky you will love it!

My next game will definitely have a difficulty selection.
I'm not too sure about Giadon Saga, since its easier to
implement a large script like this into something new,
rather than something with a lot of stuff that may or
may not work with the script.

Here's a picture of the difficulty selection screen
in the new game I'm making, just to prove that I
have learned something from this.

Also if anyone can think of anything else they would like
to see in my next game, let me know. I will try my best to
find a script that can handle that.

Other new features in my new game will include:
Having 5 members in the batlle party
and being able to change members in battle
with reserve party members (That means you will
have a much larger party in this game than my previous
games.)
I'm pretty sure anyone could be happy of "weakness spot defense".
In your next game keep that strategy need focused but give players some item to defend from status changes or from elemental weaknesses (even a bit).
I'm in the last dungeon (cleared the "optional" one), against the last boss and my way here has been a nightmare! The 3 elemental masters random encounter kills all my 34 level party before I even click most of the times.
You could also put a megaelixir or something like that between a final boss and a final final boss, because you make game TOO hard to beat this way, Lei kills Kalo every round he spams flame II no matte what and... guy, can a single hit do 6000 damage to Sontu? It's a little bit unfair, there's no chance to keep him alive.

Another hint: for the last last secret post game dungeon. Please, make a way back LoL. I've overwrote the save and now I can't complete the last guild mission :( :( :(

If you can keep her alive the ice arrow is pretty useful,
if you have any technique potions left. Da-Zar's Assault attack
is also hardcore against any enemy. Try to save the Holy attack
for the second final boss, obviously. I think somehwere in the
dungeon there may be a Miracle Potion, which brings back all
KO allies to full HP.

If your going to do the extra optional dungeon after you
beat the game (The one with Jason)
you might want to visit the accessory store
and purchase a set of 3 accessories that raise your
max HP and MP. The last bonus dungeon makes everything
else in the game look like a cakewalk, and this is
coming from the person who likes hard games....
This is also where I have the special looking
battlers, which look pretty cool.

Or there's New Game+, the second playthrough should
be a breeze at level 30+.

Edit: If you overwrote that stay close to the crystals.
Jason's equip doubles gold. You can purchase the new
exclusive potions from the blue crystal and the speacial
potions from the red crystal. (There is no way back from
this dungeon, which is similar to the crypt dungeons
in Dragon Lancer.)

Is it possible for you to send me the save file and for
me to warp you out and send you back the new save file?
You can e-mail me at ktoombs@yahoo.ca with the subject
tag Giadon Saga. I will see what I can do.
Done... hope you can warp me out! I want to know Madame Vi... better :D

I fixed your problem and e-mailed you back.
Hope it works.

Remember for a scetion like this in a game like
this to have more than one save file. I think
Jason even alludes to the fact that you can't
come back.
Going to stop playing this one. First - monsters are wayyy too overbalanced - I have to keep going back to the castle to hit the heal crystal in Da-Zar's room every two or three battles so I don't burn through potions. Second - potions are too expensive in comparison to the amount of gold dropped. I understand mana potions being more expensive, but healing potions should be at least half the cost of mana potions, and potions that remove bad statuses (poison, etc.) should be cheaper than healing potions. Third - no place to sell old equipment. Fourth - random encounter rate is too high considering the overbalancing of the monsters. Fifth - not enough chests in which to find either potions, weapons, armor or accessories. Sixth - weapons, armors and accessories in towns are way too expensive in comparison to the gold dropped. This game needs a complete overhaul.

Not everygame can be everything to everyone.
I'm not here to make everyone happy.
If just one person likes this game then I
have achieved my goal.
If just one person hates this game then I
have achieved my goal.
And as long as no one is indifferent about the game,
it will be at least be remembered for something.

Some people will like this game, a lot of people
will hate this game, and some people will come here
to post about how much this game sucks.

My advice:
Right click, delete, empty recycle bin....

If I knew how to make a game, Id fight for it like it was my own child. Id want everyone to love my game even if they didnt and for sure, not everyone will. I wouldnt be so complacent in my responses to people. I really liked your game BUT it WAS overly biased against the player. Thats not really even a major problem because a challenge makes you say, "Hey I can go back and try this bitch again."
But whenever someone tries to draw you out and hope you show some major love for your creation, you always seem to be,"Well whatever happens, happens...if you dont like it, tough titty."
If you made it just for yourself to enjoy you shouldnt have put it out. But you did. And we played it. We had concerns and ideas and suggestions. As it went along there started to be slight warnings about the difficulty and none stated in meanness but in hopes you might fix it or have an attitude of,"Thanks for the great ideas and I WILL make a better game next time."
But you are so laid back.
I really am curious to see your next game because this had some serious good things with it. But little brother, you need to be more humble in your reactions to those who played your game. That was some bad advice you gave there to Horror even though the review was a little forceful, at least it was accurate.
Right click, delete, empty recycle bin...
This was your child and you kicked it to the curb.

My next game aims to be bigger and better than the last.
Based on current production I'm expecting a release
sometime between November 2013 - January 2014.
But I don't want to rush it. My goal is to
one day get one of my games featured on RMN.
Hopefully my next game is good enough. Here's a screen
shot of an area I'm working on. Any thoughts?

Edit: For those who find Giadon Saga too difficult I have
created a special save file (available in my locker.)
Only use this if you have become completely overwhelmed
with the game's difficulty.

http://rpgmaker.net/users/kory_toombs/locker/
Ok.
Game completed, 30 missions cleared, everything in my way killed.

I already said what I think about the overall difficulty setting and you are aware about it too, so it's useless repeating myself.

2 things, one public and one hidden:
PUBLIC: I see in you a good potential, It's pretty amazing the progress you made in such a short time between your games and personally I can't wait to see your next game. Despite your reactions you proved yourself open to suggestions. Keep going!

Hidden
Well.. Odin... After the final crypt I had a level 68 party and had my bad time against Zeus, but Odin was a cakewalk. I expected an impossible and rewarding fight, but it wasn't! Suggestion: if you press players to the limit and then you create a super final boss for those who had the patience to get there, make it the worst nightmare of their lives!!!!!!! ;)

Thanks a lot for this game!!! ;)

You completed all 30 missions!!! Wow, that is impressive.
Some of the bonus dungeons were intentionally made difficult.
To be honest when I played through the game I thought it was
easy (maybe I played too much Final Fantasy or Zelda - old school ones.)

With Odin it really depended on what skills he was using.
The exile skill can sometimes be really cheap, but at level
68 it might have been a cake walk. You can repeat this battle
as many times as you want. If he manages to exile all three
party members and kill Da-Zar it can be game over very quickly.

Thank you for enjoying the game. Progress on my next
game is going well, with about 30 minutes of gameplay
so far.
I've finished Chapter 4.
Anybody know how many times you have to talk to the old man's cat before he says something other than meowwwwww????
